History Summarized: Mycenaean Greece & the Bronze Age Collapse
I'm pronouncing Mycenaean & Mycenae with a hard "K" sound because that's how it sounds in Greek, and I would not be so impolite as to mispronounce the name of the first Greek-speaking civilization in history.
(The name of "Mycenae" can be spelled Μυκῆναι or Μυκήνη, and I'm using the first one: mee-KEE-neh)

History Summarized: the Ancient Greek Post-Apocalypse
Turns out the "Studio Ghibli Post-Apocalypse" aesthetic has a historical basis in ancient Greek history's Bronze Age Collapse, long Dark Age, and slow re-emergence into the Polis Age. I don't know if I'd call the process *pleasant*, but it sure as hell is a *vibe*.

Is there any truth to the stories told by Homer and others about them? Using footage from my recent exploration of a number of ancient Mycenaean sites as well as DNA, ancient history and archaeology, we explore the depths of this ancient and extraordinary people.

Mycenae, Greece: Ancient and Mysterious - Rick Steves’ Europe Travel Guide - Travel Bite
More info about travel to Mycenae: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/greece/mycenae Mycenae, a hilltop fortress on the Peloponnesian Peninsula, dominated the Greek world between 1600 and 1200 BC, a thousand years before Athens' golden age. A treasure trove of gold unearthed in the 19th century has lead archeologists to believe Mycenae is Homer's fabled city "rich in gold." #ricksteveseurope #greece #peloponnese

Hi everyone. Pete here. Not the standard History Time video here as I decided to focus on one relatively obscure location to tell the story of prehistoric Greece. As far as I'm aware this is the only documentary on this fascinating site on the Internet.
I am also working on a ridiculously long entire history of the Mycenaean world which should be finished at some point in the next year. Until then, hope you enjoy this one. Cheers and all the best!

MYCENEAN GREEK
Region: Southern Balkans/Crete
Era: 16th–12th century BC
Language family: Indo-European (Hellenic)
Mycenaean Greek is the most ancient attested form of the Greek language, on the Greek mainland and Crete in Mycenaean Greece (16th to 12th centuries BC), before the hypothesised Dorian invasion, often cited as the terminus ad quem for the introduction of the Greek language to Greece. The language is preserved in inscriptions in Linear B, a script first attested on Crete before the 14th century BC. Most inscriptions are on clay tablets found in Knossos, in central Crete, as well as in Pylos, in the southwest of the Peloponnese. Other tablets have been found at Mycenae itself, Tiryns and Thebes and at Chania, in Western Crete.[1] The language is named after Mycenae, one of the major centres of Mycenaean Greece.
The tablets long remained undeciphered, and many languages were suggested for them, until Michael Ventris deciphered the script in 1952.
The texts on the tablets are mostly lists and inventories. No prose narrative survives, much less myth or poetry. Still, much may be glimpsed from these records about the people who produced them and about Mycenaean Greece, the period before the so-called Greek Dark Ages.

The Homeric tales tell of Bronze Age Greeks known as the Mycenaeans. Who were they, where did they come from, and what relation do they have to modern Greeks? Is there any truth to the stories told by Homer and others about them? Using footage from my recent exploration of a number of ancient Mycenaean sites as well as DNA, ancient history and archaeology, we explore the depths of this ancient and extraordinary people.
