Paul Field (born 3 May 1961) is an Australian musician. He is best known as one of the founding members of the Sydneypub rock band The Cockroaches and The Field Brothers and as Managing Director for the children's music group The Wiggles.
Early life and education
Field was educated at St Joseph's College Hunters Hill, where he excelled as a rugby player and musician. Upon leaving school he attained his teaching qualification from Australian Catholic University and a diploma of religious education from Aquinas Academy in Sydney.
In the late 1970s, while still at boarding school he and his brothers John and Anthony formed the pop group The Cockroaches. Paul served as lead vocalist for the band and also booked their first live shows in pubs in the inner city of Sydney and Kings Cross.
Career
The Cockroaches
The Cockroaches enjoyed some success in Australia, producing three albums, one of which, The Cockroaches, sold 100,000 copies and became platinum. The band consisted of the three Field brothers, who played guitar and vocals, fellow boarding-school student Tony Henry, who played drums, Phil Robinson on bass, and Jeff Fatt on keyboards. According to Anthony Field, Paul Field was "a picture of professional efficiency", whereas John Field was the showman of the group. John Field's performances on-stage built the Cockroaches' reputation for being a party-band, even through alcohol and drug use was never part of the band's culture. In the heyday of The Cockroaches, they played over 300 gigs a year all over Australia; according to Anthony Field, they were "one of the biggest crowd-drawing groups in Australia". Australian musicologist Ian McFarland called The Cockroaches "an in-demand pub band [that built] a sweaty, frenzied atmosphere with good old-fashioned showmanship and unpretentious, energetic rock'n'pop".
Working as a professional composer, producer and musician since the mid-1970s Field has won an Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors and a Dove Award from GMA in Nashville. He has also been nominated for Dove Awards on two other occasions. Many artists around the world have recorded his songs and his production and arrangement credits range from country to gospel to classical and back to rock and pop.
Field's song "Testify to Love" (co-written with Ralph van Manen) and Henk Pool) has been a US hit three times: first a #1 for Avalon and also for Wynonna Judd on the double platinum CD "Touched by an Angel" (soundtrack to the TV show) which made No. 3 in the Billboard Chart. More recently the song was re-released as the title track on Avalon's platinum 'Greatest Hits' CD.
Paul Field (born June 24, 1967) is an English bobsledder who competed in the early 1990s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he earned his best finish of seventh in the four-man event at Albertville in 1992. He is also well known as the 1994 UK Gladiators men's champion, as well as the runner-up in the first International Gladiators competition behind America's Wesley Two Scoops Berry, albeit in controversial circumstances following a severe albeit unintentional tackle by American gladiator Hawk, during the Powerball event in the Grand Final. Because of his successful achievements and all-round good sportsmanship, he is still highly regarded amongst fans of the series, and is known as one of the greatest contenders in the history of Gladiators as a global franchise, especially during its mid '90s heyday.
Paul Field grew up in Hemel Hempstead where he competed for Dacorum Athletics Club. In the 1980s he was the third ranked British decathlete behind Daley Thompson. Paul still lives in Hemel Hempstead with his wife and 3 children.
