"Pictures That Talk" (Photoplay, July 1924)
Here we learn about the fascinating work of Dr. Lee DeForest, who made synchronized sound film possible. Although Hollywood initially rejected his invention and tried other, lower quality methods, it eventually became the standard.

EUBIE BLAKE: DeForest Phonofilm, 1923.
CORRECTED RESTORATION originally by courtesy of the Library of Congress: PIONEERING AFRO-AMERICAN COMPOSER/PERFORMER James Herbert "Eubie" Blake (1887 - 1983) with his long-term collaborator Noble Sissle, wrote and performed in SHUFFLE ALONG (1921). This was one of the first Broadway musicals to be written and performed by Afro-Americans. Eubie was one of eight children born to former slaves, and the only one of his siblings to survive infancy. By the early 1920s he was famous worldwide for his compositions "I'm Just Wild About Harry", "The Charleston Rag" and "Love Will Find A Way". In 1923 he performed in several of the very earliest experimental sound films made by Dr Lee DeForest in New York, of which this example is one. SISSLE AND BLAKE: DeForest Phonofilm (2) 1923.
SISSLE AND BLAKE, "SNAPPY SONGS NUMBER 2" filmed by De Forest Phonofilms with an optical soundtrack as an experiment in 1923, and the print held in the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. This reel is suffering from advanced image bleaching, due either to nitrate base deterioration or inadequate print washing after fixing. Most posts avoid presenting this clip, as the sound track is so bad. I've cleaned it up as best I can under the circumstances, but it's still pretty bad. As a record of the first notable Afro-American performers on a sound film, shot in the wake of their Broadway triumph with "SHUFFLE ALONG" (1921), it's still a very valuable record. Note that in the barely audible introduction, Sissle opens with the statement "well here we is, in the movies!" To which Eubie Blake replies "these are no...

SISSLE AND BLAKE: DeForest Phonofilm (1) 1923.
NOBLE SISSLE AND EUBIE BLAKE in 1923, fresh from the success of their first Afro-American Broadway musical "SHUFFLE ALONG" (1921) singing two songs for experimental talkie DeForest Phonofilms. These have been preserved in the Library of Congress, but have previously been uploaded to Internet with a host of faults, hopefully corrected with my current filtering. I've removed hum, sprocket noise, some hiss, distortion and a lot of bumps in the frequency response. The frequency analysis 'waterfall" graph of the soundtrack was used to precisely locate, analyse and eliminate these deficiencies. I'll be posting another song short filmed by Sissle and Blake on Phonofilms in 1923, unfortunately surviving in poorer condition, over the next couple of days. This "Fantasy On Stephen Foster's Swanee River" has been previously reproduced on Internet with bad sound, at the wrong speed, with incorrect picture ratio and with the wrong contrast ratio. Extracting the hum, sprocket buzz, clicks, hiss, distortion and resonances, the remaining audio track really is very good for that distant period. Phonofilms of that time were shot around 19 pics/second, so they are shown way too fast at the modern projection speed. Having a little coronavirus shut-in time up my sleeve, I decided today to sit down with my video and audio editors to rectify all of these imperfections to the best of my ability. This posting was originally uploaded on the Library of Congress site, to whom all queries should be addressed, with many of its audio deficiencies now corrected. And it's very impressive improv piano work by Eubie Blake, too.

Note that in the barely audible introduction, Sissle opens with the statement "well here we is, in the movies!" To which Eubie Blake replies "these are no movies, these are the TALKIES!" To my knowledge, this is the first recorded instance on which that word, 'talkies', was used - so Eubie might be credited as the inventor of the word.

The soundtrack problems in films of this extreme age, as you might imagine, are quite severe.
