The ondes Martenot (/ˈoʊndmɑːrtᵻˈnoʊ/ or OHNDmar-tə-NOH; French:[ɔ̃d maʁtəno], "Martenot waves"), also known as the ondium Martenot, Martenot and ondes musicales, is an early electronic musical instrument invented in 1928 by Maurice Martenot. The original design was similar in sound to the theremin. The sonic capabilities of the instrument were later expanded by the addition of timbral controls and switchable loudspeakers.
The instrument's eerie wavering notes are produced by varying the frequency of oscillation in vacuum tubes. The production of the instrument stopped in 1988, but several conservatories in France still offer instruction to students of the instrument.
In 1997 the Ondéa project began designing an instrument based on the ondes Martenot. Since the Martenot name is still protected, the new instrument is called Ondéa, but has the playing and operational characteristics of the original ondes Martenot. In 2001 a completed prototype was first used in concerts. These instruments have been in regular use since 2005.

Mahler's 2nd - parts of the 5th Movement on solo Ondomo / Ondes Martenot
Hi Guys! 💥
So here's a part of the 5th movement of Mahler's 2. symphony, performed on a modern day Ondes Martenot, build in Japan by ondomo.net, their instrument simply called the "Ondomo" ("wave" in japanese).
The Instrument was featured at NAMM 2018 I think, and is now unfortunately sold out (100 were initially crafted), but who knows, if maybe Naoyuki Omo and his team builds more in the future?
Anyways, wanted to share this calm and beautiful piece of music with you guys. I think it really suites the instrument with these choir-like parts.
Headphones or speakers are recommended for a nice experience of the music (there's quite a lot of bottom end)
It's layered up to 75 times, and I perform a lead voice in the clip. Bit of reverb/delay and mastering, that's all.

Ondomo Ondes Martenot Demonstration
Steve Christie from Vintage Keys Studio demonstrates the Ondomo Ondes Martenot.
Also included are a home made (slightly rattly prototype) ‘Metallique’ speaker and a Bozavox (Sonovox replica).
This was from an initial run of 100 instruments made by Naoyuki Omo in Tokyo, and came from the Ondes Martenot player (and original owner) Josh Semans. It has his name etched in the face plate.
N.B.: This one was purchased secondhand in need of slight repair - obviously a brand new Ondomo (if there should ever be more made) would be built impeccably and work perfectly.

The Synthesis of Synthesis- The Ondes Martenot
Inspired by Leon Theremin's incredible device, Maurice Martenot set about creating a device of his own. His Ondes Martenot became an important stepping stone in the development of synthesizers, as well as an inspiring musical instrument for composers. Hi Guys!
Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to make some music with me. I do remote sessions and read/write music also.

Full titles read: "For generations the invention of new music-making instruments has almost stood still. Today we present Professor Maurice Martenot with his new electrical creation."
The song featured in the beginning is "Starry Night", the hymn.
M/S's of Martenot playing the new instrument. The invention has a keyboard similar to that of a piano, however it also has a strange wire that lies on top of the keys, which Martenot holds as he plays. Martenot explains that the machine works by electrical devices and opens up the it's top to look inside. He makes several sounds with the device including the sound of a bird and of a double bass, just by pressing a few buttons.
Note: Appears to be a very early form of electrical organ or synthesiser. Ron Saunders says "This Frenchman's accent puts Sellers / Clouseau's to shame".

Inspired by Leon Theremin's incredible device, Maurice Martenot set about creating a device of his own. His Ondes Martenot became an important stepping stone in the development of synthesizers, as well as an inspiring musical instrument for composers. Marc describes the history and effect of the creation of this device.
