The Permian Basin is a sedimentary basin largely contained in the western part of the U.S. state of Texas and the southeastern part of the state of New Mexico. It reaches from just south of Lubbock, to just south of Midland and Odessa, extending westward into the southeastern part of the adjacent state of New Mexico. It is so named because it has one of the world's thickest deposits of rocks from the Permiangeologic period. The greater Permian Basin comprises several component basins: of these, Midland Basin is the largest, Delaware Basin is the second largest, and Marfa Basin is the smallest. The Permian Basin extends beneath an area approximately 250 miles (400km) wide and 300 miles (480km) long.
The Permian Basin gives its name to a large oil and natural gas producing area, part of the Mid-Continent Oil Producing Area. Total production for that region up to the beginning of 1993 was over 14.9 billion barrels (2.37×109m3). The towns of Midland and Odessa serve as the headquarters for oil production activities in the basin.
The European Permian Basin is a thick sequence of sedimentary rocks deposited in a large sedimentary basin during the Permian period in North Europe. The basin underlies northern Poland, northern Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and under a significant portion of the North Sea to Scotland. A major natural gas discovery was made in the Rotliegend Formation at Schlochteren, Netherlands in 1959. The Rotliegend is the lower portion of the Permian sequence and consists of over 600 metres (2,000ft) of sandstones and evaporites. It is overlain by 1,000-metre (3,300ft) thick sequence of evaporites known as the Zechstein Formation.
How the Permian Basin Became North America's Hottest Oilfield | WSJ
The U.S. has more than doubled its crude oil output over the last decade. Much of the growth is due to the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico. WSJ traces the hotspot of North America’s crude oil boom, with a look at challenges that producers in the region face.

Permian Basin Decline Rates Have “Increased Dramatically” Amid Ongoing Slowdown
A new report says that production growth in the world’s most prolific unconventional basin is on the verge of stalling out.

“Base decline is the volume that oil and gas producers need to add from new wells just to stay where they are—it is the speed of the treadmill,” said Raoul LeBlanc, vice president of the unconventional oil and gas unit at IHS. “Because of the large increases of recent years, the base decline production rate for the Permian Basin has increased dramatically, and we expect those declines to continue to accelerate. As a result, it is going to be challenging, especially for some companies with cash constraints, just to keep production flat.”
