Bristol | Border Town on Two States, Tennessee and Virginia, Classic Small Town America Destination
One of the amazing things we find in our journeys is the different variety of towns. One town in particular is the subject of today's vlog. Driving into this town at first it appears to be just like all the other small towns in America. Upon further inspection you'll notice that there is what appears to be some sort of distortion that makes you second-guess what you're seeing. Flags of Virginia and Tennessee flying high as you drive down State Street.
This town straddles both states, Tennessee and Virginia. But there's more to it than that. This big, small town in America is the birthplace of country music.
You can find fun things to do like visiting the Bristol Motor Speedway Ice Rink to get your ice skates wet. Yes, I said "Motor Speedway." NASCARs legendary short track.

But twins don't always mean "double the pleasure". Discover the good, the bad, and the beautiful of Bristol TN / VA in this week's video.

Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia - 4K Drive
An afternoon drive through Bristol Tennessee/Virginia.
"Bristol is a city in Sullivan County, Tennessee, United States. Its population was 26,702 at the 2010 census. It is the twin city of Bristol, Virginia, which lies directly across the state line between Tennessee and Virginia. The boundary between the two cities is also the state line, which runs along State Street in their common downtown district. Bristol is a principal city of the Kingsport−Bristol−Bristol, TN-VA metropolitan statistical area, which is a component of the Johnson City−Kingsport−Bristol, TN-VA combined statistical area − commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.
Bristol is probably best known for being the site of some of the first commercial recordings of country music, showcasing Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Fam...

If you want to get some of the great outdoors, you can explore the Bristol Caverns, or go in the opposite direction and visit the Weir Damn or South Holston Dam.
Having been restored by the Bristol Train Station Foundation, the train station is a great place to meet or hold a small event before or after you go exploring downtown Bristol.
Just don't get confused as you enter downtown. If you cross the street, you might change states. With Virginia on the North side, and Tennessee on the south side, this town shows it's pride in sharing both states.
As for us, we just enjoyed exploring the area. Downtown was a blast. The people were friendly and the food was delicious. The surrounding area had plenty to do for the whole family. And we loved every minute we had visiting the mountainous region. If you get a chance to visit, make sure you take plenty of picture too. Until then, we will see you on the road. Squeeze the Day!!

Join me in Bristol, the only city in the USA whose downtown is split exactly down the middle between two states. Bristol TN and Bristol VA are considered "twin cities" which occur when two urban centers are built so close together that they grow into each other over time.

Bristol is probably best known for being the site of some of the first commercial recordings of country music, showcasing Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, and later a favorite venue of mountain musician Uncle Charlie Osborne. The U.S. Congress recognized Bristol as the "Birthplace of Country Music" in 1998, and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum is located in Bristol. It also is the birthplace of Tennessee Ernie Ford.
Bristol is also the site of Bristol Motor Speedway, a NASCAR short track that is one of the best-known motorsports facilities in the country." Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol,_Tennessee

Sketching A Victorian Era Bristol Street From A Historic 1866 Photograph | Studio Vlog
Visit my Etsy shop to see the finished print: https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/DrawingsFromAnna
While wandering through Pinterest the other day, I stumbled across an old photograph from 1866 taken at the junction of Steep Street and Trenchart Street in Bristol, England. I loved the look of the gritty old buildings and the general composition of the photograph so much that I decided to try and recreate it through watercolour and ink! I also thought it would be a good challenge for me to try and paint something using a limited palette of basically grey, black and brown, and thus a new addition to my sketch book has been born!
Like I mentioned in the video, I'm SO happy with how this turned out that I decided to turn it into a print for my Etsy shop - so if you're at all interested, please take...

The Edwardian Inventions That Turned Normal Homes Into Death Traps | Hidden Killers | Timeline
The dawn of the 20th century and the reign of a new King ushered in an era of fresh inventions and innovations that transformed the way we lived. Electricity, refrigeration and a whole host of different materials promised to make life at home brighter, easier and more convenient. But a lack of understanding of the potential hazards meant that they frequently led to terrible accidents, horrendous injuries - and even death.
Dr Suzannah Lipscomb takes us back to an age when asbestos socks and radio-active toothpaste were welcomed into British homes. She reveals how their lethal qualities were discovered and why some of us are still living with the consequences of our Edwardian forbears' enthusiasm for untried and untested products.

Chumbawamba - In Memoriam: Margaret Thatcher - So Long So Long (Live in Bristol)
Kept in reserve until the day Mrs.Thatcher moved on, 'So Long So Long' performed by Chumbawamba in May 2009 sums up the feelings of many people in the UK.
For me, as soon as I heard about it on April 8th 2013, there was a mad dash to find the tapes and audio from the archive, digitise and ingest them and then edit the track in a few hours, all in order to get it up before midnight on the same day.

This trip was to Bristol, PA where we found "America's Oldest Continuously Operating Inn". This place pre-dates the Revolutionary War and George Washington stayed here at the age of 25 on his way to Virginia. Such a cool place for history buffs to soak in, and the food's good too!

After 1834, the town became very important to the development of the American Industrial Revolution as the terminus city of the Delaware Canal providing greater Philadelphia with the days High Tech Anthracite fuels from the Lehigh Canal via Easton. The canal and a short trip on the Delaware also gave the town access to the mineral resources available in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York via each of the Morris Canal, the Delaware and Hudson Canal, and the Delaware and Raritan Canal, and connected the community to those markets and trade from New York City. These were among the factors spurring development of Bristol and nearby towns, explaining in part the industries which developed in the region.
Although its charter was revised in 1905, the original charter remains in effect, making Bristol Borough the third oldest borough in Pennsylvania after Chester and Germantown. Bristol Borough had 7,104 residents in 1900; 9,256 in 1910; 10,273 in 1920; and 11,895 in 1940. The most recent census has the population at 9,726 2010 census. The current mayor is Joseph A. Saxton. Bristol Borough is served by SEPTA's Trenton Line.

This trip was to Bristol, PA where we found "America's Oldest Continuously Operating Inn". This place pre-dates the Revolutionary War and George Washington stayed here at the age of 25 on his way to Virginia. Such a cool place for history buffs to soak in, and the food's good too!
