A formerly independent municipality, Oerlikon was merged with Zürich in 1934 and forms today, together with Affoltern and Seebach, the city district 11.
History
The name Oerlikon goes back to the alemannic settlement founder Orilo. Oerlikon was mentioned for the first time in the year 946 (other source: 942) as Orlinchowa. At that time the town consisted of no more than one dozen houses and was part of the municipality Schwamendingen, where the inhabitants of Oerlikon went to school and attended church. In 1855 a railway that connected southern Germany with Zürich was built. Thus, Oerlikon grew at a very fast pace and became a hub for industry and trade. In 1872 Oerlikon was separated from Schwamendingen and became its own municipality. In 1897 a tramway from Zürich to Oerlikon was built. Branch lines led also to Seebach and Schwamendingen.
Places of interest
South of the railway line the Oerlikon town center with the shopping centres Neumarkt and züri 11 shopping, the luxurious hotel Swissôtel and the market place are located. North of the station, a new quarter called Neu-Oerlikon (New Oerlikon) is being built. In the former industrial area new living and working area is created. This urban architecture is lightened up by generous parks. In the last few years, four very outstanding new parks were built: The Oerliker Park with a look-out tower, the MFO-Park on the area of the earlier engine factory Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon, the Traugott Wahlen-Park and the Louis-Häfliger-Park.
Oerlikon-Bührle, a company in Zürich, Switzerland that used to own Bally Shoe, Oerlikon Contraves, Pilatus Aircraft and Britten-Norman Aircraft, see Fairey Aviation Company
Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon, the Oerlikon subsidiary later became Oerlikon-Bührle, and is now part of Asea Brown Boveri
Oerlikon Contraves, a Swiss anti-aircraft artillery manufacturer founded in Zürich Oerlikon
The Oerlikon 20mm cannon is a series of autocannons, based on an original German 20 mm Becker design that appeared very early in World War I. It was widely produced by Oerlikon Contraves and others, with various models employed by both Allied and Axis forces during World War II, and many versions still in use today.
Because the Treaty of Versailles banned further production of such weapons in Germany, the patents and design works were transferred in 1919 to the Swiss firm SEMAG (Seebach Maschinenbau Aktien Gesellschaft) based near Zürich. SEMAG continued development of the weapon, and in 1924 had produced the SEMAG L, a heavier weapon (43kg) that fired more powerful 20x100RB ammunition at a slightly higher rate of fire, 350 rpm.
Permanently settled for around 2000 years, Zürich has a history that goes back to its founding by the Romans, who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum. However, early settlements have been found dating back more than 6400 years ago. During the Middle Ages Zürich gained the independent and privileged status of imperial immediacy and, in 1519, became a primary centre of the Protestant Reformation in Europe under the leadership of Ulrich Zwingli.
In 1814, the former district of Zürich has been established including the municipalities – «Landgemeinden des Bezirks Zürich» (country municipalities) – surrounding the old city of Zurich, the so-called Altstadt. The district of Zürich as it exists today, was created on 1 July 1989, by splitting the former district of Zürich into three parts:
Therefore, since 1 July 1989, the district of Zürich (SFOS number 0112) shares the same area as the city of Zurich (0261) with its subdivisions totalling 390,474 (as of 31 December 2014) inhabitants on an area of 87.78km2 (33.89sqmi).

The 20mm Oerlikon automatic cannon was a mainstay of United States naval air defense during World War 2, and today we will look at a few of the characteristics and questions that apply to this sort of automatic cannon but not to typical small arms. Oerlikon Mk2 1941
The 20mm Oerlikon is a Swiss designed auto cannon used for high angle close range anti-aircraft fire, with an effective rang of 1,000 to 1,200 yards (915 - 1100m). The breech is not locked at the time of discharge and the round is fired a fraction of an inch before it is fully home in the chamber, the neck of the case swelling to form a gas seal. Muzzle velocity 2,725 ft/sec (830m/s) with a rate of fire 465 to 480 rounds per minute. The 20mm rounds are loaded into magazines holding 60 rounds. The last 2 rounds loaded are usually practice rounds so that if there is insufficient time to remove the muzzle cap the non-explosive rounds can blast through the cap. All cartridges are lightly coated with mineral grease when loading to assist the spent cartridge extraction.

Artifact Spotlight: 20MM Oerlikon
The 20mm Oerlikon was a Swiss autocannon that had the unusual distinction of being used by both Axis and Allied sides during WWII. Installed aboard U.S. Navy ships in 1942, they replaced the older M2 Browning machine gun, which lacked range and firepower. It became a workhorse in the naval anti-aircraft role, providing effective defense at shorter ranges, while heavier guns had difficulty tracking targets. In this video, Tom Frezza, Director of Education at the National Museum of the United States Navy, talks about the various positions and teamwork used to operate the weapon.
