Wine production in the Okanagan dates to the 1850s, with the establishment of Okanagan Mission and the planting of grapevines to supply sacramental wines. In the early 20th century, prohibition in Canada wiped out many of the Okanagan's earliest wineries and the commercial wine industry in the area was not revived until the 1930s. From this time through the mid-1970s, the Okanagan wine industry was based entirely on the production of fruit wines and those produced from hybrid grapes. The first commercial plantings of vinifera came in 1975 when the Osoyoos Indian Band established Inkameep Vineyards (today Nk'mip Cellars).
The Okanagan (/oʊkəˈnɑːɡən/OHK-ə-NAH-gən), also known as the Okanagan Valley and sometimes as the Okanagan Country, is a region located in the Canadian province of British Columbia defined by the basin of Okanagan Lake and the Canadian portion of the Okanagan River. It is part of the Okanagan Country, extending into the United States as Okanogan Country. As of 2011, the region's population is approximately 341,818. The primary city is Kelowna. The region is known for its dry, sunny climate, dry landscapes and lakeshore communities and particular lifestyle. The economy is retirement and commercial-recreation based, with outdoor activities such as boating and watersports, snow skiing and hiking. Agriculture has been focused primarily on fruit orchards, with a recent shift in focus to vineyards and wine. The region stretches northwards via the Spallumcheen Valley to connect to Sicamous in the Shuswap Country, and reaches south of the Canada–United States border, where it continues as Okanogan County. The Okanagan as a region is sometimes described as including the Boundary, Similkameen and Shuswap regions, though this is because of proximity and historic and commercial ties with those areas.
Okanagan was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia beginning with the election of 1903 and lasting only until the election of 1912, after which it was succeeded by North Okanagan and South Okanagan. The riding was originally part of the Yale riding until 1890. When that riding was first broken up the Okanagan was in Yale-East (1894–1900).

Is it safe to jump in Okanagan Lake with recent high E. Coli counts?
Go ahead and jump in.
That's the word from Interior Health and the City of Kelowna days after some E. coli news gave some wondering if they should head to the lake during the heatwave.
"Generally, the water quality in the Okanagan is good and people shouldn't be afraid to go swimming."
Russel's remarks come almost a week after news emerged of E. coli numbers 30 times the acceptable limit at Rotary Beach in West Kelowna's Gellatly Bay.

Our next stop was Juniper Bay Beach which was a 10-minute walk from Jade Bay and was even more impressive. This bay also has a nice beach, but it is much sandier than its neighbor and features a rocky outcropping where visitors can enjoy some private little coves away from the busier area. There is a large grassy area and several picnic tables perfectly suited for family gatherings. The water here is incredibly blue and super clear.

The third stop we had was at Rattlesnake Point where we enjoyed the stunning views from high atop the cliffs. This area is very rugged and is a popular spot for cliff diving and swimming around the rocky coves. Again the water there is insanely blue and almost resembles that of the Caribbean Sea.

BC election special: Race sits on a knife edge with several seats too close to call | FULL
British Columbia’s provincial election turned out to be just as close as pollsters predicted, with the outcome sitting on a knife edge late Saturday night as the final results trickled in.
As of 10:45 p.m. PT, the BC NDP were leading or elected in 46 seats, the BC Conservatives were leading or elected in 45 seats, and the Greens were leading or elected in two seats.
The NDP had 44.55 per cent of the popular vote, compared to 43.53 for the BC Conservatives and 8.28 for the BC Green Party.
That split, if it holds, would make for an NDP minority government. But with a few poll stations still to report, several races had leads of under 500 votes, and two races, Juan de Fuca-Malahat and Surrey Centre, had the NDP leading by under 50 votes.
If the Conservatives can flip those ridings, it wo...

If the Conservatives can flip those ridings, it would put them at the 47 seats needed to form a majority government.
Global News had extensive coverage of B.C.'s election night with a province-wide 'Decision B.C.' special, featuring up-to-the-minute results and analysis.
Global's anchors, reporters and two panels of experts broke down the results as they came in, taking a close look at what they mean for British Columbians. Watch the full election special here.

Description: The Canadian province of British Columbia is partitioned into regional districts, as a means to better enable municipalities and rural areas to work together at a regional level. Similar to counties in other parts of Canada, regional districts serve only to provide municipal services as the local government in areas not incorporated into a municipality, and in certain regional affairs of shared concern between residents of unincorporated areas and those in the municipalities such as a stakeholder role in regional planning. In those predominantly rural areas, regional districts provide services such as land use planning, building inspection and some responsibility for community fire protection. Regional districts also provide some services, such as solid-waste management, but otherwise differ from counties in having no powers or similar bodies with other arms of government whose powers are much more sweeping, including forests, environment, health, schools, provincial and courts. They are not the equivalent of counties and their powers and democratic mandate are substantially weaker. Most land within a regional district is under control of other arms of the provincial government, or in the case of national parks and offshore waters, of the federal government. Indian reserves located within the boundaries of regional districts are likewise excluded from their jurisdiction and infrastructure, and there are varying levels of collaboration between First Nations governments and regional district boards. Regional districts are governed by boards of directly and indirectly elected directors. Municipalities appoint directors to represent their populations , while residents of unincorporated areas elect directors directly. The votes of directors from municipalities generally count more than the votes of directors from electoral areas, and larger municipalities have more votes than smaller ones. For example, both North Saanich and Metchosin appoint one director to the Capital Regional District board of directors, but the vote of North Saanich's director counts three times as much as the vote of Metchosin's appointee.

In this vlog, we visited one of the Okanagan Valley's most beautiful locations called Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park. The park is located in the city of Vernon, British Columbia, and is one of Canada's most prized possessions.

There are many trails throughout the park, but on this journey, we started out walking down to lovely Jade Bay Beach with the goal of reaching Rattlesnake Point. Jade Bay Beach is a nice stretch of pebbles and sand that is a perfect day-use area, especially if you have kids. It's also the ideal spot to watch incredible Okanagan Valley sunsets during the summer months. The beach is equipped with several picnic tables and an outhouse.

~~~ List of regional districts of British Columbia ~~~
Title: What is List of regional districts of British Columbia
Created on: 2018-10-09
Source Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regional_districts_of_British_Columbia
------
Description: The Canadian province of British Columbia is partitioned into regional districts, as a means to better enable municipalities and rural areas to work together at a regional level. Similar to counties in other parts of Canada, regional districts serve only to provide municipal services as the local government in areas not incorporated into a municipality, and in certain regional affairs of shared concern between residents of unincorporated areas and those in the municipalities such as a stakeholder role in regional planning. In those predominantly rural areas, regional districts provide services such as land use planning, building inspection and some responsibility for community fire protection. Regional districts also provide some services, such as solid-waste management, but otherwise differ from counties in having no powers or similar bodies with other arms of government whose powers are much more sweeping, including forests, environment, health, schools, provincial and courts. They are not the equivalent of counties and their powers and democratic mandate are substantially weaker. Most land within a regional district is under control of other arms of the provincial government, or in the case of national parks and offshore waters, of the federal government. Indian reserves located within the boundaries of regional districts are likewise excluded from their jurisdiction and infrastructure, and there are varying levels of collaboration between First Nations governments and regional district boards. Regional districts are governed by boards of directly and indirectly elected directors. Municipalities appoint directors to represent their populations , while residents of unincorporated areas elect directors directly. The votes of directors from municipalities generally count more than the votes of directors from electoral areas, and larger municipalities have more votes than smaller ones. For example, both North Saanich and Metchosin appoint one director to the Capital Regional District board of directors, but the vote of North Saanich's director counts three times as much as the vote of Metchosin's appointee.
Learn more about the roles and responsibilities of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS), including services, taxation, and governance structure.
The RDOS covers a fairly large geographic area from Manning Park to the west, bordering Peachland to the north, Anarchist Mountain to the east, and the United States border to the south.
Just under 90,000 people live within the RDOS. That includes residents of the six member municipalities: Summerland, Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos, Keremeos, and Princeton.
Regional districts provide rural residents, those living in unincorporated communities outside municipalities with an effective form of local government. Unincorporated areas are grouped into Electoral Areas. There are nine in the RDOS.
Some examples of RDOS services include building inspection and permits, land use planning and subdivision servicing, fire protection, dog control, transit, and trails among others.
Important notes:
The Regional District does not directly collect taxes.
The Regional District is not responsible for hospitals or schools. The Regional Hospital District provides the local share for financing hospital construction and equipment requests.
The Regional District does not have authority to provide services for roads or policing.
