The soundtrack album topped the Billboard 200 album chart and sold more than 1,5 million copies while on chart, gaining a Platinum disc from the Recording Industry Association of America. Critics from the MovieTunes website called the release "more than simply an aural souvenir of a magical movie experience. It is the cutting edge of a collaborative art-form whose time has come". In his review for the music website AllMusic, journalist and critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine notes:
In movie industry terminology usage, a sound track is an audio recording created or used in film production or post-production. Initially the dialogue, sound effects, and music in a film each has its own separate track (dialogue track, sound effects track, and music track), and these are mixed together to make what is called the composite track, which is heard in the film. A dubbing track is often later created when films are dubbed into another language. This is also known as a M & E track (music and effects) containing all sound elements minus dialogue which is then supplied by the foreign distributor in the native language of its territory.
The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 4 stars and states "Soundtrack, stomps with all the fury of a live gospel choir trying to claim Saturday night for God instead of the other guy... The band is in a heavy Latin mood, where the blues, samba, bossa, hard bop, modal, and even soul are drenched in the blues. With only four tunes presented, the Charles Lloyd Quartet, while a tad more dissonant than it had been in 1966 and 1967, swings much harder, rougher, and get-to-the-groove quicker than any band Lloyd had previously led... This band would split soon after, when Jarrett left to play with Miles Davis, but if this was a live swansong, they couldn't have picked a better gig to issue".
Soundtrack is the seventh studio album of English rock band Modern English. The first to be released on Darla Records, Soundtrack marks a new territory for the band, as they continue on making music nearly 30 years after their debut album. The album was produced by Hugh Jones.
"Phenomenon" was the first single by LL Cool J from his seventh album Phenomenon. It was released on October 14, 1997. It samples the song "Who Is He And What Is He To You" by Creative Source. On the B-Side was "Hot Hot Hot". It interpolates bits of Liquid Liquid's song "Cavern". The lyrics "Something Like a Phenomenon" and the beat are taken from the song "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash.
George Malley (John Travolta) is a kind but slow witted auto mechanic who lives in a small friendly town in northern California. While celebrating his 37th birthday at a local bar with his best friend Nate Pope (Forest Whitaker) and father figure Doc Brunder (Robert Duvall), he steps outside. After saying goodbye to one of his employees, he notices what appears to be a ball of shining bright white lights moving around in the sky. The ball then grows closer and hits him in the head, making a loud sound and knocking him down. When he comes to and recovers and re-enters the bar, he learns that nobody else saw the lights or heard the loud sound. His friends playfully suggest that he has had too much to drink and only Doc notices something is amiss when George quickly achieves a checkmate in their chess game.
PHENOMENON (1996) - Thomas Newman - Soundtrack Score Suite
Okay, let's first say this: Phenomenon is a delightful score by Newman, one of his very best. If you like the lush string sound from Little Women, Up Close and Personal or How to Make an American Quilt, you're sure to like this one. The main theme is a gorgeous pastoral melody for strings and clarinets that segues into some pretty energetic accoustic and eletric guitar playing (similar to certain tracks of The Horse Whisperer, let's call it Newman's countryside style). The rest of the score is equally elegant, with the great Oscar and Lucinda-like track Shout in the Sky, the rhythmic Orchard-track with its dynamic percussion and the many soothing tracks with soft piano and string melodies. It works marvelous in the movie and offers a delightful listening experience on its own. Of course, t...

Aaron Neville - Crazy Love
Lyrics:
I can hear her heartbeat from a thousand miles
And the heavens open up every time she smiles
And when I come to her that is where I belong
And I'm running through her like a rivers song
She gives me love, love, love, love, crazy love
She gives me love, love, love, love, crazy love
She's got a fine sense of humor when I'm feeling low down
And I'm coming to her when the sun goes down
Take away my troubles, take away my grief
Take away my heartaches in the night like a thief
She gives me love, love, love, love, crazy love
She gives me love, love, love, love, crazy love
And I need her in the daytime ( I need her)
And I need her in the night ( I need her)
And I want to throw my arms around her
Kiss and hug her, kiss and hug her tight
When I'm returning from ...

Eric Clapton - Change The World
Come On Sing Along!
If I could reach the stars I'd pull one down for you
Shine it on my heart so you could see the truth
That this love I have inside is everything it seems
But for now I find it's only in my dreams
CHORUS:
That I can change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe
You will think my love was really something good
Baby if I could change the world
If I could be king even for a day
I'd take you as my queen I'd have it no other way
And our love will rule in this kingdom we have made
Till then I'd be a fool wishin' for the day
CHORUS:
That I can change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe

The only available source is a 23-minute promotional cassette compiled by Mr Newman that was sent out to the Academy's Music Branch voting members. At some point Varèse Sarabande had plans to release the score (most likely coupled with another Newman-project, like they did with American Buffalo and Threesome) but those plans never materialized. The promo cassette was the source for a bootleg-CD-R, which can be found on the collector's market. For now, this is the only way to obtain a copy of Newman's score, and that's too bad because Phenomenon is undoubtably one of his very best and most popular scores.
