In 1965, Galveston businessman George Mitchell purchased a large parcel of land on Pelican Island and donated some of it for the permanent home of Texas A&M University at Galveston. The Intracoastal Waterway borders it to the north, separating Pelican Island from another island.
The rocky cliffs on the south western face of the island plunge into the sea, The National Park moorings make it a popular snorkeling and dive site. It is perfectly possible to land a boat on the other sides of the island, although there is not much to see.
In some older charts, Pelican Island is referred to as Witch Island, as is Flanagan Island. This confusion may be connected to a pre-1977 lack of clarification as to whether Flanagan formed part of the Danish (now US) islands or the British Virgin Islands.
Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while San Antonio is the second largest in the state and seventh largest in the United States. Dallas–Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and fifth largest United States metropolitan statistical areas, respectively. Other major cities include Austin (the state capital) and El Paso. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as a former independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texan state flag and on the Texan state seal. The origin of the state name, Texas, is from the word, "Tejas", which means 'friends' in the Caddo language.
The Texas was built in October 1856 for the Western & Atlantic Railroad by locomotive manufacturer Danforth, Cooke and Company in Paterson, New Jersey. It was subsequently shipped from Paterson to the Port of Savannah, traveled the Georgia Rail Road & Banking Company and Macon & Western Railroad, before finally being delivered to the W&A headquarters in Atlanta that same year.
Texas is a 2010 Lasse Stefanzstudio album. For the fourth year in a row, the band managed to top the Swedish albums chart. For the album, the band was also awarded a Grammis Award in the "Dansband of the year" category.
On 12 June 2011, the song "Skåneland" entered Svensktoppen. but was knocked out the upcoming week.
One lane of the Pelican Island Bridge is now open after a barge struck it on Wednesday morning. The bridge connects Pelican Island to Galveston, and Pelican Island is currently inaccessible by vehicle. Galveston County Judge Mark Henry says the people stranded on the island will be removed by boat.

Barge hits bridge connecting Galveston and Pelican Island, causing partial collapse and oil spill
A barge slammed into a bridge pillar in Galveston, Texas, on Wednesday, spilling oil into waters near busy shipping channels and closing the only road to a small neighboring island. No injuries were reported.
The impact sent pieces of the bridge, which connects Galveston to Pelican Island, tumbling on top of the barge and shut down a stretch of waterway so crews could clean up the spill. The accident knocked one man off the vessel and into the water, but he was quickly recovered and was not injured, said Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Ray Nolen.

While standing on Pier 21, you will be able to see pelican Island across the harbor. Pelican Island can only be accessed by the 51st St. bridge which can be seen at the far west end of Galveston Harbor. Today, Pelican Island is home to Texas A&M University in Galveston, Seawolf Park, and the Galveston Naval Museum, which exhibits a World War II era destroyer escort and submarine. Texas A&M University Galveston was established in 1965 by prominent Galveston businessman George P Mitchell. This campus is currently home to the Texas Maritime Academy, one of the seven Maritime Academy‘s in the United States. The campus is also world renowned for its maritime business and marine biology programs. Pelican Island is mostly man-made from mud pulled from the Galveston, Texas City, and Houston ship channels during dredging projects over the past century. When a ship channel is deepens and widened, there needs to be a place to put the mud and pelican island became the ideal place for engineers looking for a place to expand real estate in Galveston bay. Over the past 100 years, the island has steadily grown into what you see today. When you look at maps dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, you will see two small islands north of Galveston itself. These were known as Pelican Island and pelican spit. Seawolf Park sits at the location of pelican spit and it’s also where one of the quarantine stations for immigration was built in the early 1900s. If you have time on your trip to Galveston, I highly recommend driving to the far east end of pelican Island to experience the Galveston Naval Museum and Seawolf Park. Seawolf Park is known in this part of Texas as a first class fishing destination. As you look across the water from Pier 21, you probably see ships, oil rigs, tugboats, or possibly all of the above. Pelican Island is Home to multiple Maritime related businesses including dry docks for vessel and oil rig repair, tugboat companies, offshore vessel services and even a dock specifically made to load crude oil onto shipping vessels.
