Why did the French Fail to Annex Saarland? (Short Animated Documentary)
The French, for many decades in the twentieth century, really wanted to annex a region in Germany called the Saarland. They wanted it because it had mountains of coal and industry which would bolster France's defences. Yet despite their winning two world wars they never managed to gain permanent control of it. But why not? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

Saarland the Alabama of Germany ?
So I decided to go to Saarland and find out about what the other places in Germany think of Saarland, about the jokes about Saarland the Alabama of Germany. But I find out that maybe 1/40 know what Saarland is!. I never though I would witness two German arguing what Saarland. some even said is it in Disney Land.

13th January 1935: The Saar votes to reunite with Germany in a plebiscite
In 1918 the Saar Basin was a heavily industrialised area that boasted a large number of coal mines. Following the Treaty of Versailles the area was occupied and governed by France and Britain under the auspices of the League of Nations. France was also given exclusive control of the area’s rich coal mines as part of the reparations agreement. The Treaty called for a plebiscite to decide the long-term future of the Saar region after a period of fifteen years.
By the time of the plebiscite Adolf Hitler had secured his position as the supreme leader of Germany. This had caused a number of people who opposed Nazi policies to move to the Saar Basin since it was the only part of Germany free from their rule. These people were keen for the area to remain under the League’s administration, but ma...

These people were keen for the area to remain under the League’s administration, but maintaining the status quo was unpopular with many other Germans in the area.
The Nazis launched an intensive pro-Germany campaign in the area that was led by propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels. As early as 1933, complaints that the Nazi campaign amounted to a ‘reign of terror’ had been noted by American political scientist Sarah Wambaugh who was one of the members of the commission sent to oversee the plebiscite. Although the Nazis did restrain their tactics by the end of 1934, the League of Nations still provided a peacekeeping force to monitor the plebiscite.
Voter turnout was 98% of all eligible voters, and 90.8% of them chose to re-join the German Reich. The overwhelming result surprised many observers, and acted as powerful propaganda for the Nazi Party.

The Forgotten Story Of Independent Saarland
After WW2, Germany was split in two parts: West Germany, and East Germany. And Saarland. Wait, what? As Germany prepares to celebrate 30 years of Reunification, I went to Saarland to discover the story of the little country that divorced and rejoined Germany... twice.

Saarland, Germany travel vlog! Small German towns, a Celtic village, and a massive stone ringwall!
After an amazing visit to Luxembourg City, I decided to head over the border for a short trip to small-town Germany. I've visited Germany a few times before but mostly big tourist spots. So I figured this would be a perfect chance to spend some time off the beaten path and see what I found. I'm so glad that I did! It was a super short trip but I got to spend some time in Saarland seeing a small German town (Otzenhausen), hiking in the forest, visiting a Celtic village, seeing a 2000-year-old stone ringwall, eating a doner kebab, and more! Check it out and see how I spent my nice, relaxing few days in Germany.

https://wn.com/Why_Did_The_French_Fail_To_Annex_Saarland_(Short_Animated_Documentary)

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Germany’s smallest state often goes unnoticed when people map out their itinerary through the country. With the cities of Bremen, Hamburg and Berlin set aside; the Saarland is Germany’s smallest state. At only 2,570 square kilometres, it’s 1.5 times the size of Greater London but could fit 27 times into the area which Bavaria, Germany’s largest state, occupies.
2. The Saarland as we know it today is not that old. The region became part of the German Reich on March 1, 1935, and after the end of the Second World War fell into the French occupation zone. While it gained autonomy in 1947, the state remained under the influence of the French with the French franc still being the official currency. The Saarland even had their own national football team and competed in the 1947 Summer Olympics in Helsinki.
3. Saarbrücken shifted six times between France and Germany since the late 17th century. Powerhouse of the industrial revolution, it is now a quieter place with a few good museums, art galleries and Baroque monuments.
4. A trip to the Saarland means you can tick off another UNESCO World Heritage Site off the list. The Völklingen Ironworks is situated only 15 kilometres outside of the state’s capital Saarbrücken. Equipped with a helmet, visitors can explore dystopian complex of bland concrete and rusty metal, walk into the dark corridors of the production site and climb one of the furnaces for views of the vast labyrinth of pipes, beams and smelters.
5. The Saarschleife is a breakthrough valley of the Saar through the Taunusquarzit and is one of the most famous attractions in the Saarland. Just around the corner from the then inconspicuous village of Mettlach, the Saar river winds its way through the dense forest. The Baumwipfelpfad Saarschleife treetop walk soars 42 metres into the sky and ends in a large observation deck which grants views of the dramatic river loop below. On the way up information panels tell you all about the landscape before you set your eyes on the idyllic landscape from up top, which is the most photographed scene in the entire Saarland.
6. Life in the tiny village Leidingen, 13 kilometres west of Saarlouis, is somewhat peculiar – the German-French border cuts right through it. The vast majority of the 220 inhabitants live in Germany and a couple of dozen in France. Even though the border is not visible and you can hop back and forth between the two countries as often as you like, different laws, rules and regulation apply to the people on each side.
7. If you think the Medieval ruins of Burg Montclair feel like travelling back in time, wait until you see the Borg Roman Villa. Archaeological excavations unearthed the ancient remains of this Roman mansion outside Perl and, after years of meticulous reconstruction, you can now wander around the complex of residential buildings, bathhouses, workshops, taverns and courtyards, and see what they would have looked like 2000 years ago.
