Moffat wrote the historical drama The Village, depicting life in a Derbyshire village through the eyes of a central character, Bert Middleton. The first series, covering the years 1914 to 1920 in six episodes, premiered on BBC1 in 2013, and a second series, set in the 1920s, was made in 2014. Moffat envisions more series totaling up to 42 episodes that will continue the story through the 20th century. The proposed project is similar to the German film series Heimat, written and directed by Edgar Reitz, which told the story of a German family from 1919 to 2000.
The Moffat House Hotel, located at the northern end of the High Street, was designed by John Adam. The nearby Star Hotel, a mere 20ft (6m) wide, boasted a record in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat won the Britain in Bloom contest in 1996.
The town is held to be the ancestral seat of Clan Moffat. The Devil's Beef Tub near Moffat was used by the members of Clan Moffat and later the members of Clan Johnstone to hoard cattle stolen in predatory raids.
Early tourism as a spa town
From 1633 Moffat began to grow from a small village into a popular spa town. The sulphurous and saline waters of Moffat Spa were believed to have healing properties, specifically curative for skin conditions, gout, rheumatism and stomach complaints. In 1730 these were complemented by the addition of iron springs. During the Victorian era the high demand led to the water being piped down from the well to a tank in Tank Wood and then on to a specially built bath house in the town centre (now the Town Hall).

Your Honor screenwriter Peter Moffat on showrunning & the differences in UK & US screenwriting
(This episode was originally released as a podcast on 5 March 2021)
Peter Moffat is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter who has written shows such as Silk, Criminal Justice (which was adapted into The Night Of for HBO) and most recently, Your Honor, which stars Bryan Cranston.
We had great fun chatting with Peter, learning about how his previous career as a criminal barrister has helped with his writing, and hear how he moved into TV work after writing plays. He tells us all about what it's like to be a showrunner on a US TV show, and how that differs from writing for UK TV, and why you can never do enough research for your stories.

Veteran Andy Holder fulfilled his promise to friend Peter Moffat, bringing his ashes to Gibraltar
It’s never too late to fulfill a promise to a friend.
Former Royal Engineer Andy Holder currently resides in Burnley but he considers Gibraltar to be his second home. A few years ago he met Peter Moffat, who had served on the Rock during World War Two. They became good friends and Andy promised Peter he would travel with him back to Gibraltar for what would have been Peter’s first visit here since 1947.
Sadly, Peter passed away before travel was possible, so Andy arranged for his ashes to be scattered here. One year on, he shared his story with GBC reporter Jonathan Scott.
