The Battle of Ormoc Bay
The Battle of Ormoc was one of the fiercest and most pivotal battles of the Pacific War. It prevented the Japanese from further resupplying and reinforcing their troops. Ormoc Bay became the ground zero and setting of a very decisive war in the Pacific that changed the course of the Pacific War. Ormoc became the epicenter of the Allied power’s offensive strategy, isolating Imperial Japan’s military holdings due to its vital location, for the overall military operations in the Philippines.
Per historian Irwin J. Kappes, “It was this Battle of Ormoc Bay from November 11 - December 21, 1944, through the combined efforts of the Allied Forces – Army, Navy, and Marine fighter planes that defeated the Imperial Japanese Forces.”

The Naval Battle That No One Expected to Survive
After one hour of dashing madly across the Surigao Strait under ceaseless Japanese warplane fire, the three brand-new American Sumner-class destroyers finally made it to their target: Ormoc Bay.
The damaged destroyers had burst into one of the most heavily defended ports in the Pacific Theater to destroy as many ships, military assets, supply depots, and military men as they could. It was practically a suicide mission.
Once there, the state-of-the-art vessels were met by a blistering barrage of enemy fire unlike most sailors had witnessed in their lives, and were completely engulfed in a haze of shore, sea-based, air, and undersea weapons.
Soon, a lucky torpedo found its target on USS Cooper, which plummeted into the seabed in less than a minute. But her brave sailors continued fightin...

The Shipwrecks of Ormoc – An End for Destroyers
In previous shipwreck videos, I've covered some of the wrecks in Ormoc Bay. Shimakaze, Ward and Wakatsuki. Those were the most detailed in terms of survey material.
Or, in the case of Shimakaze, possessing the name recognition to justify a solo video.
Today, we'll be looking at the remaining three discovered, thus far. The Japanese destroyers Hamanami and Naganami. And the American USS Cooper. Three interesting ships and interesting wrecks...but none of them have enough material for a solo video. So, they'll be covered together.
...hopefully this doesn't backfire on me.

USS Cooper: Return to Ormoc Bay (Trailer)
A daring, world record scuba dive to a sunken wreck -- witnessed by a man who nearly perished on that ship sixty-one years ago.
USS Cooper: Return to Ormoc Bay is a documentary about men who travel to dangerous depths, pushing the edge -- to a point where they can hear death's whisper -- to honor the 191 casualties of the USS Cooper which sank on December 3, 1944. Men in this film take the time to remember and "re-member," as they reassemble the past to put things right - honor their comrades, create ritual, bless the water, and acknowledge those who made great sacrifices.
The documentary travels along two story arcs that traverse the past and present. Hank Wagener, an old warrior, was on the USS Cooper when it sank. He has survived to tell the story and remember those who were lost ...

But her brave sailors continued fighting, firing at the enemy ships as much as they could before being swallowed by the sea.

He has survived to tell the story and remember those who were lost in Ormoc Bay, Leyte Philippines. Diver Rob Lalumiere, a young warrior, attempts to accomplish a world record 633 foot (193 meters) scuba dive to place a memorial plaque on the wreck to honor those who perished.
The film explores the state of tragedy - the incomprehension we face when confronted with great, unspeakable loss. It also soars, touches the ineffable, and conveys promise. And in this balance, the film possesses great wit and humor.
