Pete Johnson (March 25, 1904 – March 23, 1967) was an American boogie-woogie and jazz pianist.
Journalist Tony Russell stated in his book The Blues – From Robert Johnson to Robert Cray, that "Johnson shared with the other members of the 'Boogie Woogie Trio' the technical virtuosity and melodic fertility that can make this the most exciting of all piano music styles, but he was more comfortable than Meade Lux Lewis in a band setting; and as an accompanist, unlike Lewis or Albert Ammons, he could sparkle but not outshine his singing partner". Fellow journalist Scott Yanow (Allmusic) added "Johnson was one of the three great boogie-woogie pianists (along with Lewis and Ammons) whose sudden prominence in the late 1930s helped make the style very popular".
Biography
Johnson was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He was raised by his mother after his father deserted the family. Things got so bad financially, Pete was placed in an orphanage when he was three. He became so homesick, however, that he ran away and returned living at home. By the age of 12, he sought out work to ease some of the financial burden at home. He worked various jobs; in a factory, a print shop, and as a shoe-shiner. He dropped out of school in the fifth grade as a result of his efforts.
Born in Alexandria, Louisiana, Johnson graduated from Murrah High School in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned a B.A. from the University of Mississippi in 1971 and a law degree from Jackson School of Law in 1974. He joined the Bank of Clarksdale as a Senior Vice President and also served as President of the Young Bankers Section of the Mississippi Bankers Association. He then moved into the financial planning field and formed his own firm. In 1984, Governor William Allain appointed him Chair of the Mississippi Marketing Council. He was also President of the Clarksdale-Coahoma County Chamber of Commerce and Director of the Delta Council's Community and Industrial Development Board.
Johnson twice ran to represent Mississippi's 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982 and 1986, in both instances losing in the Democratic primaries to Robert G. Clark, Jr. and Mike Espy, respectively. In 1987, he was elected State Auditor, succeeding Ray Mabus, who was elected Governor the same election. In early 1989, Johnson announced he was joining the Republican Party, becoming the first Republican to hold statewide office in Mississippi since the Reconstruction Era. He entered the gubernatorial race in 1991 and, although considered the favorite for the Republican nomination, he came in at a close second in the primary to Vicksburg construction executive Kirk Fordice and went on to lose the runoff by more than 20 points. Fordice went on to defeat Mabus in the general election and became the first Republican Governor of Mississippi in 116 years.
Pete Johnson (born 29 April 1965) is a British children's writer with more than 50 books to his name. One of his latest, The Bad Spy's Guide, was shortlisted for a 2007 Blue Peter Book Award.
Pete Johnson visited Fowlmere School on March 20, 2009 where he opened their library with the school's councilors.
Pete Johnson played fullback for Ohio State from 1973 through 1976. In 1973, starting fullback Champ Henson was injured and converted linebacker Bruce Elia was named to start in Henson's place. By the end of that season, however, freshman fullback Johnson had worked his way up the depth chart. In 1974, Elia returned to the linebacker corps and Henson and Johnson alternated at fullback.
Although tailback Archie Griffin got most of the carries from 1972 to 1975, the Ohio State fullbacks still got the ball frequently and were expected to be major contributors, particularly in short-yardage situations. In 1972 the team's leading scorer was Henson, and in 1973 it was Elia. Johnson's best season was in 1975. Even though Griffin led the team with 1,450 rushing yards, Johnson still rushed for 1,059 yards and set single OSU single season records for rushing touchdowns (25) and scoring (156 points).
