Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States of America. He was born on February 12, 1809, in Hodgenville, Kentucky, and he grew up in a poor family on the American frontier. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American presidents, and his leadership during the Civil War and his efforts to preserve the Union and end slavery have made him a beloved figure in American history.
Lincoln's Early Life and Education
Lincoln was the second child of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. His father was a farmer and carpenter, and his mother died when he was just nine years old. Lincoln received little formal education, but he was an avid reader and taught himself to read and write. He also showed an early talent for public speaking and became a well-known orator in his community.
In 1816, Lincoln's family moved to Indiana, where they lived on a farm. When Lincoln was 21 years old, he left home and moved to New Salem, Illinois, where he worked as a storekeeper and postmaster. It was during this time that he first became interested in politics and began to develop his political skills.
Lincoln's Early Political Career
In 1834, Lincoln was elected to the Illinois state legislature as a member of the Whig Party. He served four terms in the legislature and became known for his advocacy of infrastructure projects, such as the construction of roads and canals. In 1846, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served a single term before returning to Illinois.
Lincoln's opposition to the expansion of slavery was a key issue in his political career. In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed, which allowed new territories to decide whether to allow slavery or not. Lincoln opposed the act and spoke out against it, which helped to establish him as a leading opponent of slavery.
The Election of 1860 and the Civil War
In 1860, Lincoln was nominated as the Republican candidate for
president. He ran against three other candidates, including the Democratic candidate, Stephen Douglas. The election was highly divisive, and Lincoln won with less than 40% of the popular vote. His victory led to the secession of several southern states, which formed the Confederate States of America.
The Civil War began in 1861, and Lincoln was faced with the task of preserving the Union and defeating the Confederacy. He faced significant challenges, including a divided government and a war that lasted four years and claimed the lives of more than 600,000 Americans.
Lincoln's Leadership During the Civil War
Lincoln was known for his strong leadership during the Civil War. He was deeply committed to the idea of preserving the Union, and he worked tirelessly to ensure that the North was able to win the war. He made several key decisions during the war that helped to turn the tide in favor of the Union.
One of Lincoln's most important decisions was to issue the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which declared that all slaves in Confederate-held territories were to be set free. While the proclamation did not immediately free all slaves, it was an important step towards the end of slavery in the United States.
Lincoln was also known for his ability to rally the American people and inspire them to support the war effort. His speeches, including the Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address, are considered some of the most important in American history.
Assassination and Legacy
Lincoln was reelected in 1864 and began planning for the reconstruction of the South after the war. However, on April 14, 1865, he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D

Disambiguating Explicit and Implicit Geographic References in Natural Language: When people speak, both they and their utterances are situated in place and time. Our utterances reflect where we are from, where we are right now, and where we are talking about—among many other things, including personality, social status, and the topics under discussion. As hearers, we naturally incorporate locational awareness into our understanding of what we are told. That is to say, we geographically ground the meaning of natural language utterances. In this talk, I will discuss both toponym resolution (e.g., identifying which Springfield is intended in a passage) and general text geolocation—deriving geographical gists from free-running text that perhaps has no explicit mentions of places. I’ll cover supervised and semi-supervised methods for solving these tasks. I’ll also briefly discuss how this work might generalize the now commonplace treatment of words-as-vectors into computational models of word meaning that use multi-dimensional representations over words, geography, time, and images.
