What Happened To Pan Am’s Worldport at New York-JFK?
For those of us that can remember flying from Pan American’s famous Worldport at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), it will always be a symbol of aviation’s golden age.
In 1955 the airport operator The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (known as Idlewild Airports at the time) had a master plan to include several terminals built around a central area that could all be served by a looping access road. At the time, Pan American Airways was considered a leader in international air journeys and wanted to make a statement about its lofty aspirations with a state-of-the-art terminal building.

Pan Am's Worldport Prophecy
Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) constructed Terminal 3 aka UTB or Unit Terminal Building at Idlewild Airport (now known as JFK Airport) in Queens, New York, USA. It operated from 24 May 1960 to 24 May 2013 prior to its demolition.
It was most famous for its circular "flying saucer" roof designed to permit all-weather passenger connections to airplanes.
It also originally featured a 12-piece "Zodiac Screen" collection of sculptures, then considered the largest sculpture in the world, as designed by Milton Hebald. The details of this work will be featured in an upcoming video.
In 1971, the structure was updated to accommodate the Boeing 747 and it was then renamed as Pan Am Worldport.

This peculiar film entitled "Jet Terminal" was made by Pan Am Airlines in 1959 to promote the completion of the JFK Airport's Terminal 3, also known by the trademarked name "Worldport." Made with an avant garde fashion that combines black and white footage with color material, and with almost no spoken dialogue or sound effects, the movie shows how the airline's new, high tech terminal makes everything about air travel easy -- and glamorous. The film features the Boeing 707 jetliner, first introduced in 1958.
Terminal 3, also known by the trademarked name Worldport, was an iconic airport terminal built by Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York, United States. It opened on May 24, 1960 and ceased operations on May 24, 2013; it was demolished in late 2013.
The terminal was originally known as the "Pan Am Terminal" or Pan Am "Unit Terminal Building (UTB)." It was designed by Ives, Turano & Gardner Associated Architects and Walther Prokosch of Tippets-Abbett-McCarthy-Stratton as a showcase for international jet travel and is particularly famous for its 4-acre (1.6 ha) "flying saucer" roof suspended far from the outside columns of the terminal by 32 sets of pre-stressed steel posts and cables. The terminal was designed to allow for aircraft to be parked under the partial overhang; marketing brochures promoted that the jet-age terminal brought the plane to the passenger. The overhang sheltered passengers as they boarded the aircraft by stairs or by uncovered bridges. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Guide to New York City called the terminal a "genuine architectural attempt to answer the problem of all-weather connections to the planes" but derided the overall concept as "compromised by an overabundance of distracting detail".
The building's facade originally featured zodiac figures made by sculptor Milton Hebald, although these were later removed by the Port Authority. The terminal featured the Panorama Room, a dining room with a view of the entire concourse, and the Clipper Hall museum of Pan Am history.
In 1971, the terminal was expanded to accommodate the large Boeing 747 and renamed the "Pan Am Worldport". The Worldport was the world's largest airline terminal and held the title for several years.
In 2012 operation of the Worldport changed hands when Pan Am declared bankruptcy in 1991. Delta Air Lines acquired many of Pan Am's assets, including the lease on the Worldport, which became known simply as "Terminal 3", and operated most of its long-haul flights out of JFK to Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America from the building
In March 2006, Delta COO Jim Whitehurst announced that Delta would spend US$10 million before the end of that year to renovate Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, including its public spaces, BusinessElite lounge, and Crown Room Clubs. In the July 2007 issue of Delta's Sky Magazine, Delta Senior Vice President Joanne Smith remarked on the "distinctive" saucer roof in an article on new flooring, lighting, and signage at this "historic airport".
On August 4, 2010, The New York Times reported that Delta was planning to move its international flights to Terminal 4 following the construction of nine additional gates in Concourse B of that terminal. Delta's domestic flights would continue to be operated out of Terminal 2. Terminal 3 would subsequently be demolished to create additional aircraft parking between Terminals 2 and 4. Construction of the Terminal 4 expansion began in November 2010 and was completed in May 2013.
On May 23, 2013, the final departure from Terminal 3, Delta Air Lines Flight 268, a Boeing 747-400 to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport, departed from Gate 6 at 11:25pm local time. The terminal ceased operations on the next day, 53 years to the day from when it opened. Demolition of the terminal began on June 23, 2013.

Built in 1963 for Pan American World Airways, on the grounds of Idlewild Airport, a revolutionary new structure that for the first time ever, could allow passengers to board without worrying about the rain. The structure- nicknamed 'The Worldport' is known for it's distinct 'flying saucer' shape. This building will be extended, renovated countless times. It will see the rise and fall of the Boeing 707 luxury liner. It will be the birthplace of the Boeing 747 jumbo jet- the most successful airliner in history.
In 1991, the last Pan Am flight lands marking the end of an era, but leaving some treasures- such as the Worldport.
Delta Air Lines purchases the building and moves all of it's operations there for 22 years, until Terminal 4 is opened. The building is slated for permanent closure 50 years after it was opened- on May 23.
I took a flight today, specifically to revisit this treasure- and to prove to all the pro-demolition activists that this building is indeed worth saving. The building has undergone severe deterioration-specifically right before the plans to demolish it were finalized, Delta claims this is a havoc for passengers. However, I saw something different, and I hope you can see that too.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy this journey through time.
Please visit savetheworldport.org to learn what you can do to help save even a portion of this modern ruin.

The Rise And Fall Of Pan Am
Pan Am was once the largest international airline in the US. In 1970 alone, it carried 11 million passengers to 86 countries worldwide. Pan Am is credited as the innovator of countless features of air travel, including cabin service, radio communications, onboard safety, air traffic control, and aviation weather forecasting. But after 60 years of flight, decades of financial turbulence, and a devastating terrorist attack above the skies of Lockerbie, Scotland, Pan Am went bust.

Come Fly With Me: The Story of Pan Am (2011, BBC Documentary)
This BBC documentary tells the story of how Pan American World Airways kickstarted the jet-age and shrank the globe. Real-life 'Pan Am girls' recall a high-life of luxury and glamour; rubbing shoulders with celebrity passengers, international romances and having to wear the now infamous girdle. Stars of the jet-age such as Robert Vaughn and Mary Quant remember the food, fashion and girls that made them regular Pan Am passengers.
Pan Am's success was largely due to its visionary founder Juan Trippe, who transformed a small mail carrier in to a global airline, pioneered flights for the masses and helped create the Boeing 747 jumbo jet.
Honor Blackman narrates the story of how Pan Am conquered the skies and left a legacy of affordable travel and a much smaller world.

What If Pan Am Was Still Operating Today?
Over its 64 year history, Pan Am built up an extensive medium- and long-haul international network, operating the newest aircraft with a well-trained crew and excellent onboard service. Had it not met its end in 1991, how would the airline look today?

Pan Am's Last Commercial: "#1 Airline to Europe" (early-1991)
This was the last commercial of Pan American World Airways. It was aired in the early part of 1991 when the airline filed for bankruptcy and before key routes and assets were sold and liquidated. By the end of 1991, the airline was a shell of its former self having sold off all of the coveted European routes during the summer and fall and Pan Am ceased operations completely on December 4, 1991, marking an end of an era in aviation.

Pan American World Airways Flight 103 - Original Sound
Pan Am Flight 103 was a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit via a stopover in London and another in New York City. The transatlantic leg of the route was operated by Clipper Maid of the Seas, a Boeing 747-121 registered N739PA. Shortly after 19:00 on 21 December 1988, while the aircraft was in flight over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, it was destroyed by a bomb that had been planted on board, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew in what became known as the Lockerbie bombing.

This is one of the best Pan Am documentaries made in recent times and features many rare interviews of Pan Am legends, including founder Juan Trippe's assistant, Kathleen Clair and Hollywood legend Maureen O'Hara.
Produced for the BBC by Pier Productions. Written and directed by Stephen Lennhoff.
Unfortunately, Ms. O'Hara passed away in 2015, Ms. Clair passed away in 2019, and Ms. Blackman passed away in 2020.

If movies like Back from the future teach us one thing, it's that time travel is certainly an exciting concept. I mean, who wouldn't like to have a chance to take a break from the present to venture into the future to see how everything turns out.
Which brings us to the question- is time travel possible? Passengers on the mysterious Pan Am plane had a chance to answer that question when the plane landed 37 years after taking off.
The case of Pan Am Flight 914 has driven historians and skeptics crazy for years.
It all started on July 2, 1955, when Pan Am Flight 914 was scheduled to take off from its airport in New York. It was a normal day, with clear skies and everything needed for a successful flight. As far as everyone involved knew, it was going to be a routine trip to Miami, but boy, were they wrong.
Just a few minutes after take-off, something mysterious happened that changed their lives and history as we know it, forever. Pan Am Flight 914 vanished. Yep, you heard that right.

Another form of commercial advertisement are airline issued postcards. Here from my collection are over 80 advertising postcards for Pan Am accompanying one of their famous jingles.
The song is
Title: “We Fly the World the Way the World Wants to Fly”
Agency: N.W. Ayer, New York
Written By: Jake Holmes
Sung by: Jake Holmes
Year: 1979
Lyrics:
Every day the world awakens.
People dream of what awaits them.
Getting ready to go on out and
find their world.
Every day we fly we show ’em
the experience of knowin’
what the world wants when they want to fly
the world…
Pan Am. We fly the world
the way the world wants to fly.
Pan Am. We fly the world
the way the world wants to fly.
Instrumental bridge.
Pan Am. We fly the world
the way the world wants to fly.
Pan Am. We fly the world
the way the world wants to fly.
Been around. We know the way.
Pioneers, even today.
For every person who wants to go and
find the world.
There’s a world that we can show you.
Through the years we’ve got to know you.
We know what you want when you want to fly
the world…

Pan Am Flight 103 was a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit via a stopover in London and another in New York City. The transatlantic leg of the route was operated by Clipper Maid of the Seas, a Boeing 747-121 registered N739PA. Shortly after 19:00 on 21 December 1988, while the aircraft was in flight over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, it was destroyed by a bomb that had been planted on board, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew in what became known as the Lockerbie bombing.

Terrorism is seen as a present-day epidemic, but the families of the 270 victims of Pan Am Flight 103 have lived with it for decades. Bound together by tragedy when a bomb ripped the New York-bound 747 jumbo jet into pieces over Lockerbie, Scotland just before Christmas in 1988, the Flight 103 families faced one traumatic injustice after another. From the early days when an unprepared U.S. government left the relatives to fend for themselves against a greedy, once-iconic airline, to the modern era, when the only man convicted of the crime was set free in a backdoor oil deal with Libya’s infamous dictator, M...

Pan Am Flight 103 was a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit via London and New York. On 21 December 1988, N739PA, the aircraft operating the transatlantic leg of the route, was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew in what became known as the Lockerbie bombing.
