Robert James Byrd (July 1, 1930 – July 27, 1990), known by the stage name Bobby Day, was an American rock and roll and R&Bmusician.
Biography
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Day moved to Los Angeles, California, at the age of 15. As a member of the R&B group, The Hollywood Flames, he used the stage name Bobby Day to perform and record. He went several years with minor musical success limited to the West Coast, including being the original "Bob" in the duo Bob & Earl. In 1957, Day formed his own band called the "Satellites" following which he recorded three songs that are seen today as rock and roll classics.
Despite the similarity in personal and group names, this is not the Bobby Byrd that sang with, and was the founder of The Famous Flames, the vocal group whom with James Brown first began his career.
"Over and Over" is a song written by Robert James Byrd and recorded by him using the stage name Bobby Day. Day's version entered the Billboard Top 100 in 1958, the same week a version of the same song by Thurston Harris entered the chart. Day's version reached #41, and was the B-side to Rockin' Robin. Thurston Harris' version peaked at #96. In the song, the singer describes going to a party with misgivings of having a good time, until he sees a pretty girl. The singer attempts to ask her out, but she is waiting for her date to arrive. He vows to try "over and over".
Dave Clark Five version
In 1965, the most successful version, was recorded by the Dave Clark Five, one of the early British Invasion bands of the mid-1960s. This version was sung by lead singer and keyboardistMike Smith. It followed the group's signature sound of thumping, 4/4 drum beats accompanied by a wailing saxophone. It omits the final verse of the song. In the US, "Over and Over" was the group's 12th Top 40 hit and was their only #1 hit. It was also the last #1 hit of 1965. Despite its success in the USA and the popularity of the group on both sides of the Atlantic, the single only reached number 45 in the band's native United Kingdom.
5 Seconds of Summer (commonly abbreviated as 5SOS) are an Australian rock band from Sydney that formed in 2011. The group were originally YouTube celebrities, posting videos of themselves covering songs from various artists during 2011 and early 2012. They rose to international fame while touring with One Direction on the Take Me Home Tour.
The group have been referred to as a boy band in the media, though the members reject this description. In early 2014, the band released "She Looks So Perfect" worldwide as its debut single, which topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The self-titled debut studio album was released in June 2014, which peaked #1 in 11 countries, and followed by a live album titled LiveSOS. The band released their second album Sounds Good Feels Good in 2015.
History
2011–12: Origin and debut
5 Seconds of Summer began in 2011 when Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood, who all attended Norwest Christian College, started posting videos of themselves performing covers of popular songs together on Hemmings' YouTube channel. Hemmings' first video, a cover of Mike Posner's "Please Don't Go", was posted on 3 February 2011. Their cover of Chris Brown's "Next to You" received over 600,000 hits. In December 2011, they were joined by drummer Ashton Irwin, and the four-man line up was completed.
"Over and Over" was the first single from Hot Chip's second album The Warning. It was released twice in the UK in 2006 - first reaching number 32 in March and number 27 in October.
Music video
The music video, directed by Nima Nourizadeh, features the band members in what appears to be a heavily special effects-laden production, effects which are rarely seen in the video, instead having the band members performing in a stylized green screen stage, with several bored-looking assistants in green bodysuits holding props (at one point, in an attempt to recreate a bicycle ride, moving trees around to create an illusion of movement). The video was preloaded on all first generation Zune 30 devices.
Artwork
The cover art, designed by Wallzo and Owen Clarke, uses the same pattern present in many of the other releases from The Warning.
Release and reception
The track first appeared in December 2004 on a studio mix by Radio Soulwax. The mix was broadcast in Australia, the UK (as the Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1), and in Belgium (as Hang The Year 2004 on Studio Brussel). The US release of "Over and Over" occurred on 29 November 2005 on DFA/Astralwerks. The B side, "Just Like We (Breakdown) [DFA Remix]", did not chart. The song was released in the UK for the first time on 27 February 2006 on EMI and was re-released in the UK on 9 October 2006.

However, Day is most remembered for his 1958 solo recording of the Billboard Hot 100 No. 2 hit, "Rockin' Robin", written by Leon Rene under the pseudonym Jimmie Thomas. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold record. "Rockin' Robin" was a song covered by Bob Luman at Town Hall Party on October 28, 1958, The Hollies in 1964, Gene Vincent in 1969, Michael Jackson in 1972, and by McFly in 2006.
In 2012-2013, his uncharted recording, "Beep-Beep-Beep", was the musical soundtrack for a US-nationwide Kia Sorento television commercial.
Sometimes referred to as a one-hit wonder, despite numerous recordings with a variety of record labels, Day never achieved another Top 40 hit apart from "Rockin' Robin".
Day died of prostate cancer in July 27th 1990, and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
