A petechia, plural petechiae, is a small (1–2 mm) red or purple spot on the skin, caused by a minor bleed (from broken capillaryblood vessels).
Petechia refers to one of the three descriptive types of bleeding into the skin differentiated by size, the other two being purpura and ecchymosis. Petechiae are by definition less than 3mm.
The term is almost always used in the plural, since a single lesion is seldom noticed or significant.
Causes
The most common cause of petechiae is through physical trauma such as a hard bout of coughing, holding breath, vomiting or crying, which can result in facial petechiae, especially around the eyes. Petechiae in this instance are harmless and usually disappear within a few days. Petechiae may be a sign of thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts) when platelet function is inhibited (e.g., as a side effect of medications or during certain infections), or in clotting factor deficiencies. They may also occur when excessive pressure is applied to tissue (e.g., when a tourniquet is applied to an extremity or with excessive coughing or vomiting).

Petechial Rash - Approach
The petechial rash is a non-blanching rash due to the extravasation of RBCs.
It can result from problems with hemostasis or vessel wall.
Remember that vasculopathy can either be inflammatory (vasculitis) or noninflammatory.
We hope this helps you reason through the patient with a petechial rash.

Leukaemia: what is it, how to spot the warning signs and who is at risk?
Each year the Telegraph launches its Christmas Charity Appeal where we ask you, our readership and viewers, to help us support three charities with the incredible work they carry out all year round.
This years chosen charities are The Silver Line, Wooden Spoon and Leukaemia Care.
Leukaemia is an umbrella term for a type of blood cancer that has multiple sub-types. While it is often associated with children, the cancer is most likely to affect those over the age of 65; only seven per cent of cases are diagnosed in children aged 14 and under.
