The film was based on Canadian writer and publisher Gladys Taylor's 1984 book Alone in the Australian Outback, a memoir of her 1977 driving trip in Australia.
Plot
Alma can't stand to have one more birthday without seeing her estranged daughter, Elizabeth, who lives in Sydney, Australia. But Alma doesn't fit into her daughter's political-hostess life even for a visit, and she finds more sympathy in her granddaughter. Alma, in a burst of rebellion, buys a supercharged hotrod and sets out on a voyage of self-discovery to Melbourne. Along the way, she meets con artists, gangsters, and a ponytailed white-knight in a camper and she finds not only adventure and romance, but also the courage to go back and face her relationship with her daughter and set it right.
The second series was confirmed to be in production in early 2008. This series takes place in 1982, and is the fourth British series overall in the Life On Mars franchise.
Series 3 (2010)
Series 3 consists of eight 60-minute episodes. The first episode of the series aired on 2 April 2010. Episodes 7 and 8 were joined as the show's first "two-parter" (i.e. the two episodes form one direct narrative) and was advertised as such.
Over the Hill to the Poorhouse, also known as Over the Hill, is a 1920 American silent film about a woman who has a lot of children, and who never gets the chance to enjoy life. The film starred actress Mary Carr and almost all of her real-life children.
The film was directed by Harry Millarde, released by Fox Film Corporation, and was a box office success in 1920. The film was remade as Over the Hill (1931), starring Mae Marsh and as Tears of a Mother (1937). The 1920 silent film is preserved at Bois d'Arcy in France.

"Over the Hill to the Poorhouse"
This song from 1874 has special significance today, in view of the bleak economic forecast. The Old Man in the Woods sings it in his old farmhouse, recalling various times in his travels when one-time "poorhouses" were pointed out to him.

I've tried and tried to run and hide To find a life that's new But wherever I go I always know I can't escape from you A jug of wine to numb my mind But what good does it do? The jug runs dry and still I cry I can't escape from you These wasted years are souvenirs Of love I thought was true Your memory is chained to me I can't escape from you There is no end, I can't pretend That dreams will soon come true A slave too long to a heart of stone I can't escape from you
