Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai says she was not sexually assaulted | DW News
Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai said on Sunday that she had never accused anyone of sexually assaulting her, and that a social media post she had made in November had been misunderstood.
"First, I need to stress one point that is extremely important, I have never said or written that anyone has sexually assaulted me, I have to clearly stress this point," Peng said in the video posted by Lianhe Zaobao, a Singapore media outlet.
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) responded on Monday to Peng's comments, saying her appearance did not "alleviate or address the WTA's significant concerns about her well-being and ability to communicate without censorship or coercion."
In her November social media post, Peng appeared to allege that a former Chinese vice premier, Zhang Gaoli, had sexually ass...

The head of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has cast doubt on an email that Chinese state media claims is from tennis player Peng Shuai, who has not been heard from since she made sexual assault allegations against a top Chinese government official two weeks ago.
In the email, Ms Peng purportedly says the allegations are "not true".
Steve Simon, chairman of the WTA, said the message "only raises" his concerns about Ms Peng's safety.
"I have a hard time believing that Peng Shuai actually wrote the email we received or believes what is being attributed to her," he said in a statement.
Written in her voice and published by the broadcaster CGTN, the email claims she is not missing or unsafe, adding: "I've just been resting at home and everything is fine."

Rarely, if ever, has a player’s no-show at a major tennis tournament been so noticeable or worrying. We're talking about this year’s Australian Open, but this story has nothing to do with Novak Djokovic. Much more sinister was the absence in Melbourne of Chinese tennis champion Peng Shuai. Concern about her wellbeing was first raised when she disappeared late last year, almost immediately after publicly accusing a communist party leader of sexually assaulting her. After being missing for several weeks, she’s now been seen at several carefully staged-managed events, including the Winter Olympics, but Peng Shuai’s reappearance has done little to convince the world she’s okay - or that China respects human rights.
