The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty—the years 1420 to 1912. It is located in the center of what is now known as Beijing, (formerly Peking) China, and now houses the Palace Museum. It served as the home of emperors and their households as well as the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government for almost 500 years.
Constructed from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 72ha (180 acres). The palace complex exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture, and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.
Since 1925, the Forbidden City has been under the charge of the Palace Museum, whose extensive collection of artwork and artefacts were built upon the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Part of the museum's former collection is now located in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Both museums descend from the same institution, but were split after the Chinese Civil War. With over 14 million annual visitors, the Palace Museum is the most visited Museum in the world.
The Palace Museum within the Forbidden City was first established in 1925, and finds itself located in the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The museum holds paintings, calligraphy, ceramics and antiquities of the imperial collections. In 1987, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The imperial palace is now a public museum where visitors can learn, among other things, about its past as a fortress protecting the ancient city. The imperial collections are becoming ever more accessible to the public thanks to their digitization. Everyone can ever more easily learn about China’s 5,000-year history, as well as the 600-year history of the Forbidden City itself.

A Fresh Eye on Beijing — The Palace Museum
Two of China’s most famous historic landmarks are joining forces as the Forbidden City hosts an exhibition featuring frescoes and artifacts from the legendary cave complexes in Dunhuang, Gansu. Located in Western China, the Dunhuang area is famous for its grottoes, where travelers, monks, scholars, and hermits left texts, paintings, and statues over several centuries. Lost to time, the caves were re-discovered at the turn of the 20th-century.
