The Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones
The complete and unabridged full-color edition
First published in 1856, The Grammar of Ornament remains a design classic. Its inspiration came from pioneering British architect and designer Owen Jones (1809–1874), who produced a comprehensive design treatise for the machine age, lavishly illustrated in vivid chromolithographic color. Jones made detailed observations of decorative arts on his travels in Europe, the Middle East, and in his native London, where he studied objects on display at the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in 1851 and at local museums. His aim was to improve the quality of Western design by changing the habits of Victorian designers, who indiscriminately mixed elements from a wide variety of sources.

His aim was to improve the quality of Western design by changing the habits of Victorian designers, who indiscriminately mixed elements from a wide variety of sources.
Jones’s resulting study is a comprehensive analysis of styles of ornamental design, presenting key examples ranging from Maori tattoos, Egyptian columns, and Greek borders to Byzantine mosaic, Indian embroidery, and Elizabethan carvings. At once splendidly Victorian and insistently modern, The Grammar of Ornament celebrates objects of beauty from across time periods and continents, and remains an indispensable sourcebook today.
Owen Jones (1809–74) was an English-born Welsh architect and one of the most important design theorists of the nineteenth century. He taught applied arts at the South Kensington School of Design in the 1850s and served as Superintendent of Works at the Great Exhibition of 1851. He was a key figure in the founding of the South Kensington Museum, which later became the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The purpose of such a work was to gather the 'best' examples of decoration in an attempt to encourage designers to follow his lead in examining the underlying principles contained within the broad history of ornament and colors. Grammar was influential in design schools in the latter half of the nineteenth century and is still in print today.
About the artist:
Trained as an architect, designer, and design theorist, Owen Jones was one of the most influential English tastemakers of the Victorian era. His pioneering studies on color theory, geometry, and form still inspire designers to this day

Owen Jones meets Joey Barton: 'Homophobia in football shows the problems the UK faces'
I met Joey Barton at the Cheltenham Literary Festival, where he told me that the lack of openly gay footballers shows that the UK is not as progressive as it thinks. He believes that eventually homophobic abuse in the sport will come to be seen as unacceptable in the same manner as racism on the terraces.
We also chatted about his opinions on politics, his history of violence, his interest in philosophy and why the penal system in the UK needs reforming.

Owen Jones meets Keir Starmer | 'Brexit is an opportunity for sensible immigration rules'
Labour is in a tough position when it comes to Brexit. In its heartlands in the north, the party's traditional supporters voted to leave the European Union but in its urban strongholds they voted heavily to remain. Keir Starmer, the shadow Brexit secretary, is in the unenviable position of balancing those two opposing demands.

Owen Jones goes to Jeremy Corbyn's activist training
It's easy for politicians (and journalists before you point that out in the comments) to get stuck in the Westminster bubble and to become removed from the people they're meant to represent. Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour party have been running community organising events around the country to build up an army of activists and voters. I took a trip to the event in Mansfield find out why so many people were giving up an afternoon in August to be there.

I met with him to talk about the final years of New Labour, discussing his reputation as an aggressive, Machiavellian schemer, his suspicions that Gordon Brown may have been involved in an attempted coup against Tony Blair and the fallout from the disastrous Iraq war.
We also discussed whether the years of stress working at the top of the political pile had contributed to Campbell's long-term suffering with mental health problems, including depression. He reveals his often violent dreams, including one involving Tony Blair, Gordon Bro...

As the football Super League collapses, footballing icon Jamie Carragher told me why the fan revolt was so massive, whether this fight will have to be had all over again, whether football can be separated from the profit-driven economic system we all live under, about how young and working-class fans are priced out of football - and how this successful struggle can encourage others to fight for justice against rich vested interests.

Nick Clegg, the former deputy prime minister and ardent remainer, tells me he emailed David Cameron to tell him he was running a ‘bloodless’ campaign as the European Union referendum came to a climax. But, Clegg says, Cameron rejected his advice to deliver a more emotional message to combat the powerful Brexit slogan of ‘take back control’. The former leader of the Liberal Democrats went on to express his disbelief at Theresa May’s ‘hard Brexit’ strategy.
We also discussed his record in coalition government alongside the Conservative party led by David Cameron, the anger at the perceived betrayal over tuition fees, the bedroom tax and the raising of the income tax threshold.

I went to his constituency of Camden in north London to find out about the party's Brexit negotiation plans and ask why Theresa May seems hellbent on giving the impression she'll leave the European Union with no deal.

He reveals his often violent dreams, including one involving Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and an axe.
In terms of today's politics Campbell told me about his surprise at Jeremy Corbyn's campaign for the 2017 general election, though he says he's yet to 'drink the Kool-Aid' when it comes to Labour's vision for Britain's future. He's especially critical on Brexit, where he believes Corbyn and John McDonnell should be doing more to stop Theresa May's rightwing Conservatives driving us off a 'cliff-edge'.

Bankers? Tax dodgers? Actually it’s property developers. If they continue in this way argues Owen Jones, soon housing will become a luxury asset for a few to make billions while ordinary citizens are priced out of their homes.
