Osoyoos (/ɒˈsuːjuːs/o-SOO-ews, historically /ˈsuːjuːs/SOO-ews) is a town in the southern part of the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia near the border with Washington state, between Penticton and Omak. The town is also adjacent to the Indian Reserve of the Osoyoos Indian Band. The origin of the name Osoyoos was the word sẁiẁs (pronounced "soo-yoos") meaning "narrowing of the waters" in the local Okanagan language (Syilx'tsn). The "O-" prefix is not indigenous in origin and was attached by settler-promoters wanting to harmonize the name with other O-names in the Okanagan Country (Oliver, Omak, Oroville, Okanogan). There is one local newspaper, the Osoyoos Times.
The town’s population of 4,845 swells in the summer months with visitors from elsewhere in British Columbia and neighboring Alberta, as well as elsewhere in Canada. Also, a newer contingent of international visitors is supported by proximity to the Kelowna and Penticton Airports. A growing year-round retiree population is evidenced by the predominance in the population of people over 50 years old and with the recent boom of condominium and suburban development (though somewhat thwarted by the 2008–09 economic downturn). Another 1,892 people surround the town within the "Okanagan-Similkameen A" area.
British Columbia, also commonly referred to by its initials BC, is a province located on the west coast of Canada. British Columbia is also a component of the Pacific Northwest and the Cascadia bioregion, along with the US states of Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Alaska The province's name was chosen in 1858 by members of the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1871, it became the sixth province of Canada. Its Latin motto is Splendor sine occasu ("Splendour without Diminishment").
British Columbia wine is Canadian wine produced in the province of British Columbia. Wines made from 100 percent British Columbia grapes can qualify for classification under one of British Columbia's two classification systems, depending on the varietal, the wine-making techniques employed, and various other restrictions.
Originally, the British Columbia Wine Institute handled regulation and marketing of the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA), which is also an appellation system. More recently, the British Columbia Wine Authority was formed by the provincial government to regulate part of the industry. It created a second classification, "Wines of Distinction", to be also from 100 percent British Columbia grapes, but with less stringent quality control. In practice, it has strengthened the VQA classification.
British Columbia is gaining recognition for its world-class premium VQA wines. Wines which are neither labelled VQA or Wine of Distinction, and from certain producers (given special rights under the 1988 Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement), can use foreign bulk wine to produce a third category of wine which is labelled as Cellared in Canada. Significant parts of the wine industry, and respected wine writers in Canada and abroad, are quite concerned about this practice.
British Columbia (Superintendent of Motor Vehicles) v British Columbia (Council of Human Rights)
British Columbia (Superintendent of Motor Vehicles) v British Columbia (Council of Human Rights), [1999] 3 S.C.R. 868, known as the Grismer Estate case, is a leading Supreme Court of Canada decision on human rights law. The Court held that the British Columbia Superintendent of Motor Vehicles was in violation of the provincial Human Rights Code for cancelling the driver's licence of Terry Grismer because he had a visual disability.
Background
Terry Grismer was a mining truck driver who, after suffering from a stroke in 1984, suffered from homonymous hemianopia (H.H.), a visual disability that reduces the scope of peripheral vision. After the stroke the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles cancelled his driver's licence on the grounds that his condition made him incapable of meeting the minimum standard for peripheral vision required when driving. This rule applied to all people who suffered from H.H.

Osoyoos is home to Canada's only desert environment with some of the warmest annual temperatures in Canada with the lowest rainfall, the highest temperatures, and also the warmest freshwater lake. Having this warm sunny climate, the area around Osoyoos is one of the most productive fruit-growing orchards making the South Okanagan the fruit basket of Canada. Osoyoos is also absolutely scenic, from the rugged dry hills and surrounding mountains all the way to the rolling vineyards and sandy lakeshore. It was our first time in Okanagan and we didn’t even know that we have places like this in British Columbia!
The first place to go to in Osoyoos was the Spotted Lake, containing one of the world’s highest concentrations of various minerals with therapeutic waters to alleviate aches and pains. During summer the water evaporates and crystallizes, making the spots visible revealing colorful mineral deposits. The lake is on private land and is therefore not accessible by the public, but we got a good view of it from the highway.
One of the must visit places in Osoyoos is the Osoyoos Desert Centre which is a 67 acre facility that preserves the desert ecology. Good thing it was too hot to be outside for the wild desert animals to come say hi to us too. And we think we were the only ones crazy enough to walk around Canada’s desert during British Columbia’s record breaking heatwave! Mind you it was 40+ degrees Celsius every single day throughout that week. Just goes to show that nothing can stop us if exploring new places is on the table. Osoyoos is very dry and arguably the hottest place in Canada!

Town of Osoyoos, Osoyoos Lake, Gyro Beach, USA/ Canada Border, Fruit stands, Desert Centre, Winery and Spotted Lake in this video.
We start our South Okanagan adventure in Osoyoos, British Columbia, Canada. Our first stop is Gyro beach on Osoyoos Lake. This is said to be Canada's warmest lake in Canada's warmest town. We then transport to the USA/ Canada border. From there we take you to a typical fruit-stand on the area, full of peaches, apples and berries. Our hottest stop was at the Desert Centre. Did you know that this region is Canada's only desert? We walked the boardwalk and learned all about desert ecology. Then it was wine time. We chose a small family run winery. Blue Sky was a fun stop with great wine and fantastic personal service. Our last stop is a Spotted Lake. This is a mineral lake and is part of the aboriginal heritage for it's healing properties .

British Columbia's sea to sky corridor runs from the outskirts of the city of Vancouver to the beautiful snowcapped peaks of Whistler and beyond. It’s a haven for ultimate athletes to go white water kayaking and bungee jumping and there is a legacy of rich natural resources. Some of the earliest towns in British Columbia are located here because of mining, and what was the beginning of a transportation infrastructure that has laid the groundwork for Canada as we know.

We went to the HOTTEST place and the ONLY desert in Canada. Osoyoos is a small town located in the Okanagan Valley, south of Kelowna the biggest city in the region. There’s plenty of fun things to do in Osoyoos, whether you're feeling adventurous or prefer to relax and enjoy Canada’s driest climate. Book a tour of the Osoyoos Desert Centre: https://bit.ly/3F8UOnh
To kickstart our Okanagan Series, we started our adventure by driving 5 hours from Vancouver British Columbia to Osoyoos situated just above the USA border.

British Columbia is huge! In fact, outside of Alaska, it is larger than any other U.S. state. But despite its physical size, the majority of the Canadian province's population exists within the far southwest corner, mostly within the Vancouver metro area and the province's capital Victoria. This is despite the fact that the province is home to a surprisingly varied geography, including the sunnier, dryer region around Kelowna. So why is the vast majority of British Columbia so empty?

She says she's going back home. Hasn't seen her friends in a while. Plus British Columbia's real nice this time of year. And when she gets there she says that she'll phone. May take a day or so. It always takes longer than you think it will to settle in. And she says: So if I leave on that plane, remember me by our good days. And you don't have to but I'm going to wait. There's something wrong with the dog. She can't stop eating on herself. And the scabs that are under her fur, mean that I've been away too long. And I should really give her away to a good heart, in a better place. I'm going to miss you when you go. You'll do better than this home. Someone to take you on walks, show you off. Before it's too late. At best you'll be blind and gray. A warm climate for your last days. Should have never let her go, but you were always better alone.
