Most history books will tell you that the Roman Empire fell in the fifth century CE, but this would’ve come as a surprise to the millions who lived in the Roman Empire through the Middle Ages. This Medieval Roman Empire, today called the Byzantine Empire, began when Constantine, the first Christian emperor, moved Rome's capital. Leonora Neville details the rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire.

Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire?
When the Roman Empire split between East and West in the 5th century, both halves continued to think of themselves, and refer to themselves, as Romans. But over time, historians in western Europe began to describe the Eastern Roman Empire as 'the Empire of the Greeks, and later 'the Byzantine Empire'. Why were they reluctant to call them what the Eastern Romans always called themselves - Romans??

History of Byzantine Empire - Every Month
The Byzantine Empire, also referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantium, was the continuation of the Roman Empire in its eastern provinces during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, when its capital city was Constantinople. It survived the fragmentation and fall of the Western Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire lasted from 476-1453. This Roman-Greek civilization defined much of the middle ages and fought nearly a thousand years of constant warfare.IN HOC SIGNO VINCES.

📜 Byzantine Empire: Justinian and Theodora - Part 1- Extra History
Justinian arose from humble roots, the nephew of an illiterate pig farmer named Justin. Justin joined the army and rose to become leader of the palace guard, then took his nephew under his wing and made sure that he was well educated. When Emperor Anastasius died, Justin used his position (and his standing army inside Constantinople) to claim the crown for himself. His nephew guided the early years of his reign, helping Justin secure support both in the capitol and abroad. When Justin died, rule of the Byzantine Empire passed to the young Justinian, who had grand ambitions to restore its waning glory. It also freed him to marry Theodora, a famous actress who was far beneath his social station, and who would also rise from...

The Byzantine Empire was founded during the chaotic third century. It was the time when revolts and civil wars were common, and Roman emperors merely lasted for a year.
Despite being one of the most captivating historical periods of all time, the Byzantine Empire is a lesser known one and it's rare to find a page-turning resource on the topic.

It also freed him to marry Theodora, a famous actress who was far beneath his social station, and who would also rise from her humble beginnings to become a revered empress.
