Michigan quarterback Bobby Hebert passed for one touchdown and ran for another to lead the Panthers to a 37-21 victory over the Oakland Invaders and into the United States Football League's first championship game.
The Panthers, who won the Central Division title with a 12-6 record and have now won 12 of the past 14 games, will play the Philadelphia Stars in Denver's Mile High Stadium next Sunday night for the title.
With 25 seconds to play, after Oakland got its final touchdown, thousands of fans swarmed onto the field and tore down both goalposts. Players and coaches from both teams and the officiating crew headed for the safety of the tunnels to the locker rooms and minutes later USFL officials ruled the game was complete at 14:35.
Hebert, who completed 18 of 27 passes for 295 yards, hit Anthony Carter with a 3-yard scoring pass with 11 seconds remaining in the first half to lift Michigan to a 17-7 halftime advantage.
Hebert also scored on a 1-yard plunge that capped an 80-yard, 11-play drive in the third period.
The Panthers, who had averaged 22,251 during the season, drew a USFL-record 60,237 into the Silverdome — a crowd built in part on reduced ticket prices and free parking.
The Invaders, who won the Pacific Division with a 9-9 regular-season record, grabbed an early 7-0 lead on a 1-yard sneak by quarterback Fred Besana.
Michigan tied it on its next possession when John Williams ran 5 yards for a TD 1:47 into the second period. Oakland linebacker David Shaw intercepted an Hebert swing pass on the third play of the second half and burst 19 yards into the end zone for a TD to cut the Michigan lead to 17-14.
But Hebert's sneak widened the edge to 24-14 with 9:55 remaining in 'the third period. Then Panthers linebacker Ray Bentley forced a fumble by Invader running back Ted Torosian with 2:50 to go in the third quarter. The ball was recovered by defensive end Allen Hughes on the Michigan 17.
Five plays later, Ken Lacy slanted off left tackle on a quick opener for an 18-yard TD and a 31-14 lead. Cleo Miller closed out Michigan's scoring on a 3-yard TD run 1:54 from the final gun and Oakland's final touchdown came on a 5-yard pass from Besana to Marc Lewis.
Place-kicker Novo Bojovic booted a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Panthers. The Michigan defense, led by Bentley, recovered two fumbles and also picked off a pass of Besana passes. Bentley was credited with forcing two of the fumbles and recovering one.
One of Hebert's favorite targets was Carter, who finished with three catches for 78 yards. Carter's biggest catch was a 56-yard play on the series leading to Lacy's touchdown.
The Panthers displayed a flair for the unexpected just as they did in the final-season game against Arizona, a 33-7 rout of the Wranglers. Their play selection consisted of several laterals and reverses which caught Oakland's defense off-balance.

With all the doom and despair surrounding the season, the 1985 Championship Game was an exciting contest that was up for grabs until the very end. A good crowd of 49,263 attended the final USFL contest that started with rain pounding the Meadowlands artificial surface. The rain was a blessing for Baltimore and its ball control offense featuring the running of Kelvin Bryant, while the weather hampered the big play Hebert to Carter passing attack. Hebert and Stars quarterback Chuck Fusina said that the new footballs used for the big game got slick and were difficult to throw. That could be part of the reason why Invader strong safety David Greenwood scored on a 44 yard interception return in the first half. The Stars contained Anthony Carter in the opening half, allowing Carter only a four yard grab.
Carter, though, began to provide spark to Oakland's offense in the second half. He put the Invaders in front 24-21 with a seven yard touchdown catch from Hebert just before the start of the 4th quarter. Baltimore regained the lead with a 49 yard drive capped by a 7 yard touchdown run by Kelvin Bryant with 8 minutes and 15 seconds left to go. Oakland started its final drive, down by four points, from its own five yard line. Oakland made its way to the Baltimore five yard line. Facing third down and two, Oakland Running Back Tom Newton was penalized 15 yards for a personal foul against Stars' cornerback Jonathan Sutton. Oakland Coach Charlie Sumner was upset that such a great game would come down to a scuffle. The penalty forced Oakland back to the Baltimore 20 with only enough time for Hebert to attempt two passes into the end zone, both of which fell incomplete to Gordon Banks. The Stars had the ball and their second consecutive USFL Championship.

Kevin Shea booted a team-record three field goals and Jerry Aldridge sprinted down the sidelines 80 yards for a touchdown to lead the Oakland Invaders to a 16-10 victory over the Denver Gold in a key USFL Pacific Division game.
Shea accounted for Oakland's only three points in the second half when he capped a nine-play, 29-yard drive with a 43-yard field goal.
Running back Arthur Whittington carried five times on the drive, picking up 26 yards to set up the score.
With a little over two minutes to go, Denver drove from its own 23 to the Oakland five, but halfback Harry Sydney fumbled the ball and it was recovered by noseguard Dupre Marshall.
The Invaders then killed the clock to score their eighth victory against seven losses and take a one-game lead over Los Angeles with three games left to play. Denver fell to 6-9.
With Oakland leading 16-3 late in the third quarter, Denver veteran quarterback Craig Penrose completed five passes for 75 yards, including a 16-yard throw to Johnnie Dirden for a touchdown that closed the gap to six points.
Oakland threatened in the first quarter as Fred Besana connected on four consecutive passes to drive the Invaders to the Gold 32. From there Whittington picked up three yards but a sack by Denver's Greg Gerken and a pass in completion forced Shea to attempt a 40-yard field goal that went wide to the left.
In the second quarter, Besana, who was 10-of-15 for 123 yards in the half, moved the Invaders. On 3rd-and-5, Aldridge drifted into the flat and juggled a Besana pass, momentarily confusing the Denver defense, before pulling it in.
Aldridge then tight-roped 5 yards down the sidelines for Oakland's only touchdown. Denver came back on the next series, driving 32 yards in seven plays to set up a 48-yard field goal by Brian Speelman.
Shea later made a 28-yard field goal and linebacker Gary Plummer blocked a Steve Gortz punt to set a 27-yard field goal by Shea that gave the Invaders a 13-3 halftime lead.

1983 Week 6 - Sunday, April 10, 1983
Attendance: 7,984
TV: ABC
[NOTE: If you want to skip all the pregame analysis forward the video to the 6:00 minute mark where kickoff starts.
Also since this game was a blowout the network ABC with a few minutes left switched to the Birmingham vs Chicago game for bonus coverage. Unfortunately the video I received didn't have all of the last minutes of the game]
Ted Torosion rambled for two touchdowns through the wind and rain after an interception and fumble recovery by Oakland as the Invaders snapped the Boston Breakers' four-game winning streak.
Richard Crump put the Breakers, 4-2, ahead 7-0 early in the second quarter with a 1-yard plunge before Torosion got his first touchdown on a 2-yard run with 1:45 left in the period. Kevin Shea's extra point attempt was blocked, leaving Boston ahead 7-6.
Torosion's touchdown climaxed an 80-yard march started by Derrick Martin's interception in the end zone of Johnnie Walton's pass.
Crump's fumble on Boston's first play after the kickoff was recovered by Matt Elisara at the Boston 22-yard line. Five plays later Shea connected on a 28-yard field goal to give Oakland, 3-3, the lead for good, 9-7, as time ran out in the first half.
QB Fred Besana throws his first interception in nearly a month, setting a USFL-record for most consecutive passes without a pick (135 attempts). The miscue proves to be of little consequence as the Invaders roll over the Boston Breakers, 26-7, at Nickerson Field.
