🩺 Understanding the Pathophysiology of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) 🩸
🔬 What is PID?
PID is an infection that affects the uterus, fallopian tubes, and/or ovaries, leading to inflammation and potential scarring.
🦠 How does it happen?
🦠Initial Infection: PID often begins with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) like chlamydia or gonorrhea.
🦠Spread of Infection: The bacteria travel from the vagina or cervix up into the reproductive organs.
🦠Inflammation and Damage: The infection causes inflammation, which can lead to the formation of scar tissue and abscesses.
🦠Complications: If untreated, PID can cause chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.
💪✨Make sure to grab your free download: 77 Must Know NCLEX Topics: Click the link in our bio or visit: nursing.com/nfn
💡 Key Points:
💡 Risk Factors: Multiple sexual partners, unprotected sex, and a history of STIs increase the risk of developing PID.
💡 Symptoms: Pain in the lower abdomen, fever, unusual discharge with a foul odor, painful intercourse, and irregular menstrual bleeding.
💡 Diagnosis and Treatment: Diagnosis is through pelvic exams, ultrasound, and testing for STIs. Treatment involves antibiotics, and in severe cases, surgery may be needed.

PID is an infection caused by bacteria. When bacteria from the vagina or cervix travel to your womb, fallopian tubes, or ovaries, they can cause an infection.
Bacteria normally found in the cervix can also travel into the uterus and fallopian tubes during a medical procedure such as:
Childbirth
Endometrial biopsy (removing a small piece of your womb lining to test for cancer)
Getting an intrauterine device (IUD)
Miscarriage
Abortion
