After four years at Selhurst Park he joined Charlton, where he spent a further four years before retiring, having begun preparing for the move into management that was to follow.
He entered management in 1999 with Reading, who he led to promotion from Division Two in 2002, before he was recruited by West Ham a year later.
His first season with the London club concluded with defeat to Crystal Palace in the 2004 Division One play-off final – he also experienced defeat in the Division Two final with Reading in 2001 – but he responded by leading them back into the Premier League 12 months later.
Pardew then inspired his team to within minutes of winning one of the great FA Cup finals, in 2006, before they eventually lost on penalties to Liverpool, earning further jobs at Charlton and Southampton as a result of that success.
Having sacked Chris Hughton in December 2010, Newcastle appointed Alan Pardew as his successor. In his first full season in charge, he oversaw their best ever start to a season they eventually finished in fifth place, qualifying for the following season's Europa League.
After four years there, Pardew moved to Crystal Palace, succeeding Neil Warnock. Palace were in a relegation battle when he took over but he led them away from the bottom three, and they rose to 10th – their highest ever finish in the Premier League.
Their fine form continued at the start of the following campaign, to the extent that they concluded 2015 in fifth place. Poor league form in 2016, amid their run to the FA Cup final, then led to Pardew losing his job that Christmas.
His next job came a year later, at West Brom, who were struggling against relegation. He was unable to inspire them to safety, and left only five months after arriving.
