Dig into the science of what triggers panic attacks, how to recognize them, and the available treatments for panic disorder.
--
Countless poets and writers have tried to put words to the experience of a panic attack— a sensation so overwhelming, many people mistake it for a heart attack, stroke, or other life-threatening crisis. Studies suggest that almost a third of us will experience at least one panic attack in our lives. So what exactly is a panic attack, and can we prevent them? Cindy J. Aaronson investigates.

Panic attacks can be terrifying, but they aren't dangerous. When we engage with our panic attacks by trying to control our panic attacks, by trying to force our body's sensations to calm down, or by believing our brain's stories that "This panic attack is actually a heart attack" or "I have to calm down!" or "It will be catastrophic to have a panic attack" then that is the real thing that keeps panic attacks going.

How to Break a Panic Attack in 2 Minutes | Dr. Daniel Amen and Nikki Leigh #panicattack
Dr. Daniel Amen and actress/model Nikki Leigh demonstrate a technique to break a panic attack in 2 minutes.
Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder in which a person experiences recurrent panic attacks. A panic attack involves sudden feelings of intense fear and worry combined with overwhelming physical symptoms even though there is no real danger present. Panic attacks themselves are not life-threatening, but they can make you feel like you can’t breathe like you’re having a heart attack, or like you might die. Panic attacks tend to come on suddenly and without warning. They can hit you anywhere at any time—even in places you would expect to feel safe. For example, a panic attack can wake you from a sound sleep in your own bed, hit you when you’re on vacation at the beach, or strike...

In this video I share to email I got from one of my listeners, Jon, who had been having panic attacks for over 30 years and he had tried everything, but when he finally stopped trying to control his panic and really leaned in and allowed himself to have feelings- then Panic no longer had any control over him.
You can follow his example and learn how you can stop panic attacks too.

OK, in the last two videos we talked about the difference between an anxiety attack and a panic attack, and how you can get stuck in a cycle of having panic attacks. In this video we’ll talk about how to stop panic attacks. It’s a bit paradoxical, but it works.
In the previous video we talked about the panic attack cycle. 1- a sensation or feeling, 2- you judge that feeling to be unacceptable, bad or dangerous, 3- this triggers an escalating FFF response, and 4- your brain learns that panic and anxiety are “dangerous”.
So let’s take a deeper look at step 2, the thoughts that transform a physical sensation into something we see as dangerous. Here are common ways of thinking that trigger panic attacks.
The Big issue is believing that panic attacks are dangerous.
Panic attacks are inconvenient, they are uncomfortable, they can be embarrassing or they can interfere with what you want to be doing- but they aren’t physically dangerous.
All these uncomfortable symptoms are just the body tossing you into FFF mode, which makes it less likely that you’ll pass out, stop breathing or any of those other fears. If someone is having a panic attack and they go to the ER, an EKG will show a regular, but rapid heartbeat. You pass out with low blood pressure, a panic attack takes your blood pressure up. Heart attacks feel worse when you walk around, move about, panic attacks feel better.

So, you’re having a panic attack?
If you’re right in the middle of a panic attack, this video is for you. For many people, a panic attack feels like a lot of intense physical symptoms. Maybe your heart is pounding, you feel faint or tingly, you’re afraid that you’re going to pass out or have a heart attack. In this video we’ll walk you through how to know if it’s anxiety causing those symptoms and some practical steps to stop the panic cycle. Because you’re going to be ok. You are safe.
These sensations feel scary but they’re not going to hurt you.
First let’s try this experiment- does moving around make it better or worse? If walking around makes you feel a little better, that’s one indicator that this is anxiety, not a physical condition. Panic Attacks are the physical sensations of the FFF response going into overdrive, not a heart attack. Panic attacks are caused by being afraid of the FFF symptoms.
These symptoms feel really uncomfortable, they feel really scary, but Anxiety and panic won’t harm you- they usually resolve within 5-10 minutes. And by dropping the struggle against them, you may be able to help them resolve faster. Now there are two approaches to dealing with anxiety attacks and panic attacks, this one is the “Roll with it” method and the other one is the calm down method- after watching this video, check out my other video to try the other technique too and see which one works for your situation.
The real problem is not the anxiety or the sensations, - it’s the belief that they are dangerous- So if you’re struggling to calm your body down, you might think “I can’t feel this way. I have to breathe slower, I Have to calm down”- you’re essentially telling your brain that these feelings are dangerous. This heightens the anxiety cycle.
Let’s stop the cycle of panic attacks by showing your brain that anxiety is not dangerous, you can feel anxiety and still be 100% safe.
So say this:
“This is uncomfortable but not dangerous.”
“Even though this is uncomfortable, I am safe.”
Say “I can handle feeling this” “this will pass” Emotions and sensations come and go like waves, this will too.”

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

For example, a panic attack can wake you from a sound sleep in your own bed, hit you when you’re on vacation at the beach, or strike you while you’re in church. The distressing feelings can linger long after the initial onset of the panic attack. You may begin to live in fear of having another attack and begin avoiding places or situations where you think it might happen again. This can ruin your quality of life and cause problems at work, at school, and at home.
