Pitt Island has 65 square kilometres (25sqmi). It lies about 770 kilometres (480mi) to the east of New Zealand's main islands, and about 20 kilometres (12mi) to the southeast of Chatham Island, from which it is separated by Pitt Strait. The island is very hilly; its highest point (Waihere Head) rises to 231 metres (758ft) above sea level. As of 2011, Pitt Island had a population of about 38 people.
Pitt Island's Kahuitara Point is the first populated location on earth to observe a sunrise in each new year, based on local time zone.
History
Pitt Island was originally inhabited by the Moriori, the indigenous peoples of the Chatham Islands, who called it Rangiaotea or Rangihaute. Their archaeological remains are found almost everywhere on the island; large quantities of artifacts are constantly coming to light. No remains of momori rakau are visible on the island, but there are records of them once being present
The island has an area of 1,368km² (528 sq mi), is 90km (56mi) long, and ranges from 8 to 23km (5 to 14mi) wide. Its highest point is at 962 m (3,155ft).

Beauty kayak paddle down the west shoreline of Pitt Lake to Goose Island. One perfect little spot to camp. This was my first solo camp. Saw lots of wildlife including a beaver while taking my boat out at the end of the trip.

These videos are of a coastal aerial video imaging (AVI) survey conducted in northern British Columbia during 1999 from Runge Island Entrance Patterson Inlet Pitt Island To North Side Stephens Narrows Port Stephens. The survey was conducted in support of coastal and land-use management initiatives of the Land-Use Coordination Office (LUCO). The entire survey was conducted during extreme low-tides with tidal elevation seldom exceeding 1m above chart datum during the survey. The surveys may have used both helicopter) and/or fixed-wing aircraft. The shoreline is imaged with the aircraft (a) to the seaward of the shoreline, (b) at elevations of 75-100m and (c) at an air speed of 100 km/hr.
The support will be invaluable in terms of road environment surveillance and traffic monitoring, safeguarding the movement of people around the island, and if necessary, responding to complaints where appropriate, Pitt said.
