Paul Oliver

Paul Oliver (born Paul Hereford Oliver, 25 May 1927, Nottingham, England) is a British architectural historian and writer on the blues and other forms of African-American music. His commentary and research into blues have been influential.

Biography

Oliver was a researcher at the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (Department of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University), and from 1978-88 was Associate Head of the School of Architecture. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1999) and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Gloucestershire (2007). He has argued that vernacular architecture will be necessary in the future to "ensure sustainability in both cultural and economic terms beyond the short term." He is well known for his 1997 work Encyclopedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World. Spanning three volumes and 2500 pages, it includes contributions from researchers from 80 countries. As of 2005, he was at work on a book to be called the World Atlas of Vernacular Architecture.

Paul Oliver (American football)

Paul J. Oliver (March 30, 1984 – September 24, 2013) was an American football safety of the National Football League who was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 Supplemental NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. He was also briefly a member of the New Orleans Saints.

Early years

Oliver was heavily recruited as a Parade High School All-American for the Harrison High School Hoyas. He was also ranked as the #1 cornerback by Rivals.com in 2003, and at 185 pounds timed unofficially with a 4.32 second 40 yard dash and a 37 inch vertical jump.

College career

Oliver decided to stay close to home and committed to playing college football at the University of Georgia. After redshirting for a year, Oliver developed into a key reserve in his first two years playing, earning him preseason third-team All-SEC honors before his 3rd year. Oliver, thrust into a starting role broke out as one of the best corners in the SEC his junior year. In his first game as a starter, filling in for the injured DeMario Minter, Oliver shut down University of Florida star Chad Jackson, holding him to only 2 catches for 22 yards. Oliver was awarded with Georgia's Most Improved Defensive Player Award after the 2005 season.

Paul Ambrose Oliver

Paul Ambrose Oliver (July 18, 1831 – May 17, 1912) was an American explosives inventor, American Civil War Union Army captain and staff officer who was appointed to the brevet grade of brigadier general and Medal of Honor recipient. He was born on the "Louisiana", his father's merchant ship, during one of its voyages in the English Channel. Before the Civil War, he worked as a shipping merchant.

In January 1862, Oliver joined the 12th New York Infantry as a second lieutenant. During the war, he served as an aide to no less than 4 generals, including Daniel Butterfield, George Meade, Joseph Hooker and Gouverneur K. Warren. While he accepted a promotion to Captain in April 1864, he declined further promotions. On March 8, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln nominated Oliver for appointment as a brevet brigadier general to rank from March 8, 1865 and the U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment on March 10, 1865. Oliver resigned his commission on May 6, 1865.

Oliver was an inventor and powder manufacturer after the Civil War.
