The village was founded in 1811. The Erie Canal passed through the village until it was re-routed during major re-routing and reconstruction later in the 19th Century.
While historical records are scarce, the naming of the village has become something of an urban legend. As the legend goes there was a mix up at the post office - a missing comma. Instead of "Oriska, NY" the envelope was labeled as "Oriska NY" and shortly after "Oriskany, NY" was born.

Destruction of the USS Oriskany aircraft carrier
The legendary American aircraft carriers are a mobile floating military airbase and a powerful tool of geopolitical influence. Due to the impressive buoyancy and reliable protection of the aircraft carrier strike group, they are considered practically invulnerable. But history knows many examples of how the human factor and technical failures caused accidents on military vehicles.Today we will tell you about a series of tragic events at USS Oriskany, about who, why, and how buried one of the most legendary US aircraft carriers at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as about the further fate of a veteran of several wars. Watch this before DIVING the USS Oriskany!
This was a bucket list dive of mine for a long time. After moving to Navarre Florida and having Pensacola right down the road I knew I was going to make it happen. I you do not have this dive as a top 10 dive site destination, you need to! What an experience. In this video I talk about the limits for recreational limits and gas planning if you are making a trip to the Mighty O. June and early July are a great time to dive the Oriskany as the water is getting warm but the visibility is still good, plus the sandbar sharks and the bull sharks will be in the area.

Death and Destruction at the Battle of Oriskany
While the Mohawk and Seneca Indians and British Loyalists were ambushing General Nicholas Herkimer and his Tryon County militiamen at The Battle of Oriskany on August 6, 1777, Lieutenant Colonel Marinus Willett and 250 Continentals were destroying the unprotected British camp outside Fort Stanwix. Once alerted to Willett’s presence, Native American and British forces abandoned the fight to protect their belongings. Willet’s men retreated into Fort Stanwix, but they had saved Herkimer’s militiamen from certain annihilation. In an indication of the ferocity of the battle, 385 of the 700 Tryon County militiamen, or an astonishing 55 percent, had been killed, an unparalleled percentage for an American force during the Revolutionary War.

A team of Navy personnel accomplished the sinking of the ship on 17 May 2006, supported by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Escambia County Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Pensacola Police Department, and several sheriff departments of Escambia County and surrounding counties.
A Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Panama City, FL detonated C-4 explosive charges of approximately 500 lb (230 kg) net explosive weight, strategically placed on 22 sea connection pipes in various machinery spaces.
The ship sank stern first 37 minutes after detonation in 210 ft (64 m) of water in the Gulf of Mexico.
As was intended, the ship came to rest lying upright. The flight deck was at a depth of 135 ft (41 m), and its island rose to 70 ft (21 m). Following Hurricane Gustav, the ship shifted 10 feet deeper leaving the flight deck at 145 feet (44 m).
The island structure is accessible to recreational divers, but the flight deck will require additional training and equipment. It is now popularly known as the "Great Carrier Reef", a reference to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Diving the Oriskany is a surreal experience. The flight deck extends further than I can see. In this video you will notice a crackling sound. This sound is from snapping shrimp hiding in the coral growing on the Oriskany.

Your Nitrox should be at 28% and no more than 30%. Plan to dive within your Maximum Operating Depth and watch your NDL time. Start your dive at its deepest depth first and make your way up and around the tower. With a good SAC rate you should be back at the line with about 750-1000 PSI on a steel 100 tank.

Tom Hand, creator and publisher of Americana Corner, discusses the death and destruction enacted during the Battle of Oriskany, and why it still matters today.

The Battle of Oriskany was one of the most bloody of the entire Revolutionary War. It was fought between Patriot militia and members of the Iroquois Confederacy who had been forced to take sides. It was a bitter encounter, from which there were no winners. https://www.battlefields.org/untold
