Their albums The Divine Wings of Tragedy and V: The New Mythology Suite have given the band considerable attention within the progressive metal community. They also have achieved more commercial success with the 2007 album Paradise Lost and the 2011 album Iconoclast, which reached number 76 on the Billboard 200. Romeo explained the band's name in a 2008 interview; "So, you know, the music we were coming up with had the keyboard thing and the guitar, and some classical elements, so the word ‘Symphony’ came up and, so the dramatic thing, you know? So then, somebody said ‘Symphony X’ and we were like, ‘yeah, that’s cool’ it is that kinda thing, and the ‘X’ is the unknown and all the other stuff we do."
Symphony X is the first studio album by progressive metal band Symphony X, released in 1994 through Zero Corporation (Japan) and reissued in 1996 through Inside Out Music (Europe); a remastered edition was reissued on January 13, 2004 through Inside Out. The album's release came about as a result of guitarist Michael Romeo's 1994 solo album, The Dark Chapter, achieving success in Japan. This is the only Symphony X album to feature singer Rod Tyler, who would be replaced by Russell Allen on their subsequent album The Damnation Game. "Masquerade" was re-recorded and renamed as "Masquerade '98" for the 1999 compilation album Prelude to the Millennium.
Critical reception
Robert Taylor at AllMusic gave Symphony X 1.5 stars out of 5, noting the predominant Yngwie Malmsteen influences throughout the music and calling the album "Humble beginnings for what was to become a very original and influential band."
Paradise Lost is the seventh studio album by progressive metal band Symphony X, released on June 26, 2007 through Inside Out Music. It is a concept album loosely inspired by John Milton's 1667 epic poem Paradise Lost. The album was the band's first to chart on the U.S. Billboard 200, reaching No. 123 and remaining on that chart for a week, as well as reaching No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers and the top 100 in five other countries.
Overview
Style
The album's release had been delayed numerous times since the announcement on November 16, 2005 that the band was going to "start pulling it all together". In a fan club chat on March 18, 2006, guitarist and main songwriter Michael Romeo said that the album will be "a bit darker—the direction is still the same—for the most part", and went on to say that "the classical stuff was getting to a point where we need to evolve the music a bit. There is still a lot of classic influence in there—not as obvious as '[Out of the] Ashes', say". He went on to suggest that there may be a song or songs on the album themed around the works of H. P. Lovecraft, and that there would be "A big tune on here ... Paradise Lost is the theme as of now", lending rumor to the title of the album.
Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings is a musical work of theatre, with music by composer Eric Whitacre, lyrics by Whitacre and David Noroña, and book by poet Edward Esch, set in two acts. The innovative music combines styles of opera, musical theater, cinematic music, as well as electronic music techniques of trance music, ambient music, and techno to portray the story of an abandoned tribe of angels in search of their wings. Although it has various non-classical influences, it is meant to be performed by singers with operatic or musical theater backgrounds.
Roles
Synopsis
The musical begins with a prologue set years before. The angels of light leave their children behind a rock wall in preparation for the battle with the forces of darkness. The children are left without wings, which leaves them unarmed and mortal, until the war has ended. The angels of light promise to return soon, with wings and to bring the children home.
Seventeen years later, the angels of light still have not returned. Logos and his henchman, Ignis, two of the many angel children who were left long ago, are creating a powerful army by engaging the tribe in nightly combats. This vigorous training is conducted because of Logos’s belief of a darkness beyond the wall.
Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky update the case of the West Memphis Three since the release of Paradise Lost 2: Revelations in 2000. Damien Echols's defense team has hired some of the most renowned forensic scientists to collect DNA and other evidence that had never been tested during the 1994 trials in hopes of getting a new trial. The defense teams and supporters of Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley have uncovered new details that occurred during the trial that led to guilty verdicts against them.
In Paradise Lost 2, Bruce Sinofsky and Joe Berlinger visit support groups for Damien Echols, sentenced to lethal injection in the first film, and revisit John Mark Byers, who is facing gossip about his possible involvement with the murder of his son. Echols is appealing his sentence and his defense attorney notices what he believes to be bite marks in a photograph of the face of one of the victims; the prosecution argues that the marks are from a belt buckle and not teeth.
The three boys convicted in the first film are all tested and do not match the alleged "bite marks" on the victim. The support groups for Echols want Byers to have his bitemark compared to the one on the photo, but Byers has had false teeth since four years after his son's murder. Byers gave the Defense copies of his dental records and they didn't match the "bite marks" either. Byers takes a polygraph to prove his innocence but is on a variety of medications that could affect the outcome of the test, including Xanax and Haldol; he passes the polygraph test.

Symphony X - Paradise Lost Lyrics
This was the very first song I heard that got me introduced to Progressive music and metal shortly after. Still one of my personal favorites.
Lyrics:
In the cold misty morning
Gleaming rays awake the dawn
Here I stand, a stranger in this land
Does your conscience betray you?
Falling from grace
Feel the sun on my face
Does desire still hold true?
Mystified by her beauty
Does the hunter pity his pray
Under starless skies
All love must die and fade away
Take my hand, divine or damned
Make a stand, seize the day
Oh, yours or mine, damned of divine
Draw the line, come what may
Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye
To paradise

Also the FC run was done on the ScoreSpy client (not public don't ask me about it) so that's what the scores on the side and the input counter is about, as well as being able to essentially prove I didn't fake this FC regardless of the cuts due to SS having anti cheat/tamper built into the client (as well as there being other scores already on the exact chart), not that I really think anybodoy would doubt me on stuff like this.
Other than needing to explain all that, I'm super proud of this FC, probably my 2nd best FC due to a bunch of tricky solos and riffs scattered throughout the entire album so I'm really glad I got this especially since it was first run ever past Walls of Babylon (amazed I never lost a run to Seven at the least).

Say goodbye, goodbye, horror.
So I've cheated and I've lied
Been the victim of foolish pride
And I've begged and I've crawled
And I've battled it and bled for it all
Now I'll savor the downfall
Of paradise
