Oromo people
The Oromo people (Oromo: Oromoo; Ge'ez: ኦሮሞ; ’Oromo) are an ethnic group inhabiting Ethiopia, northern Kenya, and parts of Somalia. With around 38 million members, they constitute the single largest ethnicity in Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa, at approximately 40% of Ethiopia's population according to the 2015 census. Oromos speak the Oromo language as a mother tongue (also called Afaan Oromoo and Oromiffa), which is part of the Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic family. The name was given as Ilm’ Orma ("Sons of Men" or an eponymous 'Orma') in the 19th century; the present form is probably an obsolete plural of the same word orma ("person, stranger").
Origins
Oromos are the largest Cushitic-speaking group of people living in Northeast Africa. Available information suggests that they have existed as a community in the Horn of Africa for several millennia (Prouty et al., 1981).
While further research is needed to precisely comprehend their origins, the Oromo are believed to have originally adhered to a pastoralist/nomadic and/or semi-agriculturalist lifestyle. Many historians agree that some Oromo clans (Bale) have lived in the southern tip of present-day Ethiopia for over a millennium. They suggest that a Great trade-influenced Oromo population movement brought most Oromos to present-day central and western Ethiopia in the 16th and 17th centuries. Historical maps of the ancient Aksum/Abyssinian Empire and Adal/Somali empires indicate that Oromo people are newcomers to most of modern-day central Ethiopia.

Oromo (pron. /ˈɒrəmoʊ/ or /ɔːˈroʊmoʊ/) is an Afroasiatic language. It is the most widely spoken tongue in the family's Cushitic branch. Forms of Oromo are spoken as a first language by more than 20 million Oromo people in Oromia and neighboring peoples in Ethiopia like:- In Harari region (56%) are Oromo people, Benishangul Gumuz, walloo(around 5 million Oromo people), west Gojjam(Metakkel woreda, Meca woreda 1 & 2, Ilma Nadessa woreda), Dire Dhawa administration(48% of Oromo people), Addis Ababa(Finfinnee) Adiminstration with more than 1.5 million Oromo people, Raayyaa and Azeeboo(more than 1.6 million Oromo people) in Tigrai region and parts of other countries in Africa Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania, South Africa, Egypt, Libya, Eritrea and other parts of the world like: US, specifically Minnesota (Little Oromia), Europe, Australia and Saudi Arabia. Oromo is a dialect continuum; not all varieties are mutually intelligible. Older publications often refer to the language as Galla, a term that is considered pejorative and no longer used.

Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa, after Nigeria, and the thirteenth most populous country in the world.
Ethiopia, like most countries in Africa, is a multi-ethnic state with more than 80 distinct ethnic groups, over 86 native languages, and around 200 spoken dialects.
One particularly prominent member of Ethiopia's many ethnic groups are the Oromo People.
The Oromo People are a Cushitic ethnic group native to the Oromia region of Ethiopia and parts of Northern Kenya. They are the most populous ethnolinguistic group in Ethiopia and constitute more than 35% of the population.
Smaller communities also exist in Somalia, with a population of around 100,000 people.
The Oromo People speak the Oromo language, which is the most widely spoken Cushitic language and the fourth-most widely spoken language in Africa, after Arabic, Hausa and Swahili.
The Oromo language serves as one of the official languages of Ethiopia and is also the working language of several regional states within the Ethiopian federal system, particularly Oromia, the Harari Region, and the Oromia Zone in the Amhara Region.
Here is a short sample of the Oromo language being casually spoken.
One major subgroup of the Oromo people are the Borana, who primarily inhabit southern Oromia, the Liben Zone of the Somali Region of Ethiopia, Northern Kenya, and also small parts of central Somalia. The Borana are largely pastoralists and primarily raise goats and cattle.

The remainder primarily adhere to Christianity, particularly Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.

Adherents of waaqeffanna believe in a supreme being called Waaqa, who is the father and creator of the universe and has many manifestations known as Ayyaana (or spirits). The Ayyaana serve as intermediary spirits between Waaqa and his creations.
It is estimated that about 3% of the Oromo population in present-day Ethiopia actively practice waaqeffanna.
Traditional Oromo cuisine primarily consists of various vegetable and meat side dishes.
Like most Ethiopian ethnic groups, the Oromo people don't eat pork because of religious reasons.
Coffee is considered the favorite beverage among the Oromo people, who have been growing and drinking coffee for centuries. The Oromo People were the first to cultivate coffee plants and recognize the energizing effect of coffee.
The Oromo people have traditionally used an indigenous democratic socio-political system known as the Gada system as their primary form of governance. The system regulates the political, economic, social and religious activities of the community.
A leader elected by the Gada system remains in power only for 8 years, with an election taking place at the end of those 8 years.

Can Somali and Oromo speakers understand each other or other Cushitic languages such as Beja, Afar, Hadiyya, Kambaata, Saho, and Sidama? In this episode we showcase some of the similarities between Oromo (Afaan Oromoo), which is one of the official languages of Ethiopia, native to the Ethiopian state of Oromia and primarily spoken in Ethiopia and northeastern Kenya, and Somali (Af Soomaali), which is the official language of Somalia and Somaliland, and also spoken in Djibouti, and parts of Ethiopia and Kenya. A list of words and sentences will be given to Quxube (Oromo speaker) and Ramla (Somali speaker) to see how well they can understand one another.

Oromo and Somali have the highest number of speakers among all the Cushitic languages.
Somali (Af Soomaali), as a Cushitic language in the Afroasiatic language family, is mainly spoken in Somalia and Somaliland, as well as Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Yemen. The language is written using the Latin alphabet. The adoption of the Latin orthography as the official national alphabet over several other previous writing scripts took place in 1972. Besides the Latin script, the Arabic and Wadaad scripts were used for writing the Somali language. The current Latin script was developed by several scholars of Somali, such as Musa Haji Ismail Galal, B. W. Andrzejewski and Shire Jama Ahmed, and it uses all letters of the English Latin alphabet except p, v and z. Other writing systems such as the Osmanya (invented by Osman Yusuf Kenadid), Borama (by Abdurahman Sheikh Nuur) and Kaddare alphabets (by Hussein Sheikh Ahmed Kaddare) were developed to write the Somali language as well.

Oromo is an Afroasiatic language in the Cushitic branch, primarily spoken by the Oromo people in Ethiopia's Oromia state and Northern Kenya. It serves as a lingua franca in these regions. With over 41.7 million native speakers, Oromo is the most spoken native language in Ethiopia, constituting 33.8% of the population, and the second most widely spoken language overall after Amharic.
Somali is an Afroasiatic language in the Cushitic branch, spoken by Somalis in Greater Somalia and the Somali diaspora. It is an official language in Somalia and Ethiopia, and a national language in Djibouti and northeastern Kenya. Somali is the best-documented Cushitic language, with studies dating back to the late 19th century. There are about 24 million Somali speakers, with around 17 million in Somalia, where it is spoken by 95% of the population.
This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. TOP 10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE OROMO
1. The Oromo are a Cushitic ethnic group native to the Oromia region of Ethiopia and parts of Northern Kenya in the Marsabit County, Isiolo County and Tana River County. They speak the Oromo language (also called Afaan Oromo), which is part of the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic language family.
2. Genetics
The origin of all Cushites is thought to be in southern Egypt and northern Sudan where they may have arisen through contact between proto-nilotes, Omotics from the Omo valley, Ancient Natufians who came into Egypt from the Levant and east African hunter gatherers. Their closest cousins are the Somali and Afar people. According to Y-DNA analysis by Hirbo 2,011, around 82.6% of Oromo in Kenya carry the paternal E1b1b haplogroup.
3. Origins.
According to oral history, the father of the Oromo people was Orma. The two sons of Orma, that is Borana and Barentu, gave rise to the two ethnic groups of the Oromo people. Barentu Oromo are found primarily in Ethiopia. The Borana Oromo live in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya.
Historical linguistics and comparative ethnology studies suggest that the Oromo people probably first settled around Lake Chew Bahir and Lake Chamo. They are a Cushitic people who have inhabited East Africa, specifically the area south and east of the Bale Mountains, since at least the early 1st millennium.
4. Beautiful women
Their faces are symmetrical, long and slim with wonderful eyebrows. Their complexion is a gorgeous caramel shade of melanin. Their smiles are enchanting and their movements are imbued with grace. When they smile, evidence of divine touch in their creation is clear. Many have long feminine hair and they proudly swish it in the air when they dance. Oromo ladies, like other Ethiopians are easily the most beautiful women on earth.
5. Their influence on the Somali is visible through the Garre tribe of Somalis who speak a Borana influenced dialect of Somali. Here is a sample of Garre language. Many Somalis and Oromo’s look indistinguishable due to decades of gene flow as well as common Cushitic heritage. The Gabra people of Kenya are another Oromo speaking sub-tribe with a heavy Somali influence.
6. According to the 2007 census 40 to 45 percent are Christian, 55 to 60 percent are Sunni and 3.3 percent follow the Ancient Oromo religion known as Waaqeffanna. Here is video of some Kenyan Oromo in church.

Oromo's largely live in the more fertile Southern, Central and Western Ethiopia, there is less food insecurity and basic needs are not as difficult to acquire as they are for Habesha's or Somali's. The majority of the Oromo people are farmers. Almost 90% of them live in rural areas and work in agriculture.
8. The Oromo people are known for their Gadaa system. It is a democratic highly developed system based on age-group with defined role system of governance in which a leader is elected for 8 years. It is one of the earliest examples of a fully developed democratic system.
9. Oromo language is an Afroasiatic language that is written in the Latin alphabet and has very complicated phonology. More than 35% of Ethiopia's population are Oromo mother-tongue speakers, which makes it the most widely spoken primary language in Ethiopia.
10. Even though they account for the biggest chunk of the population, they don’t have much political power in Ethiopia. For a long time, Oromo people have been persecuted and discriminated against for various reasons. There are documented human rights violations against the Oromo in Ethiopia under three successive regimes. Most of Oromo families had to change their names to Amhara to attend school.
11. The Oromo Liberation Front is an Oromo nationalist political party formed in 1973 to promote self-determination for the Oromo people inhabiting today's Oromia Region and Oromia Zone in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. The fundamental objective of the Oromo Liberation Movement is to gain self-determination for the Oromo people.
12. Did you know, Between the 12th and 19th centuries, the Oromo had one of the strongest militaries in the Horn of Africa. The military was well organized because of a strong political and social structure called Gada, which helped ensure power sharing and order among the people.
13. Lets talk about Oromo cuisine, shall we? The Oromos cuisine consists of various vegetable and meat side dishes and entrées. Pork is typically not in Oromo cuisine, as it's considered taboo for Orthodox and Muslim Oromos who make up over 90% of the population combined.
14. While slaves were a stratum within the society, many Oromos, regardless of caste, were sold into slavery elsewhere. By the 19th century, Oromo slaves were sought after and a major part of slaves sold in Gondar and Gallabat slave markets at Ethiopia-Sudan border, as well as the Massawa and Tajura markets on the Red Sea.

Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa, after Nigeria, and the thirteenth most populous country in the world.
Ethiopia, like most countries in Africa, is a multi-ethnic state with more than 80 distinct ethnic groups, over 86 native languages, and around 200 spoken dialects.
One particularly prominent member of Ethiopia's many ethnic groups are the Oromo People.
The Oromo People are a Cushitic ethnic group native to the Oromia region of Ethiopia and parts of Northern Kenya. They are the most populous ethnolinguistic group in Ethiopia and constitute more than 35% of the population.
Smaller communities also exist in Somalia, with a population of around 100,000 people.
The Oromo People speak the Oromo language, which is the most widely spoken Cushitic language and the fourth-most widely spoken language in Africa, after Arabic, Hausa and Swahili.
The Oromo language serves as one of the official languages of Ethiopia and is also the working language of several regional states within the Ethiopian federal system, particularly Oromia, the Harari Region, and the Oromia Zone in the Amhara Region.
Here is a short sample of the Oromo language being casually spoken.
One major subgroup of the Oromo people are the Borana, who primarily inhabit southern Oromia, the Liben Zone of the Somali Region of Ethiopia, Northern Kenya, and also small parts of central Somalia. The Borana are largely pastoralists and primarily raise goats and cattle.
Another major subgroup of the Oromo people are the Barento, who inhabit the eastern parts of the Oromia Region, the Jijiga Zone of the Somali Region, and the Oromia Zone of the Amhara Region.
Today, over half of the Oromo population adhere to Sunni Islam.
The remainder primarily adhere to Christianity, particularly Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.
A small minority still practice Waaqeffanna, a monotheistic religion that is also the traditional religion of the Oromo people.
Adherents of waaqeffanna believe in a supreme being called Waaqa, who is the father and creator of the universe and has many manifestations known as Ayyaana (or spirits). The Ayyaana serve as intermediary spirits between Waaqa and his creations.
It is estimated that about 3% of the Oromo population in present-day Ethiopia actively practice waaqeffanna.
Traditional Oromo cuisine primarily consists of various vegetable and meat side dishes.
Like most Ethiopian ethnic groups, the Oromo people don't eat pork because of religious reasons.
Coffee is considered the favorite beverage among the Oromo people, who have been growing and drinking coffee for centuries. The Oromo People were the first to cultivate coffee plants and recognize the energizing effect of coffee.
The Oromo people have traditionally used an indigenous democratic socio-political system known as the Gada system as their primary form of governance. The system regulates the political, economic, social and religious activities of the community.
A leader elected by the Gada system remains in power only for 8 years, with an election taking place at the end of those 8 years.

Oromo and Somali have the highest number of speakers among all the Cushitic languages.
Somali (Af Soomaali), as a Cushitic language in the Afroasiatic language family, is mainly spoken in Somalia and Somaliland, as well as Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Yemen. The language is written using the Latin alphabet. The adoption of the Latin orthography as the official national alphabet over several other previous writing scripts took place in 1972. Besides the Latin script, the Arabic and Wadaad scripts were used for writing the Somali language. The current Latin script was developed by several scholars of Somali, such as Musa Haji Ismail Galal, B. W. Andrzejewski and Shire Jama Ahmed, and it uses all letters of the English Latin alphabet except p, v and z. Other writing systems such as the Osmanya (invented by Osman Yusuf Kenadid), Borama (by Abdurahman Sheikh Nuur) and Kaddare alphabets (by Hussein Sheikh Ahmed Kaddare) were developed to write the Somali language as well.
Oromo (Afaan Oromoo) is primarily spoken in Ethiopia and northeastern Kenya. In Ethiopia, it has the largest number of native speaker, and is second to Amharic in the total number of speakers in the country. There are several different varieties of the language, stretching all across Ethiopia and Kenya. Although Oromo is written with a Latin alphabet called Qubee (formally adopted in 1991), in the past the Sapalo script was used, invented by Sheikh Bakri Sapalo (Abubaker Usman Odaa), and in some cases, within Muslim majority areas, the Arabic script is sometimes used.

Oromo is an Afroasiatic language in the Cushitic branch, primarily spoken by the Oromo people in Ethiopia's Oromia state and Northern Kenya. It serves as a lingua franca in these regions. With over 41.7 million native speakers, Oromo is the most spoken native language in Ethiopia, constituting 33.8% of the population, and the second most widely spoken language overall after Amharic.
Somali is an Afroasiatic language in the Cushitic branch, spoken by Somalis in Greater Somalia and the Somali diaspora. It is an official language in Somalia and Ethiopia, and a national language in Djibouti and northeastern Kenya. Somali is the best-documented Cushitic language, with studies dating back to the late 19th century. There are about 24 million Somali speakers, with around 17 million in Somalia, where it is spoken by 95% of the population.
