Philosophy of the Orphic Mysteries - The Derveni Papyrus - Myth of Orpheus and Ancient Greek Science
The Orphic Mysteries remain as obscure as they are fascinating. Indeed, they are responsible for the oldest surviving book manuscript in European history. Discovered in the charred remains of a funeral pyre, the Derveni Papyrus is an amazing combination of ancient Greek mystery religion and the scientific/philosophical revolutions of the 5th century BCE - here Orpheus meets Heraclitus and Anaxagoras.

The Secrets of the Orphic Mysteries
What were the Orphic mysteries? Orpheus was a mythical singer of Thracian origin. He beguiled animals and plants and inanimate nature with his enchanting music. He even tried to enchant Hades in order to retrieve retrieve his wife Eurydice from unending death in the underworld. As the possessor of secret knowledge from the land of the dead, Orpheus was the originator of mysteries which are largely similar to those of the Pythagoreans. In addition, Orpheus plays an important role in the Bacchic Dionysia as a prophet and founder of the cult.
Here, we look at Orpheus' myths as well as some of the early evidence for the Orphic mysteries: the bone plates at Olbia and the Lycurgeia by Aeschylus.

Orphism: Cult of Dionysus, Mystery Religion, Orphic Egg, Phanes, Esotericism, Cosmogony & Afterlife
Ever watch Jason and the Argonauts? Remember Orpheus, the musician? Just so happens that in Ancient Greece, there was an esoteric, mystery school bearing his name. When considering secret societies, and mystery rites, Orphism is at the nexus point, preceding that Pythagoreans, the Elysian Mysteries, and interestingly foreshadows Christianity within its lore.
We can answer many questions we’d never think to ask by studying Orphism. For instance, what did the ancient western world think of reincarnation? What is the Orphic egg? Why has history reoccurring used this symbol for different traditions? Who is Orpheus? Did he really exist?

ORPHISM - The Origins of The Greek Religion | Greek Mythology
Today's we're going to learn about the origins of the Greek religion Orphism. We'll talk about beginnings of this religious tradition. Its myths and significant figures, including the fabled musician and poet, Orpheus. Then, we examine its beliefs and the sacred rituals that set it apart from other Greek religious practices.
Orphisms roots can be traced back to the 6th century BCE, where it emerged as a unique form of religious beliefs and practices distinct from the dominant Olympian religion followed by the majority of the ancient Greeks. While the Olympian religion focused on the worship of gods like Zeus, Hera, and Apollo at grand temples and through public ceremonies, Orphism proposed a more personal, spiritual path. The birth of Orphism is shrouded in myth and legend, much like Or...

Secrets of Hermetic and Orphic Mysteries
Hermes Trismegistus, known as the thrice greatest Hermes, laid out the esoteric doctrines of ancient Egyptian priesthood, equated with the god Thoth. Hermes authored 42 sacred books, the Hermetic Mysteries, containing secret wisdom on priesthood education, temple rituals, astrology, and more. These texts influenced European alchemy, astrology, and magic. Orpheus, central to the Orphic Mysteries, transformed Dionysian rites and taught about Dionysus Zagreus, whose cycle of birth, death, and rebirth reflected the human soul's journey. Orphic practice focused on soul purification through reincarnation, aiming for redemption and release from the cycle of rebirth. Initiation included fasting, purification rites, and sacramental feasts, guiding initiates towards divine grace and spiritual enligh...

Orphic religion, a Hellenistic mystery religion, thought to have been based on the teachings and songs of the legendary Greek musician Orpheus. No coherent description of such a religion can be constructed from historical evidence. Most scholars agree that by the 5th century BC there was at least an Orphic movement, with travelling priests who offered teaching and initiation, based on a body of legend and doctrine said to have been founded by Orpheus.
Part of the Orphic ritual is thought to have involved the mimed or actual dismemberment of an individual representing the god Dionysus, who was then seen to be reborn. Orphic eschatology laid great stress on rewards and punishment after the death of the body, the soul then being freed to achieve its true life.
The enchanted worldview of Ancient Greeks offers an abundance of intriguing myths. Myths are vivid stories rich in symbolic meaning — their purpose is to help people understand the world around them, as well as the world within them. Some of these stories stand out as especially relevant, which is why they obtain cult status and become the organizing theme of religious festivals.
Moreover, there are instances where a myth appears to be so important it becomes a separate religion on its own. Such is the case with Orphism — the mystery religion allegedly founded by Orpheus, the legendary Greek poet.
As with most things concerning Orphism, its origin is veiled in mystery. Scholars can’t agree on the precise time frame during which this religion was founded. According to the earliest evidence pointing to Orphic practices, this religion has been around since at least the 6th century BC.
Some experts dispute the claim that Orphism was an organized religion. According to them, it only began as a local movement whose role was subsequently blown out of proportion by authors living long after its foundation.
However, ancient philosophers such as Socrates and Plato would disagree with this theory. For instance, in Plato’s dialogue named Cratylus, Socrates claims that Orphic poets deserve credit for ascribing names to things, and thus for creating the Greek language itself. This legend is only a part of a belief widely held by philosophers in ancient Greece. Namely, many wise men believed that Orphism was the core of the common Greek religion, and that it was the oldest religion in existence.
Orphism differs from the traditional Greek religion in many respects, so it’s no surprise that it provides a different account when it comes to the creation of the universe. The traditional Greek cosmology is outlined in “Theogony”, a seminal work by the Greek epic poet Hesiod. Although the Orphic worldview has some parallels with “Theogony”, it also introduces some elements apparently foreign to ancient Greek culture. This is what led many scholars to theorize that Orphism was imported, or at least influenced by the Egyptian and Near-Eastern cultures.
According to adherents of Orphism, the creator of the universe is Phanes — the primordial god whose name means “the light-bringer” or “the shining one”. This deity also comes with many other epithets, such as Protogonos (The First-begotten), and Erikepaios (The Powerful One). This creator god has also been equated with numerous other deities, such as Eros, Pan, and Zeus.
Phanes was hatched from The Cosmic Egg. His emergence caused the Egg to split into two halves, thus creating earth and the sky. After this, The First-begotten went on to create other deities.
The central myth of Orphism revolves around the death and resurrection of Dionysus Zagreus. Dionysus Zagreus was the son of Zeus and Persephone. He was the most beloved son of Zeus, which is why he intended him to become the successor of his throne at Olympus. When Hera found out about this, she was struck with jealousy because Zeus’ successor wasn’t one of her sons. In retribution, she plotted to kill Dionysus.
Phanes possessed a magic scepter that gave him power to rule the world. This scepter is a major part of the cosmological plot. Namely, he passed it to Nyx, who handed it down to Uranus, who in turn gave it to Cronos, only for him to forward it to his son Zeus.
Finally having the magic scepter in his hands, Zeus was possessed by lust for power. In his first power-ridden feat, he castrated his father Cronos by swallowing his genitals. However, he didn’t stop there, as he swallowed Phanes in order to gain powers over the elements and the creative life-force. Once he obtained all the power one could imagine, he endeavored to pass on his scepter to his son Dionysus. This leads us to the central myth of Orphism.
There are many accounts of the rebirth of Dionysus. According to the most popular legend, Zeus impregnated a mortal woman named Semele, which resulted in Dionysus being born for the second time.

The birth of Orphism is shrouded in myth and legend, much like Orpheus himself, who is said to be the founder of these mysteries. He was a figure of immense cultural significance, a legendary musician capable of charming beasts and even inanimate objects with his divine music. It's said that after his tragic attempt to retrieve his wife Eurydice (yer id a see) from the underworld, he became a proponent of a new set of spiritual beliefs.
Orphism imbued its followers with a worldview that was more introspective and focused on the soul's immortality and its journey after death. This was a dramatic shift from the communal and civic religion of the time, which centered primarily on sacrifices and rituals to appease the gods for worldly benefits. Orphists believed that the soul was divine and eternal, trapped within the human body, and that through living a pure life and partaking in specific rites, one could achieve liberation and return to a divine state. The significance of Orphism within the broader scope of Greek religious practices lay in its challenge to the status quo. Offering an alternative path to spirituality, it appealed to those seeking a more personal connection to the divine or those who perhaps questioned the conventional religious and societal norms. It was in many ways, a precursor to later philosophical schools of thought that would come to dominate Greek intellectual life.

Initiation included fasting, purification rites, and sacramental feasts, guiding initiates towards divine grace and spiritual enlightenment.
