The Phoenician alphabet, called by convention the Proto-Canaanite alphabet for inscriptions older than around 1050 BC, is the oldest verified alphabet. The Phoenician alphabet contains 22 letters, all of which are consonants, and is described as an abjad, withmatres lectionis being used for some vowels in certain late varieties. It was used for the writing of Phoenician, a Northern Semitic language, used by the civilization of Phoenicia.
The Phoenician alphabet is derived from Egyptian hieroglyphs and became one of the most widely used writing systems, spread by Phoenician merchants across the Mediterranean world, where it evolved and was assimilated by many other cultures. The Paleo-Hebrew alphabet was directly derived from Phoenician. Another derivative script is the Aramaic alphabet, which was the ancestor of the modern Arabic script. The Modern Hebrew script is a stylistic variant of the Aramaic script. The Greek alphabet (and by extension its descendants such as the Latin, the Cyrillic, and the Coptic) was also derived from Phoenician.

Last year, New York City’s Jewish Museum imported a new director from the Israel Museum... 5 ... In fact, it’s so old that the Aramaic used in the stele was still being written in the Phoenician alphabet — a language that predates Aramaic ... 7, 2023 ... -- ... ....
The Phoenician alphabet was developed at Byblos, and this is where almost all of the known early Phoenician inscriptions were found, most of them dating from the 10th century BC... The 22 letters of the Phoenician alphabet.
The Phoenician alphabet, consisting primarily of consonantal characters, served as the precursor to numerous writing systems, including Greek, Latin, and ultimately the modern Western alphabet.
Cadmus was famous for teaching the Phoenician alphabet and building on the Acropolis of Thebes, which was named the Cadmeia in his honor; it became an intellectual, spiritual, and cultural center of the region.
Cadmus was a Phoenician prince who traveled to Greece and introduced the alphabet to that land. The fact that the Greek alphabet ultimately derives from the Phoenician alphabet is confirmed by archaeology and scholarship.
