The station was opened on 10 March 1906 by the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway (now the Bakerloo line) with the platforms of the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (now the Piccadilly line) being opened on 15 December 1906. As originally built it had, like other stations, a surface booking hall (designed, like many in central London built at that time, by Leslie Green). The development of traffic before and after World War I meant that the need for improved station facilities was acute – in 1907 1.5million passengers used the station, by 1922 it had grown to 18million passengers. It was decided to construct a sub-surface booking hall and circulating area, which would also provide public pedestrian subways. Work began in February 1925 and was completed in 1928. The architect was Charles Holden and the builder was John Mowlem & Co: the whole complex cost more than half-a-million pounds. Eleven escalators were provided in two flights, leading to the two lines serving the station. Above these escalators was once a mural by artist Stephen Bone, showing the world with London at its centre. This mural was later replaced by advertising.
A metro station or subway station is a railway station for a rapid transit system, often known by names such as "metro", "underground" and "subway". Such a station can be elevated, underground, or about ground level depending on the level of the train tracks. At crossings of metro lines, they are multi-level. There are entrances/exits at ground/street level, often with stairs or sometimes ramps or escalators leading to any elevated or lowered track level area.
At street level the logo of the metro company marks the entrance of the station, along with the schematics of the services at the station. Some metro operators also post the station name at the station entrance. Often there are several entrances for one station, saving one from having to cross the street. In such a case, tunnels or overhead stations can often also be used just to cross the street.
In some cases metro stations are connected to important buildings by a direct enclosed hallway (see underground city).
Piccadilly now links directly to the theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue, as well as the Haymarket, Coventry Street (onwards to Leicester Square), and Glasshouse Street. The Circus is close to major shopping and entertainment areas in the West End. Its status as a major traffic junction has made Piccadilly Circus a busy meeting place and a tourist attraction in its own right. The Circus is particularly known for its video display and neon signs mounted on the corner building on the northern side, as well as the Shaftesbury memorial fountain and statue of Eros. It is surrounded by several notable buildings, including the London Pavilion and Criterion Theatre. Directly underneath the plaza is Piccadilly Circus tube station, part of the London Underground system.
Pernilla Wahlgren entered stage with the brothers Vito and Emilio Ingrosso as dancers. Wahlgren was later blamed for wearng an Iron Cross-like item on stage, which was referred to as nazi progapanda.
A Framåt fredag parody version was called "Inga djur på cirkus", describing Miljöpartiet in 2005 asking for stop using animals at circus shows in Sweden.
Piccadilly (/ˌpɪkəˈdɪli/) is a road in the City of Westminster, London to the south of Mayfair, between Hyde Park Corner in the west and Piccadilly Circus in the east. It is part of the A4 road that connects central London to Hammersmith, Earl's Court, Heathrow Airport and the M4 motorway westward. St James's is to the south of the eastern section, while the western section is built up only on the northern side. At just under 1 mile (1.6km) in length, Piccadilly is one of the widest and straightest streets in central London.
Piccadilly has been a main road since at least medieval times, and in the middle ages was known as "the road to Reading" or "the way from Colnbrook". Around 1611 or 1612, a Robert Baker acquired land in the area and prospered by making and selling piccadills. Shortly after purchasing the land, he enclosed it and erected several dwellings, including his home, Pikadilly Hall. What is now Piccadilly was named Portugal Street in 1663 after Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II, and grew in importance after the road from Charing Cross to Hyde Park Corner was closed to allow the creation of Green Park in 1668. Some of the most notable stately homes in London were built on the northern side of the street during this period, including Clarendon House and Burlington House in 1664. Berkeley House, constructed around the same time as Clarendon House, was destroyed by a fire in 1733 and rebuilt as Devonshire House in 1737 by William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire. It was later used as the main headquarters for the Whig party. Burlington House has since been home to several noted societies, including the Royal Academy of Arts, the Geological Society of London and the Royal Astronomical Society. Several members of the Rothschild family had mansions at the western end of the street. St James's Church was consecrated in 1684 and the surrounding area became St James Parish.
Piccadilly (Пикадили) is a Bulgarian supermarket chain based in Varna. Founded as a 51% foreign-owned company in 1995, it opened its first supermarket in Varna in 1994 and became 100% Bulgarian-owned in 2003. Piccadilly is known for its near-complete dominance of the market in Varna to the extent that it prevents large international chains such as Billa from opening new stores.
As of 2006, the company operates five supermarkets in Varna and two in Sofia (one in City Center Sofia and one in Mall of Sofia). Also there is one supermarket in Veliko Tarnovo and one in Burgas.A loyalty program, Piccadilly Club, was started in 2003.
Serbian firm "Delta Holding" bought 85% of the Piccadilly Chain Supermarket Firm in 2007. On Sep 12, 2007, two companies have signed the deal in Sofia. Delta will invest about 70 million Euros in Piccadilly and open 20 new stores which will hire about 1000 new employees. Purchasing Piccadilly is the first time that the Serbian capital is investing in an EU member state.

The hidden history of Piccadilly Circus Station - BBC London
The old Piccadilly Circus outgrew itself and rebuilt a new station due to an overload of commuters.
But its remains were used to shelter the lives of those in the Second World War.
Around 1940 the station was used by nearly 2,000 people as shelter during The Blitz.
Now Piccadilly Circus Station's history is being celebrated with a tour around the tunnels and an exhibition at the London Museum.

Piccadilly Circus in the dead of night Just passing time beneath the lights Up in town and all alone Got no business so minds his own The hotel room is lonely and cold He might as well go for a stroll Idly looking in a hi-fi shop Footsteps, a chuckle, and one hard slap And they didn't even see his face See him flinch or hear him groan They didn't even see his eyes One mean blow and on they ran He put his fingers to his side And felt his flesh was open wide He felt the rent the blow had made For the hand that fell had held a blade And they didn't even see his face See him stumble, hear his cry They didn't even see his eyes Just lashed out in passing by What can it mean? Who can make some sense of that? Did it mean a thing to them? What can make a mind like that? Those forty stitches helped him over Who can live life over his shoulder? He tried to put it in his past And flew safe home back to Belfast And they didn't even see his face See him stagger, watch him fall They didn't even see his eyes They never knew him at all Never knew him Tried to kill him Never knew him
