Coel Hen

Coel (Old Welsh: Coil) or Coel Hen ("Coel the Old") is a figure prominent in Welsh literature and legend since the Middle Ages. Early Welsh tradition knew of a Coel Hen (Coel the Old), a leader in Roman or Sub-Roman Britain and the progenitor of several kingly lines in the Hen Ogledd ("the Old North"), the Brittonic-speaking part of northern England and southern Scotland. Later medieval legend told of a Coel, apparently derived from Coel Hen, who was the father of Saint Helena and the grandfather of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Other similarly named characters may be confused or conflated with the Welsh Coel. The legendary "King Coel" is sometimes supposed to be the historical basis for the popular nursery rhyme "Old King Cole", but this is unlikely.

Name

Coel's name was rendered "Coil" in Old Welsh. It may be related to the common noun coel, meaning "belief or omen". Coel is often named as "Coel Hen", Hen being an epithet Hen meaning "old" (i.e., "Coel the Old"). The genealogies give him an additional epithet, Godebog (Old Welsh: Guotepauc), meaning "Protector" or "Shelterer". His name is thus sometimes given as "Coel Godebog" or "Coel Hen Godebog". However, some of the Harleian genealogies list Godebog as Coel's father's name.Geoffrey of Monmouth Latinized the name to Coelus. Some modern authors modernize it to "Cole".

    Nat King Cole

Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American singer who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist. He was widely noted for his soft, baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres, becoming a major force in popular music for three decades. Cole was one of the first African Americans to host a national television variety show, The Nat King Cole Show, and has maintained worldwide popularity since his death from lung cancer in February 1965.

    Early life

Nathaniel Adams Coles was born in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 17, 1919. Cole had three brothers: Eddie (1910–1970), Ike (1927–2001), and Freddy (born 1931), and a half-sister, Joyce Coles. Each of Cole's brothers would later pursue careers in music as well. When Cole was four years old, he and his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where his father, Edward Coles, became a Baptist minister. Cole learned to play the organ from his mother, Perlina Coles, the church organist. His first performance was of "Yes! We Have No Bananas" at age four. He began formal lessons at 12, eventually learning not only jazz and gospel music, but also Western classical music, performing, as he said, "from Johann Sebastian Bach to Sergei Rachmaninoff".

    Orange Colored Sky

"Orange Colored Sky" is a popular song, written by Milton DeLugg and Willie Stein and published in 1950.

The best-known version of the song was recorded by Nat King Cole (with Stan Kenton's orchestra), but a number of other singers have recorded it, including Cole's daughter, Natalie.

The recording by Nat King Cole was recorded on August 16, 1950 and released by Capitol Records as catalog number 1184. It first reached the Billboard Best Seller chart on September 22, 1950 and lasted 13 weeks on the chart, peaking at number 11. (Some sites list a 1945 date for this recording, but this is apparently in error.)

The first known recording was on July 11, 1950 on KING records catalog number 15061, with Janet Brace singing and Milton Delugg conducting the orchestra.

The recording by Jerry Lester was released by Coral Records as catalog number 60325. It first reached the Billboard Best Seller chart on November 24, 1950 and lasted one week in the chart, peaking at number 30. Jerry Lester was the host of the late-night NBC series Broadway Open House, on which co-writer DeLugg was musical director. Because of the exposure that the song received on that show, "Orange Colored Sky" has been said to be one of the first songs to become a hit through television exposure.

    Coloured

In Southern Africa, the term Coloureds (also known as Bruinmense or Kleurlinge) is an ethnic label for people of mixed ethnic origin who possess ancestry from Europe, Asia, and various Khoisan and Bantu ethnic groups of southern Africa. Not all Coloured people share the same ethnic background. As a result, Coloured people can possess a variety of different features. Besides the extensive combining of these diverse heritages in the Western Cape in which a distinctive Cape Coloured and affiliated Cape Malay culture developed in other parts of Southern Africa, their development has usually been the result of the meeting of two distinct groups. Genetic studies suggest the group has the highest levels of mixed ancestry in the world. However, the maternal (female) contribution to the Coloured population, measured by mitochondrial DNA studies, was found to come mostly from the Khoisan population.

    Background

The origins of the Coloured community stems from numerous interracial sexual unions between Western European males and Khoisan females in the Cape Colony from the 17th century onwards.

Some historians believe that the ancient Britons, including Helena’s father, King Coel II, had Armenian origins. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle mentions that the first inhabitants of Britain were Armenians, linking the Britons and Armenians. Helena, known for her beauty and intellect, received an elite Roman education, mastering multiple languages and artistic skills. While some early historians considered her a British princess, later accounts by Edward Gibbon suggested she was of lower birth, sparking debates about her true origins. https://youtu.be/APkev0UnJxY?si=OUht8PBUN0ApvWGu
