Pat Ward (c. 1957 – October 15, 2012) was an Iowa State Senator from the 30th District. A Republican, her service in the Iowa Senate began in 2004, when she won a special election to fill the vacancy left when Mary Kramer was appointed to be U.S. Ambassador to Barbados. It ended with her death in 2012. She had a B.S. in Business and Legal Studies from Central Missouri State University.
Senate career
Ward served on several committees in the Iowa Senate - the Commerce committee; the Environment and Energy Independence; the Judiciary committee; the Ways and Means committee; the Government Oversight committee, where she was the ranking member; and the Labor and Business Relations committee, where she was the ranking member.
Ward ran unopposed in the Iowa Senate District 30 Republican Primary on June 8, 2004, and she took 62% of the vote in the general election November 2, 2004, defeating both Satro Narayan (Democrat) and Sean Edward Martin (Libertarian).
Ward was last re-elected in 2008 with 21,842 votes, running unopposed. Ward was running for re-election when she died and remained on the November 2012 ballot. At the time of her death, she was serving as the Assistant Minority Leader of the Iowa Senate. As ballots for the 2012 election were already printed, she remained on the ballot for the election. State law mandated a special election be held to determine Ward's successor, which was held on December 11, 2012.
He was born in Dumbarton, and after playing for junior side Glasgow Perthshire he was signed by Hibernian. He made his debut for Hibs on 24 March 1951 against St. Mirren, although he did not play many games in his first three seasons. Ward made his breakthrough in 1953-54, with 26 appearances, although after a further 19 matches in the following campaign, he was transferred to Leicester City. In all he played 53 times for Hibs, scoring one goal (against Raith Rovers on 16 October 1954).
He made a total of 57 Football League appearances for Leicester, and for a time kept Colin Appleton out of the left half position.
Ward left Leicester for Crewe Alexandra, and made 31 League appearances for them before joining Bedford Town.
According to Lance Tingay of The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail, Hales was ranked in the world top ten in 1955 and 1956, reaching a career high of World No. 8 in those rankings in 1956.
Pat Ward Williams is an African American photographer whose work often engages with the complexities of race, gender, and history. In addition to her smaller-scale photographs and installations, she has designed three public artworks in Los Angeles.
One of Williams’ best known works is Accused/Blowtorch/Padlock (1986), which consists of an image of a black man tied to a tree (originally published in Life magazine in 1937 and not attributed to a specific photographer) surrounded by text expressing the artist’s reaction to this image. The text poses questions that the viewer can consider, such as “Can you be BLACK and look at this?,” “How can this photograph exist?” and “Could Hitler show pics of the Holocaust just to keep the JEWS in line?” The text ends with the phrase “Somebody do something.”
Williams has explained her intent in the work and how that relates to the title of the piece: “I force the viewer to look at what is really going on by dissecting the important body of information and by directing with text what the viewer should notice: the tied hands (accused), the scarred back (blowtorch), and the lock, chain, and tree (padlock).” Art historian Dora Apel has argued that in including the text of her own response to the image, Williams “attempts to define for the viewer the relationship between violence, spectacle, and public representation.”
