Organization of American States
The Organization of American States (Spanish: Organización de los Estados Americanos, Portuguese: Organização dos Estados Americanos, French: Organisation des États Américains), or the OAS or OEA, is an inter-continental organization founded on 30 April 1948, for the purposes of regional solidarity and cooperation among its member states. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States, the OAS's members are the 35 independent states of the Americas.
As of 26 May 2015, the Secretary General of OAS is Luis Almagro.
History
The notion of an international union in the New World was first put forward by Simón Bolívar who, at the 1826 Congress of Panama (still being part of Colombia), proposed creating a league of American republics, with a common military, a mutual defense pact, and a supranational parliamentary assembly. This meeting was attended by representatives of Gran Colombia (comprising the modern-day countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela), Peru, Bolivia, The United Provinces of Central America, and Mexico but the grandly titled "Treaty of Union, League, and Perpetual Confederation" was ultimately ratified only by Gran Colombia. Bolívar's dream soon floundered with civil war in Gran Colombia, the disintegration of Central America, and the emergence of national rather than New World outlooks in the newly independent American republics. Bolívar's dream of American unity was meant to unify Hispanic American nations against external powers.

Pan American Union Building
The Pan American Union Building is the headquarters for the Organization of American States. It is located at 17th Street N.W. between C Street N.W. and Constitution Avenue, Northwest, Washington, D.C. The cornerstone was laid on May 11, 1908, by Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, and Andrew Carnegie, and the building was dedicated on April 26, 1910.
In 1919, the initial meeting of the International Labor Organization was held in the building, and in 1921, the Washington Naval Conference was held there.
In 1969, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Pan-American (train)
The Pan-American was a passenger train operated by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N) between Cincinnati, Ohio and New Orleans, Louisiana. It operated from 1921 until 1971. From 1921 to 1965 a section served Memphis, Tennessee via Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Pan-American was the L&N's flagship train until the introduction of the Humming Bird in 1946. Its name honored the substantial traffic the L&N carried to and from the seaports on the Gulf of Mexico. The Pan-American was one of many trains discontinued when Amtrak began operations in 1971.
History
The L&N introduced the Pan-American on December 5, 1921. A section of the train diverged at Bowling Green, Kentucky to serve Memphis, Tennessee. At the outset the train carried both sleepers and coaches, and was noteworthy for its all-steel construction in an era when wood heavyweight coaches were still common. The name honored the substantial traffic the L&N carried to and from the seaports on the Gulf of Mexico. It covered the 921 miles (1,482 km) from Cincinnati to New Orleans in 26 hours, soon shortened to exactly 24 hours. The train proved popular with the traveling public, and in 1925 was re-equipped as an "All-Pullman" (no coaches) train. The economic pressures of the Great Depression forced the Pan-American to start carrying coaches again in 1933.

"Pan American" is a song written and recorded by Hank Williams. It was his final single on Sterling Records after moving to MGM in April 1947.
Background
"Pan American" was Williams' attempt to rewrite Roy Acuff's immensely popular version of the Carter Family's "Wabash Cannonball." Along with the church, Acuff was arguably Williams' biggest musical influence; in 1952 he insisted to Ralph Gleason, "He's the biggest singer this music ever knew. You booked him and you didn't worry about crowds. For drawing power in the South, it was Roy Acuff, then God." "Pan American" was about the Pan American Clipper, a train that ran daily on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad from Cincinnati to New Orleans via Montgomery, highballing it through Greenville and other small towns that Hank knew very well. The song was recorded in Nashville with Fred Rose producing. Williams was backed by Tommy Jackson (fiddle), Dale "Smokey" Lohman (steel guitar), Zeke Turner (electric guitar), and Louis Innis (bass). The single did not chart.

The work of the OAS is based on four pillars democracy, human rights, security, and development. OAS electoral observation missions help to strengthen political processes and increase transparency throughout the Americas. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights monitors the situation in the member states, responds to individual petitions and promotes and protects human rights. The OAS promotes cooperation on security to prevent and respond to traditional and new threats . It also helps states search for solutions to drug trafficking and addiction, and contributes to efforts in confronting transnational organized crime, fighting terrorism and improving public safety. OAS scholarship programs have enabled tens of thousands of young people to study at world class universities, contributing to development in the Americas. The Organization has been responsive on issues such as disaster mitigation, renewable energy, water security, and has provided technical support for teacher training and small business development.
The OAS also looks to the future. Member States have defined clear goals and expectations, and the Organization is reinventing itself to meet them as a modern, efficient and results-oriented institution, that addresses the most pressing needs of the people of the Americas.

This peace tree was planted in 1910 during the inauguration of the House of the Americas It was then the headquarters of the Pan-American Union, created to bring unity, peace and prosperity to the hemisphere.
In 1948, this Pan-American Union became the Organization of American States.
Today, it includes all 35 independent nations of the Americas. From Tierra del Fuego to Alaska, from the deserts of northern Mexico to the Amazon rainforests, from the islands of the Caribbean to the towering Andes.
OAS member states encompass a vast array of languages, ethnicities, and cultures.
At the OAS, they are committed to shared values and principles, working together to strengthen areas of common interest, sort out their differences and bring progress, development and wellbeing to their citizens.
“Today, this organization is the regional watchdog in defense of democracy, freedom and human rights. Countries have committed themselves to these values by legal instruments such as the Inter-American Democratic Charter, the American Convention on Human Rights and all the other Inter American Conventions. Our job is to uphold
the highest standards. We must be objective, analyze the facts and, when we see corruption, inequality, or threats to freedom, we must speak out. In these cases we cannot be neutral.”

The work of the OAS is based on four pillars democracy, human rights, security, and development. OAS electoral observation missions help to strengthen political processes and increase transparency throughout the Americas. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights monitors the situation in the member states, responds to individual petitions and promotes and protects human rights. The OAS promotes cooperation on security to prevent and respond to traditional and new threats . It also helps states search for solutions to drug trafficking and addiction, and contributes to efforts in confronting transnational organized crime, fighting terrorism and improving public safety. OAS scholarship programs have enabled tens of thousands of young people to study at world class universities, contributing to development in the Americas. The Organization has been responsive on issues such as disaster mitigation, renewable energy, water security, and has provided technical support for teacher training and small business development.
The OAS also looks to the future. Member States have defined clear goals and expectations, and the Organization is reinventing itself to meet them as a modern, efficient and results-oriented institution, that addresses the most pressing needs of the people of the Americas.

History
The notion of an international union in the New World was first put forward by Simón Bolívar who, at the 1826 Congress of Panama (still being part of Colombia), proposed creating a league of American republics, with a common military, a mutual defense pact, and a supranational parliamentary assembly. This meeting was attended by representatives of Gran Colombia (comprising the modern-day countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela), Peru, Bolivia, The United Provinces of Central America, and Mexico but the grandly titled "Treaty of Union, League, and Perpetual Confederation" was ultimately ratified only by Gran Colombia. Bolívar's dream soon floundered with civil war in Gran Colombia, the disintegration of Central America, and the emergence of national rather than New World outlooks in the newly independent American republics. Bolívar's dream of American unity was meant to unify Hispanic American nations against external powers.
