The one-platoon system, also known as iron man football, is a platoon system in American football where players play on both offense and defense. It was the result of smaller roster sizes in the early days of the game and rules that limited player substitutions, rules that are also standard procedure in many other sports but were eliminated in the 1940s as free substitution was legalized. The alternative system is known as the "two-platoon system", or simply the "platoon system", because of its use of separate offensive and defensive units (three platoons if special teams is also counted).
Each system was used at different times in American college football and in the National Football League. One-platoon football is seen in modern times mostly on lower-end and smaller teams at the high school and semi-pro levels, where player shortages and talent disparities require it; the system allows teams to play with a smaller roster than a two-platoon or multiple-platoon team, but because players are on the field the entire game with no rest between series, players slow down and become fatigued more quickly in the later stages of a game, hence why it has since become obsolete.

Stable Vehicle Platooning
Connected vehicle (CV) technology facilitates communication among vehicles, the infrastructure, and other road users. CV technology enables forming virtual trains of vehicles, called “platoons”. Due to constant communication, vehicles in a platoon are able to travel with small gaps between them. Platoon formation can introduce many benefits including (i) creating energy efficiency through reducing the aerodynamic drag force on platoon members, (ii) increasing road capacity through reducing the following distances between vehicles, and (iii) facilitating real-time management of traffic, among other benefits.
Previous theoretical and experimental analysis have revealed two important facts: (i) Platoons “are not all born equal”, and one platoon formation may be “greener” than another; and (i...

Training Method - 21s/Platoon System
The Platoon System (21s)
This system is more elaborate than one-and-a-halves because you do a series of half reps in the lower range of motion, a series of half reps in the upper range of motion, and then a series of full reps. You can use any number of reps - I always did 10-10-10 - as long as you do the same number for each of your half reps and full reps. Traditionally, many bodybuilders have used 7 reps - hence the name 21s: 3 x 7. The extra stress generated by this kind of training comes about because you have to stop the movement right in the middle, and this forces the muscles to exert themselves in ways they are not used to.

Connected vehicle (CV) technology facilitates communication among vehicles, the infrastructure, and other road users. CV technology enables forming virtual trains of vehicles, called “platoons”. Platoon formation can introduce many benefits including (i) creating energy efficiency through reducing the aerodynamic drag force on platoon members, (ii) increasing road capacity through reducing the following distances between vehicles, and (iii) facilitating real-time management of traffic, among other benefits.
Previous theoretical and experimental analysis have revealed two important facts: (i) Platoons “are not all born equal”, and one platoon formation may be “greener” than another; and (ii) Position matters. More specifically, the reduction of fuel consumption distributes unevenly among vehicles in a platoon. Depending on the platoon formation and composition, each vehicle in the platoon may benefit differently from platooning. The highest drag saving normally occurs for middle vehicles while the lead vehicle has the least amount of drag reduction. Therefore, in order to form successful platoons we devise:
1- Payment mechanisms to compensate the platoon leader to facilitate platoon formation
2- Path planning algorithms that can route vehicles such than they can be platooned
3- Trajectory planning methods that can navigate vehicles to form platoons, once they are traveling on the same transportation link (e.g., section of a highway)

Here I take eight minutes to describe the workings of a World War Two British infantry platoon, which serves as a model for platoons from all modern armies. I of course do not waste the opportunity to take a swipe at a few films while I'm at it.

Platoons - a natural unit size for a modern army

Keep training
