He was the founder and the producer of the band. O'Neill came up with an idea that did not look good on paper – mixing Prog, Metal and Christmas but it worked via the Trans-Siberian Orchestra .
O'Neill had been suffering from a chronic illness. The band released the following statement: "The entire Trans-Siberian Orchestra family, past and present, is heartbroken to share the devastating news that Paul O'Neill has passed away from chronic illness, He was our friend and our leader – a truly creative spirit and an altruistic soul. This is a profound and indescribable loss for us all."
He also wrote or co-wrote and played guitar many of their tunes. Even music lovers not that familiar with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra will have heard their hit, "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24," an instrumental medley of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Carol of the Bells." It was originally released by the Metal group Savatage the year before in 1995 a band that O'Neill produced. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra featured both Jon Oliva and Al Pitrelli of Savatage. Oliva has said that his old group didn't make any real money until O'Neill started producing them. He also did production on Aerosmith's Classics Live!, Vol. 1 and 2, albums.
The Trans-Siberian Orchestra had huge bombastic music, light shows and are one of the concert draws each year. In 2016 they sold more than 927,000 tickets, grossing more than $56.9 million. - by John Beaudin

Paul O'Neill (February 23, 1956 – April 5, 2017) was an American music composer, lyricist, producer, and songwriter.
A New York City native, O'Neill began playing guitar with a number of rock bands in high school and quickly graduated to folk guitar gigs at downtown clubs. O'Neill took his first serious musical steps in the mid 1970s when he took his first progressive rock band, Slowburn, into Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios in New York City. It was there that he first met engineer Dave Wittman who had the ability to capture on tape the sounds O'Neill was hearing in his head. However he has credited Slowburn's initial failure as one of the luckiest thing that could have ever happened to him for it gave him the opportunity to learn the recording and concert business from the inside out. All the little nuances of how you broke acts in America and Canada, which was different from, Europe, Asia but more importantly how to make your artist success last. He landed a position at Leber-Krebs Inc., the management company that launched the careers of Aerosmith, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Ted Nugent, The New York Dolls, Scorpions and Joan Jett among others. Among other bands, O'Neill helmed Aerosmith's Classics Live I and Classics Live II albums before beginning a fortuitous relationship with the band Savatage. It introduced him to Jon Oliva, Bob Kinkel and Al Pitrelli, as well as reconnecting him with legendary studio engineer Dave Wittman, who all became key original collaborators in O'Neill's grand vision – Trans-Siberian Orchestra. TSO’s debut album Christmas Eve and Other Stories was the first installment of the Christmas trilogy and it followed with the second album The Christmas Attic and the final installment The Lost Christmas Eve. TSO released their first non-holiday rock opera the gold certified Beethoven's Last Night. He was in the midst of a number of projects by the time of his passing.
O'Neill's death was announced in a brief note posted on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra website on April 5, 2017, which cited chronic illness. His body was discovered in an Embassy Suites hotel room in Tampa Bay, Florida. He was 61.

The band has released a series of rock operas: Christmas Eve and Other Stories, The Christmas Attic, Beethoven's Last Night, The Lost Christmas Eve, their two-disc Night Castle and Letters From the Labyrinth. Trans-Siberian Orchestra is also known for their extensive charity work and elaborate concerts, which include a string section, a light show, lasers, moving trusses, video screens, and effects synchronized to music.
Both Billboard Magazine and Pollstar have ranked them as one of the top twenty-five ticket-selling bands in the first decade of the new millennium. Their path to success was unusual in that, according to O'Neill, TSO is the first major rock band to go straight to theaters and arenas, having never played at a club, never having an opening act and never being an opening act.
