Tracey Anne Thorn (born 26 September 1962) is an English singer, songwriter and writer. She is best known as being one half of the duo Everything but the Girl.
Personal life
The youngest of three children, Thorn was born in Brookmans Park, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. She grew up in Hatfield and studied English at the University of Hull, where she graduated in 1984 with First Class Honours. She later took an MA degree at Birkbeck College, University of London.
After 27 years as a couple, Thorn and Ben Watt married in 2008 at ChelseaRegister Office. They live in Hampstead, North London. The couple have twin daughters born in 1998, and a son born in 2001.
Music career
Stern Bops (1979–1980)
Thorn began her musical career in the punk-pop hybrid group Stern Bops playing guitar and providing some vocal backing.
Marine Girls (1980–83)
Thorn then formed Marine Girls as primary songwriter, playing guitar and sharing vocals. The band released two albums (Beach Party in 1981 and Lazy Ways in 1983) and three singles. The group disbanded in 1983.
Out of the Woods marked Thorn's full-time return to the music scene after an absence of over six years. It was released on 20 March 2007 in the U.S. on Astralwerks.
Thorn told Billboard magazine about the recording of the album:
Track list
"Smoke and Mirrors" (B-side cover on "Raise the Roof")
"Out of the Woods" is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. The song was written by Swift and Jack Antonoff of fun. It was the second song to be officially released from her fifth studio album1989, serving as the first promotional single on October 14, 2014. It is the fourth track on the album, after "Style". "Out of the Woods" serves as the sixth and final official single with an accompanying music video that premiered on December 31, 2015, during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve on ABC. It was released to radio on February 5, 2016. The song went number one in Israel and has reached the top ten in Canada and New Zealand as well as the top twenty in Australia, Belgium, and the United States.
Background and release
Swift premiered a 15-second clip of "Out of the Woods" on Good Morning America on October 13, 2014. Swift called "Out of the Woods" one of her "favorite songs on this album because it best represents 1989." She explained that the song is about "the fragility and breakable nature of some relationships. This was a relationship where I was kind of living day-to-day wondering where it was going, if it was going to go anywhere, if it was going to end the next day." "Out of the Woods" was initially released as a promotional single on October 14, 2014, with no plans for a music video or an official release. On December 22, 2015, Good Morning America officially announced the release of a music video for the song to premiere during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. "Out of the Woods" also serves as the sixth official single from 1989, and it was released to radio stations on February 5, 2016.
Out of the Woods: Life and Death in Dirty Dave's Homeless Camp is a 2012 feature documentary film by Michael E. Arth. It follows the life and death struggles of homeless people living in a camp in the woods for four years. Arth single-handely directed, shot and edited Out of the Woods after meeting one of the subjects, Dean "Dino the Dinosaur" Bieber, in a former drug slum Arth had rebuilt and turned into "The Garden District" in DeLand some years before. The backstory of Out of the Woods is told in Arth's previous documentary, New Urban Cowboy: Toward a New Pedestrianism.
Production and Purpose
Arth who has a background in building design, urban planning and policy analysis, made the film to bring attention to his plan to built a holistic, community of services in Volusia County, FL for adults who fall through the cracks of society and need mental health care, substance abuse rehabilitation, or emergency housing. Since 2007, Arth had been trying to get Volusia County to donate 80 acres of land, already zoned for group homes. The site for Tiger Bay Village, as it is called, is on an existing bus stop next to an existing detox and rehabilitation center, Stewart Marchman/ACT/Pinegrove. Tiger Bay Village would be run as a non-profit and it would serve as a more efficient and compassionate alternative for those who would otherwise be incarcerated for substance abuse or mental health related issues.

Tracey Thorn | Music, Memories, and the Blue Moon Rose | Edinburgh International Book Festival
Everything But the Girl recorded their last album in 1999 and more than twenty years on, they’ve retained a loyal fanbase around the world. The band’s singer and songwriter Tracey Thorn has also turned her hand to writing in recent years, producing several excellent memoirs full of the kind of down-to-earth honesty that was also a characteristic of her songs. In her latest book, 'My Rock 'n' Roll Friend', Thorn pays tribute to a 40-year friendship with Lindy Morrison, drummer in the Australian art-rock band The Go Betweens.
Ten years her senior and much more outgoing, Morrison did not initially strike Thorn as a potential friend, but the book charts their increasing realisation that they were both women in a pop world dominated by men. It is a friendship which would eventually lead to Th...

Ten years her senior and much more outgoing, Morrison did not initially strike Thorn as a potential friend, but the book charts their increasing realisation that they were both women in a pop world dominated by men. It is a friendship which would eventually lead to Thorn writing a song about Morrison called ‘Blue Moon Rose’. As well as a portrait of a brilliant musician, Thorn paints a picture of sexism and hypocrisy in the music industry. In this event, Thorn discusses her affectionate memoir and the misogynistic conditions in which the friendship thrived with writer and broadcaster Sam Baker.
