Plain Spoken is the 20th studio album by Americansinger-songwriter and musician John Mellencamp. It was released on September 23, 2014 by Republic Records.Plain Spoken marks the first project of Mellencamp's new lifetime recording contract with Republic Records. The album's cover photo was taken by actress Meg Ryan, Mellencamp's on-again-off-again girlfriend.
Recording and production
Mellencamp began recording the album in January 2014 at his Belmont Mall Studio in Belmont, Indiana. In late 2013, Mellencamp told Rolling Stone magazine: "I've got a notebook with 85 new songs that I've written for my next record. T Bone Burnett is going to come out to Indiana sometime in early January and we're gonna go into the studio for however long it takes to make a new album. I haven't done one in five years." As Mellencamp mentioned, T Bone Burnett, who had produced Mellencamp's previous two studio albums and the soundtrack to his musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, was originally going to serve as the producer of Plain Spoken, but Burnett is credited only as "executive producer" in the album's liner notes and there is nobody credited as the album's "producer."
Spoken is the sixth studio album released by the Christianhard rock band Spoken. The album was released on September 25, 2007. Radio singles released from this album include "When Hope Is All You Have" and "Trading in This Troubled Heart".
Critical reception
Awarding the album three and a half stars for CCM Magazine, Andy Argyrakis states, "[Spoken] continue[s] its fiery, hard-rock groundwork, while exploding with additional diversity and heavy-handed experimentation." Russ Breimeier, giving the album four stars at Christianity Today, writes, "The versatility in sound and style ultimately makes this album the best yet from Spoken—even if the first song isn't their strongest." Rating the album an eight out of ten from Cross Rhythms, Jeremy Williams describes, "a heavy album that knows when to pause for breath." Lindsay Wiseman, indicating in a four star review by Jesus Freak Hideout, says, "this album delivers in all aspects." Signaling in a review at The Phantom Tollbooth, Ryan Ro criticizes, "Spoken is yet another unnecessary addition to the Tooth & Nail catalogue, a faceless band in a sea of faceless bands, a clone of a clone of a clone. Pass on this one."
Starting in 1996, Spoken quickly became a mainstay in their local music scene due to a relentless work ethic and performance schedule. Shortly after forming, Spoken was signed to their first record deal with Metro 1 Music, on which they released three albums and a greatest hits compilation. With the release of their first album, On Your Feet (1997), and continuing through their second record, …What Remains (1999), the Spoken sound was a combination of rap meets metal and a bit of melodic rock. The third full-length release, Echoes of the Spirit Still Dwell (2000) contained a heavier, more melodic approach to song writing, with songs like "Forevermore" and "This Path" generating repeated rotations on various modern rock radio and video programs across the country.
Spoken signed to Tooth & Nail Records to release their next album, titled A Moment of Imperfect Clarity. This, and their subsequent albums on Tooth and Nail, highlighted an evolving sound in which first melody and then a post-hardcore sound were introduced and stressed. The band shot music videos for "Promise" and "Falling Further"
