Odiham (/ˈoʊdiəm/) is a large historic village and civil parish in the Hart district of Hampshire, England. It is twinned with Sourdeval in the Manche Department of France. The current population is 4,406. The parish has an area of 7,354 acres with 50 acres covered with water. The nearest railway station is at Hook, on the London and South Western Railway. The village had its own Hundred in the nineteenth century, named The Hundred of Odiham. The village is situated slightly south of the M3 motorway and approximately midway between the north Hampshire towns of Fleet and Basingstoke, some 41 miles (66km) southwest of London.
RAF Odiham, home of the Royal Air Force's Chinook heavy lift helicopter fleet, lies to the south of the village.
History
The first written record of Odiham's existence is in the Domesday Book (1086), where it appears with its current spelling, although the spellings Odiam and Wudiham have sometimes been used since.
At the time of the Domesday Survey the parishes contained in the modern hundred of Odiham were included in the two hundreds of Odiham and 'Hefedele'. The former comprised the villages of Lasham and Shalden and half a hide which had been taken from Preston Candover, and the latter included Odiham, Winchfield, Elvetham, Dogmersfield, and Bartley Heath (then "Berchelei")
But for the manors of Bentworth, Greywell, Hartley Wintney, Liss Turney, Rotherwick, Sherfield on Loddon, and Weston Patrick, there are no entries in the Domesday Survey, but they were all probably included in the large manor of Odiham. The manor of Liss Abbas remained until 1831 in Meonstoke Hundred.

RAF Odiham is home to the UK Chinook Force and the Royal Air Force Chinook Display Team. During the coronavirus pandemic, the Hampshire base's helicopters have continued flying, maintaining their flying programme and stepping up to assist in the COVID-19 response. Last month, we went to Odiham to meet the personnel who keep the aircraft flying.

The Castle of King John at Odiham
Today I am with Barry Stevens to explore Odiham Castle, situated close to Odiham, in Hampshire, but actually in North Warnborough. It is one of only three fortresses built by King John during his reign. The site was possibly chosen by King John because he had visited the area in 1204 and it lay halfway between Windsor and Winchester.
The castle is now in a ruinous state, and would have been larger than what we see today. Barry Stevens, a local and historic enthusiast, takes me around the edifice that has been with him since childhood.

Police officer cleared after hitting cow with police vehicle
Surrey Police said an officer who rammed a cow in a police vehicle will return to frontline duties after an investigation found the tactic was “both lawful and necessary to prevent harm to the public and property”.
The force was heavily criticised after footage was posted online of a 10-month-old calf being rammed by a police car after midnight on June 15 following reports of a loose animal in Staines-upon-Thames.
Surrey Police said a comprehensive probe, involving 250 pieces of video footage and 75 witness statements, found there was no cause for further action in either a criminal investigation or internal misconduct proceedings.

Even if you don't live in Odiham or North Warnborough, the actions are still relevant and could save you £500 a year ... Odiham Parish Council launched the 'Greening Odiham and North Warnborough' campaign at a successful launch event in October.
