Pioneer Courthouse Square, also known as Portland's living room, is a public space occupying a full 40,000-square-foot (3,700m2)city block in the center of downtownPortland, Oregon, United States. Opened in 1984, the square is bounded by Southwest Morrison Street on the north, Southwest 6th Avenue on the east, Southwest Yamhill Street on the south, and Southwest Broadway on the west.
History
The square is named after the Pioneer Courthouse, an 1875 federal building occupying the block directly east of the square.
The block itself dates to 1856, when the city purchased land that included the site as the location for Central School. The school was moved in 1883 when plans were made for a major hotel on the site in response to the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway. After delays due to a recession, the eight-story Portland Hotel was completed on the site in 1890.
The hotel was the center of the city's social activity for the first half of the 20th century. In 1951, the hotel was torn down and a two-story parking lot was built. An original archway and gatework from the hotel were made part of the square's design and are found today on the south side of the square.
Prior to the Back to the Future series, the area was known as Mockingbird Square due to its role in the film To Kill a Mockingbird. It has been severely damaged by fire several times, including in 1957, 1990 and 2008. It was reconstructed after each incident.
Fires
A three-alarm fire broke out at the Universal back lot in the early morning hours on June 1, 2008. It was reported that Courthouse Square was completely destroyed, though the Courthouse facade and town facade to the north are still standing. The King Kong attraction and New York Street were destroyed. The set had previously been damaged by fire in 1990.
Productions
Following is a list of productions that used the Courthouse Square set:
Courthouse Square Park is a town square occupying one city block in downtown Dayton, Oregon. The 1.8 acres (0.73ha)urban park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park contains the historically significant blockhouse or military fortification that was originally located at Fort Yamhill. In 1911, the structure was moved to Dayton from its original site. The land for the park was donated by Joel Palmer and the park was named 'Courthouse Square' as part of an attempt to make Dayton the government seat of Yamhill County. Although Dayton did not become the county seat and no courthouse was ever constructed, the park's name remained. The Park also contains a picnic shelter, grassy areas shaded by Douglas Firs and native oaks, a basketball court, a playground and public restrooms.
Built in stages between 1869 and 1903, it was first occupied in 1875 by judge Matthew Deady. At that time the building was named the United States Building. Pioneer Courthouse has survived several attempts to demolish it, while continuing to function as a federal facility. On March 20, 1973, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

Pioneer Courthouse Square in Downtown Portland Oregon (March 31, 2023)
Pioneer Courthouse Square is the heart of downtown Portland, a one block square covered with bricks, and a place for events since 1984. It is also the center of Portland's transit, with all of the Tri-Met Max lines passing by the square.
This is just a quick view of the square, and the area around it, so I don't really get into its history, and every feature of the square. There is a lot more to see. There is especially more to see later in spring and in summer, when there are more events in the square.
Also, errata: I refer to the sculpture of the umbrella man as "Excuse Me", its correct name is "Allow Me". I say "a block south" in reference to the Orange Line, when it is a block East. And Pioneer Courthouse Square opened in 1984.
