Inside an enchanting Modernist House discreetly tucked away in Long Beach, California | House Tour
Erik and Mayumi had spent a long while searching for their dream Modernist home, one that captured the essence of a bygone era while offering unique architectural charm. Their journey took them through numerous open houses—Eichler's and Cliff May’s—and endless listings, each one falling short of their vision. That changed when they stumbled upon a hidden gem designed by Leopold Fischer for Dr. Ward Youry, a relatively unknown yet brilliantly talented architect whose work had recently been rediscovered. The house, with its clean lines, expansive windows, and organic integration with the surrounding landscape, was the perfect blend of history and artistry they had always dreamed of.

Inside a Northern California Modernist Tree House from 1963 | House Tour
Sacramento may not be widely recognized for its Modernist architecture, but the city boasts a significant number of Modernist homes and buildings, particularly in the northern region. John Harvey Carter was a pivotal figure in shaping Sacramento's architectural landscape, contributing to both private commissioned residences and commercial structures, as well as playing a key role in the establishment of the American River Parkway. With a portfolio encompassing over 400 buildings in Northern California, Carter left an indelible mark on the region.
Adding to the unexpected charms of Sacramento, The Nittler Residence which was built in 1963 by John Harvey Carter stands out as one of the rare homes situated on a suburban hillside in the area. Karen and Najib stumbled upon this distinctive pro...

Open Space | The McWilliams Residence, by John W. McWilliams, (1958)
The McWilliams Residence, by John W. McWilliams (1958). Inspired by the Case Study program Engineer John McWilliams set out to build his own personal residence on a Long Beach lot which housed a lumber yard for the Los Altos tract in which it stands. The Architectural elements of the home can be seen on many of the Case Study homes from its time. Blake Nicolai and his Family admired the house from afar on their commute to and from work and when the stars aligned they found themselves purchasing this Architectural home to make it their own.

The renovation became a labor of love, transforming the house into a stunning fusion of past and present, a testament to their commitment to preserving architectural history while creating a warm, welcoming home.

Andrew's description of how he came to reside in the Walker House is an exceptional account of fortunate circumstances unraveling. With a deep passion for Architecture, Design and Preservation, Andrew is a walking billboard for Saving Good Architecture and sharing it with others. Schindler's Walker House is not merely a structure; it's a living canvas of architectural ingenuity. Perched on the hills of Silver Lake, it commands attention with its sleek lines and dynamic angles, a testament to Schindler's commitment to challenging convention.
From finding the perfect furniture pieces that fit the home so generously to the artwork, ceramics and plants that fill the home, Andrew and his family have done a wonderful job at showcasing how a family with kids can live in a home that is blended so beautifully into the hillside. The Walker House stands as a timeless reminder of Schindler's genius, inviting us to reimagine the possibilities of modern living with every glance.

Both Streng Bros. and Carter Sparks have left indelible marks on the architectural landscape of California, contributing to the rich tapestry of mid-century modernism in the region. Their innovative designs continue to be cherished and celebrated by enthusiasts of modern architecture.

Karen and Najib stumbled upon this distinctive property while perusing homes for sale in their neighborhood, and the story of how they came to own it is both surprising and perhaps fateful to some. The residence retains much of its original character, boasting features like wood paneling, terrazzo flooring, a spiral staircase entry, and copper facade fireplaces. Its unique layout seamlessly accommodates the needs of the family of five, with the yard, patio, and hillside areas flowing effortlessly from the rear of the home. You can rest assured that the home is in the right hands and will be beautifully preserved for years to come.
