Under the peace accord that ended NATO's bombardment of Yugoslavia, all Serb forces must leave Kosovo by Sunday night.
Even as K-FOR peacemakers entered, Yugoslav forces were beating a final retreat - heading out of Podujevo.
Serb tanks and Armoured Personnel Carriers sped along the road leaving a trail of smoke in their wake.
Skirmishes between KLA and VJ (Yugoslav Army) troops were still being reported on the outskirts of Podujevo, 40 kilometres north of Pristina.
On the route into town, a house was in flames, apparently after being torched.
As the Serbs pulled out, Challenger tanks and Warrior infantry carriers from Britain's Fourth Armoured Brigade began moving in.
Their entry the result of an appeal by the Yugoslav authorities who feared that remaining Serb civilians could be subject to reprisals if a "vacuum" was allowed to develop as the Serb forces completed their withdrawal.
The troops were greeted with roses and flowers thrown by ecstatic ethnic Albanians who flooded into the streets to celebrate their liberation from the hated Serb authorities.
Chanting Nato! Nato!!, the crowds mingled with British troops.
Even the elderly weren't being left out of the celebrations.
The British soldiers face the difficult task of fostering a reconciliatory mood in this town, as they try to ensure that the area is made safe for returning refugees.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We don't mind having our forces intermingled with the Serb forces, but what we do not want is for there to be any security vacuum. To that end we are moved up and are going to deploy forces throughout the area, so that any attack by either community upon each other can be stopped by our forces".

NATO troops were on Tuesday continuing to deploy in southern Kosovo.
A convoy of about 30 vehicles and scores of British troops left Pristina mid-morning for the town of Podujevo, some 30 kilometres (20 miles) to the north.
Podujevo's pre-war population was about 20-thousand.
As the British troops move in, Serb forces continue to pullout.
Hundreds of Yugoslav army vehicles including tanks carrying soldiers and paramilitaries are leaving Kosovo on the road from Podujevo to comply with the midnight deadline for withdrawal set by NATO.
The British KFOR D-squadron Household Cavalry are stationed 12 kilometres south of Podujevo to observe the withdrawal of Serb forces.
The area near Podujevo, north of the capital Pristina, is still under the control of the Yugoslav army.
The Yugoslav army commander of the area has told the British not to proceed onward to Podujevo from the point where they are stationed at now.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"There is a vehicle check-point right there and they will not allow us to go any further. Period. The idea is that they are using this route to withdraw their armour and should we go any further it would get in the way of their withdrawal so we are staying here for the time being."
SUPER CAPTION: British Lt Alex Howard, KFOR
One of the first tasks of alliance troops will be to check out reports that, as in other parts, departing Serb forces had been burning houses and taking hostages among ethnic Albanian residents.
In the area near Podujevo, houses could clearly be seen burning.
They are believed to have been set alight by Serb troops prior to their departure.
Houses in the village of Donje Ljubce, just north of Pristina, were also reportedly on fire.
Serb soldiers carrying gas cans were apparently seen moving through the village as it burned.
Serb police and the Yugoslav army were expected to pull most of their forces from the Pristina on Tuesday, moving to other areas of Serbia under terms of the international peace agreement which calls for all police, paramilitaries and soldiers to be out of the province by Sunday night.

(17 Jun 1999) Natural Sound
As ethnic Albanian refugees stream back into Kosovo, many of the province's Serb residents continue to flee in fear.
Wagons full of Serb and gypsy families made their way to the border with Serbia on Thursday, fearful that the returning Kosovar Albanians or the Kosovo Liberation Army might seek for revenge.
In Podujevo, ethnic Albanian children cheered the arrival of British troops, who spent part of Thursday meeting the outgoing Serb military to discuss NATO's complete takeover of the town on Friday.
NATO has pledged to make Kosovo safe again for everyone living there - but many residents who are not ethnic Albanian aren't listening.
Carts full of Serb and gypsy Kosovars headed north towards the border with Serbia on Thursday, hoping to find safety among their fellow Serbs.
They fear that revenge may be the first thing on the minds of ethnic Albanians returning to their homes after the end of the conflict.
They left their homes amid allegations of ethnic cleansing and massacres by the Serbs, and now that they are coming back many Serb residents are choosing to leave before violence breaks out.
In the Kosovan town of Podujevo, 40 kilometres north of Pristina, British forces arriving as part of NATO's K-FOR peacekeeping mission were given a rapturous welcome.
Ethnic Albanian children filled the streets, chanting 'NATO, NATO' and making peace signs.
The soldiers face the difficult task of helping all residents rebuild their homes and return to a peaceful, normal way of life.
Like their counterparts from other countries stationed around Kosovo, these British forces are trying to ensure that the area is safe for the return of those who fled in terror.
NATO now estimates that Serb forces may have killed more than 10-thousand people during two months of war and ethnic violence in the province.
For these children, the arrival of NATO troops was a welcome sight after months of fear and uncertainty for their families and neighbours.
The last remnants of Serb forces were making their way out of the town on Thursday, just as the British forces took up their position on the streets.
In many areas of Podujevo, the streets bear witness to the relentless campaign of intimidation and terror waged by the Serb forces.
Driving through many of the town's streets is like passing through the aftermath of a tornado or natural disaster, with buildings burned, windows broken and no sign of life.
But this disaster was manmade, and it is now NATO's job to clean up the battle zone.
With the NATO troops set to take command of the town on Friday, British military leaders
held talks with their local police and Serb counterparts about their exit procedure.
Overall, the Serb withdrawal from Kosovo has gone ahead with few incidents.
A spokesman for the allied force said on Thursday that 26-thousand of the 40-thousand or so Serb troops in Kosovo had left.
Under the peace accord that ended the NATO campaign, all Serb forces are to be out of the province by Sunday night, with allied officials saying the pullout is going well.
As more armoured Serb vehicles are being loaded in preparation for their departure, NATO is hopeful that the next few days will see the Serbs' complete withdrawal without any last-minute clashes.

(19 Jun 1999) Albanian/Nat
As thousands of ethnic Albanians return to Kosovo, many are finding that their homes and possesions have been destroyed.
Enver Durqi is one such refugee who returned to Podujevo to find his home demolished.
Durqi's entirely family was reportedly shot and killed there by Serb police forces.
For 38 year old Enver Durq the return home was not a joyous occassion.
Enver's mother, father, wife, and four children are reported to have been murdered there by Serb forces.
His family are now buried in the field on the outskirts of Podujevo, along with eleven other Albanians killed in the area.
Durqi was accompanied by his brother Shemshi on his return home.
The brothers cried as they saw the bullets on the ground, clothing remnants, and the watch of Enver's wife in the garden.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"This place was surrounded by police. My parents told me to leave because the police were here. They believed that the police wouldn't kill elderly women or children. As soon as I left, they executed my family."
SUPERCAPTION: Enver Durqi, Ethnic Albanian
Enver and Shemshi then went to the gravesite with flowers to pray.
The men then made their way to Shemshi's home which was also in total ruin.

Two protesters injured in a violent weekend clash with police in Kosovo have died, United Nations (UN) police said on Sunday.
The two were among thousands of demonstrators marching on Saturday in protest over Kosovo's future status and a UN backed proposal that falls short of granting the province full independence from Serbia.
Riot police opened fire with rubber bullets and tear gas in the capital Pristina.
UN police commissioner Stephen Curtis said on Sunday it was regrettable that two lives had been lost as a result of the clashes.
He emphasised that police had been trying to restore law and order.
Police released the names of the deceased - 30-year-old Mal Balaj and 35-year-old Arben Xheladini.
Kadri Balaj, father of Man Balaj, said he was shocked to hear of the news of his son's death.
"I saw him last night in the hospital. After that KFOR took him away. I did not receive any news. Then I heard from the media, that my son is dead. I don't know what to say, I'm shocked," Kadri Balaj told Associated Press.
A further 70 protesters required medical assistance as a result of Saturday's protest. Eight were injured, including four seriously, police said.
Fifteen protesters were arrested and eight officers were hurt.
Kosovo has been run by the UN since mid-1999, when NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) launched an air war to halt the Serb crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists.
The conflict in Kosovo left some ten thousand people dead, most of them ethnic Albanians.
Ethnic Albanians continue to push for statehood, eight years after NATO drove Serb forces out.
The latest plan, which needs approval by the UN Security Council in order to come into force, has been endorsed by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leaders but rejected by Serbian officials in Belgrade who refuse to give up the province, considering it to be Serbia's historic heartland.
