The Assault on Democracy from Historical Perspectives: The January 6 Insurrection One Year Later
Since the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, it has been clear to most Americans that we are witnessing one of the greatest assaults on democracy in modern U.S. history. Yet, contemporary reports often fail to situate these threats to democratic practice in a wider historical lens. This session, featuring some of our nation’s leading U.S. historians, will orient recent social and political events and actions that have attacked U.S. democracy into deeper analysis informed by historical research and practice.
The links between the January 6th insurrection and the growth of the white power movement in the United States continue to frame our recent politics, as well as the perceived threat of the growing empowerment of people of color in the United States. Acts of physical v...

The Dobbs v Jackson Decision in Historical Perspective
On June 24, 2022, in the case of Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution does not confer the right to abortion, overturning nearly 50 years of precedent established by both Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey (1992).
On Thursday, July 7th at 6pm ET, we examined the Dobbs v. Jackson decision in historical perspective. Erika Lee, OAH President and University of Minnesota, hosted guests Gillian Frank, cohost of Sexing History, Felicia Kornbluh, University of Vermont, and Stacie Taranto, Ramapo College of New Jersey, in a conversation about the history leading to Dobbs and how the ruling could potentially impact other past SCOTUS decisions.

History on Trial: An American History Forum with Educators
From school board meetings to the halls of state legislatures and front-page news, the politicization of the teaching and writing of United States history is reshaping what can and cannot be taught in our nation’s classrooms at all levels. Rooted in the sentiment that there is only a singular narrative explaining the American experiment, past and present, these efforts seek to take us back to an earlier era characterized by a limited, celebratory vision that ignores the core conflict of our national story: that the United States was founded on radical notions of liberty, freedom, and equality, but built on systems of slavery, exploitation, and exclusion. Panelists will focus on the challenges of teaching and presenting history in today’s classrooms, public spaces and museums, debates over ...

The links between the January 6th insurrection and the growth of the white power movement in the United States continue to frame our recent politics, as well as the perceived threat of the growing empowerment of people of color in the United States. Acts of physical violence are one product of that perceived threat, including those against women and the elderly in the Asian American community, even as they also reflect longstanding xenophobic sentiments in U.S. history. Another is the critical need to understand the persistence of anti-democratic ideologies in the Republican Party since the New Deal to place current voter suppression legislation into proper perspective. The mobilization of African American and other people of color voters in the 2020/2021 elections have raised the stakes of U.S. democracy in the future and foretold the continued battles over the very definition of the United States and its people.

Panelists will focus on the challenges of teaching and presenting history in today’s classrooms, public spaces and museums, debates over what and whose history will be taught, and lessons to be gleaned from “history wars” of the past.
This forum honors the late Gary B. Nash — former president of the Organization of American Historians and staunch defender of teaching history in all its complexity.
Co-sponsored by UCLA Department of History, Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History, the Thomas E. Lifka Endowed Chair of History, and the Joyce Appleby Endowed Chair of America in the World.
The transcript from the event is available as a PDF.
