Oxted Line Signal Boxes (mainly late 1960s - mid 1970s)
Oxted Line Signal Boxes (mainly late 1960s - mid 1970s) from Sanderstead down to East Grinstead and to Barcombe Mills. Not all are covered equally but just as I happened to visit. Obviously my old home of Lingfield features highly and I was also rather fond of the peaceful surroundings of Birchden Junction. The ground frame diagrams shown from Lingfield are from the early 1950s. The South one shows when the Down Loop was in situ, which was used for receiving Race Trains until the mid 1960s (not sure of exact date). The North Ground Frame diagram dates from a time when the loading dock in the goods yard was also used for departing Race Trains. It shows starting signals and the appropriate facing point lock for passenger use, together with a protecting catch point within the yard and a ...

Visiting Every Station - Uckfield Branch
It's time to visit some more stations, not just by passing through them but actually getting on or off the train at them. So I headed down to the line out to Oxted, and down the Uckfield branch where there were six stations that I needed to cross off my list.
I discovered incorrect railway fonts in the wrong colour, a mysterious railway carriage, new step-free access, a steam train, and a delightfully peaceful station to feel calm and at one with nature ...
I must also acknowledge that that was a railway crash on this line back in 1994. You can read more about that here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowden_rail_crash

Trains over Riddlesdown Viaduct (Croydon). Oxted Line
Riddlesdown Viaduct is on the East Croydon --Oxted line, between Riddlesdown and Upper Warlingham stations. It's built over an old Chalk Quarry.
The wooden stairs leading further upwards from the railway line are called Jacobs Ladder.
The location is virtually impossible to find. For the determined it's reached from the A22 using a footpath signposted as "Path 29 steep". The very small footpath is adjacent to Jewsons and opposite Old Barn Lane, Kenley. It's about 3 feet wide and gets very muddy.

Hurst Green to Ashurst on the Oxted Line, 1969 - 1990
Hurst Green Junction, Edenbridge Town, Hever, Cowden and Ashurst stations photographed from 1969 to 1990, when this part of the line to Uckfield was still double tracked throughout. CORRECTIONS: The pic. of 1306 at Hurst Green (4/10/1969) is on the 10.54 ex Oxted (not ex Uckfield - the caption got transposed!) and that where it reads gas lamps at Ashurst it should be oil lamps.

The First #PurpleTrain From Reading
TfL had annouced that the TfL Rail service would start on Sunday December 15th with trains between Reading and Paddington, until we heard that there would be a small number of day starting a few weeks earlier to help get everyone involved prepared ...
TfL Rail is what TfL are calling their Crossrail services before they become the Elizabeth Line, but here we shall always love to call it the #PurpleTrain
Thanks to Dan Spence for his photos and additional footage, he also has a short video of his morning here: https://youtu.be/MnRCfz0hkH4
