Born in 1934 in San Francisco, Peter Saul’s first New York show was at Allan Frumkin Gallery in 1962. His most recent show was Mary Boone Gallery in 2015. Other exhibitions include shows in Paris, London, Chicago, Berlin, Moscow and Los Angeles, as well as many other cities. His work is in the collections of numerous museums including the Whitney, Pompidou, and MoMA. In spite of a great deal of moving around over the years, he has done very little except paint pictures.

Peter Saul is considered by many to be one of the most singular artists of his generation, whose paintings have continued to challenge audiences over the course of a career spanning more than six decades.
If any single theme defines Saul’s work as a whole, it is his willingness or more accurately, his eagerness to shock audiences. The gleeful irreverence in his treatment of ‘serious’ subject matter is the mark of an artist well aware of the power of humor. Through the 1970s and beyond, Saul continued to turn a critical eye on institutions such as the art world, government, big business, the feminist movement and public figures ranging from presidents to serial killers. In 1975, he left California for upstate New York. The move coincided with the development of a major new series of paintings on a grand scale, revisiting classics of art history including Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, Picasso’s Guernica and Leutze’s George Washington Crossing the Delaware. True to the genre, Saul’s version of ‘history’ painting is both parody of the past and commentary on present. In 1981, Saul was offered a teaching position at the University of Texas, Austin, where he lived and worked until returning to New York in 2001. While he continued to engage with the various subjects of his earlier work, beginning in the late 1980s a number of self-portraits signaled a more introspective approach in his painting. Though hardly a departure from his established style - described by one critic as “Thomas Hart Benton meets R Crumb” - Saul himself often appears as the comic-tragic subject of his more recent paintings.
Jason Rosenfeld, PhD is Distinguished Chair and Professor of Art History at Marymount Manhattan College. He was co-curator of the exhibitions John Everett Millais (Tate Britain, Van Gogh Museum), Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde (Tate Britain and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), and River Crossings (Olana and Cedar Grove, Hudson and Catskill, New York). He has contributed the lead text for a Phaidon monograph on Cecily Brown that will be published in November 2020. He is a Senior Writer and Editor-at-Large for the Brooklyn Rail.
Amanda Gluibizzi is an ArtSeen editor at The Brooklyn Rail. An art historian, she is the co-director of The New Foundation for Art History and the author of Art and Design in 1960s New York (forthcoming).
Louis Bury is the author of “Exercises in Criticism,” which uses rules and procedures to write poetic criticism about literary constraint. He is Assistant Professor of English at Hostos Community College, CUNY, and writes regularly about visual art for Hyperallergic and BOMB.

The letters in this volume, first to Saul’s parents and then to his dealer, Allan Frumkin, are intimate and wide-ranging, full of the same kind of observations that make Saul’s work so compelling.
Throughout this period Saul was concerned not only with making his work but also making his life as an artist. The book is therefore very much the story of an artist finding his voice and then attempting to understand and participate in “the art world,” as Saul worked first through pop, then “funk,” and then essentially created his own category. Taken together, the letters in this book form not just an autobiography of the artist, but a memoir of American art history at a critical moment.
